The dream begins with a teacher who believes in you, who tugs and pushes and leads you to the next plateau, sometimes poking you with a sharp stick called "truth"
Ah, the time of year, when final grades are due and students politic for a couple of extra points that would move them from one letter grade to the next and teachers grapple with what that might truly mean for the student. A math teacher friend who lives in a more 'black/white' world points to the calculations, but my world tends to be more gray. Using rubrics and being very transparent about the evaluation system and formative feedback from the beginning appears to do little for those who are more interested in a grade than in learning. The dilemma is compounded when the students are prospective teachers, but in the end, the sharp thorns balance [to the best of my ability] with the beauty in the eye of nature. Naples, FL

Watching over the feeders at the Minnesota River Valley NWR Headquarters (about 1 mile east of the Mall of America).
To take this shot I used a tripod, an ordinary torch which I left a metre away pointing at the knife from the 8:00 position, and a remote control. I selected the camera's delayed remote control mode, holded the lime with my left hand, activated the remote with the right hand, dropped it quickly, and got the knife, which was already into the fruit. A 60W light bulb from the ceiling from about 5:00 position (high) and no flash.
The aim was producing and drawing attention to that shine on the steel blade.

2nd October 2014 at Cecil Sharp House (Trefusis Hall), London NW1.
Country: Finland. Style: World Fusion.
Lineup: Andrew Cronshaw (electric zither/marovantele/kantele/fujara/dizi/willow flute), Sanna Kurki-Suonio (v/kantele), Tigran Aleksanyan (duduk), Ian Blake (bass clarinet/soprano sax).
These musicians have been involved in various collaborations over many years (Tigran Aleksanyan became involved most recently), but the the album released this year is their first collective effort. They mix together their various backgrounds and influences including (in a description from the band’s website) “ancient Karelian songs that became Finland’s Kalevala, the sweeping melodies of Armenia and English folk-song”. The only member of the band I’ve photographed before is Tigran Aleksanyan with Amira & Boban Z in 2011, see: www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157627075090738/.
