I decided I needed to get out of the house for a while, so I went for a drive and found the fairgrounds, now abandoned until next summer. Lots of yummy stuff over there. I'll probably be posting more from today's trip over the next couple of days as I get a chance to look through.

I don't know what this thing is, but it looked kind of sinister. But again, the SOOC version was not right, so I got to sliding and ended up with this. It makes me happy, in a creepy sort of way.

Photographed by an Expedition 26 crew member on the International Space Station, this detailed photograph illustrates flooding in suburbs of the Brisbane, Australia metropolitan region. The Brisbane area experienced catastrophic flooding following unusually heavy rainfall on Jan. 10, 2011. With surficial soils already saturated from previous rainfall events, eastward-draining surface flow caused the Brisbane River to flood—inundating an estimated 20,000 homes in suburbs of the capital city of Queensland. Other cities in Queensland have also experienced damaging floods during previous heavy rainfall events this year. The image highlights several suburbs along the Brisbane River in the southern part of the Brisbane metropolitan area. The light-colored rooftops of residences and other structures contrast sharply with green vegetation and brown, sediment laden floodwaters. Most visible low-lying areas are inundated by floodwater, perhaps the most striking being Rocklea at upper left. The suburb of Yeronga (lower left) also has evident regions of flooding, as does a park and golf course located along a bend in the Brisbane River to the south of St. Lucia (center). Flooding becomes less apparent near the higher elevations of Mt. Coot-Tha at right.

Modeling the new black & gold & "Gold 45 Revolver" Gold'N'Virtue swimsuits with the main equation to Moving Dimensions Theory on the swimsuits: dx4/dt=ic. Yes I have a Ph.D. in physics! :) You can read more about my research and Hero's Odyssey Physics here:

herosodysseyphysics.wordpress.com/ MDT PROOF#2: Einstein (1912 Man. on Rel.) and Minkowski wrote x4=ict. Ergo dx4/dt=ic--the foundational equation of all time and motion which is on all the shirts and swimsuits. Every photon that hits my Nikon D800e's sensor does it by surfing the fourth expanding dimension, which is moving at c relative to the three spatial dimensions, or dx4/dt=ic!

Raging with Homer's Ilaid: "RAGE--Sing, O goddess, the RAGE of Achilles son of Peleus, that brought countless ills upon the Achaeans. Many a brave soul did it send hurrying down to Hades, and many a hero did it yield a prey to dogs and vultures, for so were the counsels of Jove fulfilled."

Sharp-lined Yellow on Redbud

Not as sharp as it should have been, but needed to add this macro shot of this very common, tiny foliose lichen to my album on the JJ Collett Natural Area. Photographed this bright lichen on 6 October, when I went way north of Calgary with friends, to spend the day searching for mosses, liverworts and lichens - and anything else that we were lucky enough to see - including a Moose. This Natural Area consists of 635 acres of Aspen Parkland habitat underlain by ancient sand dunes - though you would never guess it. The various trails are nicely groomed.

I guess I did kick that can to get it into position, otherwise I didn't touch a thing. An all to familiar sight in SF.

This is an early Sharp 8 transistor, AM/SW set. I really like the badge in the middle of the speaker grill borrowing heavily from the Cadillac medalion. As automotive motifs were popular during the 1950's this was most likely a tribute to the V8 engine......of course it also represented the transistor count......

The placement and contour of the volume and tuning knobs create a nice symmetry. Althought the cabinet is a drab, military grey the radio still manages to look "sharp".

The Sharp logo is present on the bottom left, it's just hard to see as it blends into the chrome grille.

Sharp made this radio for the Golden Shield company as well. It can be found as a model 7040 without the 'V8' badge in the middle of the speaker grille. Also found as a Golden Shield model 7000 with a different shortwave band.

Sharp Aquos 32" 1080p LCD. With the lights turned low, watching this is like looking out a window.

A flock of Sharp Tailed Grouse showed up in my back yard this afternoon. While they've been rare in my time in Fairbanks, for some reason this year there are lots.

Last day if the GBBC, I went for a walk Monday morning at Creekside Nature Trail (Menno Haven) in Chambersburg, PA. This Sharp-shinned Hawk was sitting along the trail directly in front of me, can't believe I didn't scare him. I continued to move slowly towards him to get good pics. I think I got at least 20 feet away. - Franklin County - 17 FEB 20

A common Sharp radio from the late 1950's. I say common because this radio can be found under many makes and model numbers, all with cosmetic variations (but basically the same chassis inside).

Below are a couple of examples...........

Click on the Sharp/Sanyo set to see all the variations in this photostream.

I really like the reverse painted dial on this set and the lavender cabinet is seldom seen.

I hiked up the trail to the top of Observatory Hill (Saanich, B.C.) this morning to find a Northern Goshawk that was reported to be in the area. It was very peaceful on the hill the morning as the road is closed Sunday and if you want to go to the top one has to hike the steep but short trail or walk the road. I chose the trail. I spent about 2 hours on the hill. This Sharpie landed right in front of me on a dead snag. We looked at each other, I got the shot, the bird cooperated then flew off in search of morning prey.

02/06/2016, Sharp Island, CHINA.

Hunts mostly by perching inside foliage and waiting for small birds to approach, or by approaching stealthily through dense cover, then bursting forth with incredibly swift flight to capture prey in its talons. Sometimes hunts by flying rapidly among the trees or low over the ground, threading its way around obstacles, taking prey by sudden surprise.

Sharp-shinned hawks are smaller than Cooper's hawks, and this one was tiny - about the size of a skinny pigeon. I saw him flying at great speed and incredible manoueverability over and around this fence, being persued by a crow. He succeeded in evading the crow, and then had a brief rest on the fence, luckily for me.

Fjords

Norway is famous for its fjords, two of which, the Geirangerfjord and the Nærøyfjord, feature on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The Sognefjord, the longest of them all, and the Hardangerfjord, famed for its cherry and apple trees, are among the most visited.

Northern lights

The Northern lights are a common natural phenomenon in Northern Norway, and are most commonly observed above the Arctic Circle between late autumn and early spring.

Midnight sun

The sun does not set in summer over the Arctic Circle, meaning visitors to Northern Norway enjoy 24 hours of daylight this time of year.

Weather

The weather in Norway is much milder than one would expect. Because of the Gulf Stream, temperatures along the coast of Norway are 5-8°C higher than at comparable latitudes elsewhere.

Vikings

The Vikings have a bad reputation as raiders, but they were also traders, explorers and settlers, and the legacy from the Viking Age (AD 800-1050) lives on.

The Sami people

The Sami are the indigenous people of Norway. Known for their colourful clothes and the huge herds of reindeer they look after, the Sami have been living in northern Scandinavia for over 10,000 years, and today they have their own parliament in Karasjok.

Famous Norwegians

These include explorers Roald Amundsen, Fridtjof Nansen and Thor Heyerdahl, composer Edvard Grieg, violin virtuoso Ole Bull, artist Edvard Munch, playwright Henrik Ibsen, novelist Knut Hamsun, and politician Gro Harlem Brundtland, among many others.

The Royal Family

King Harald V, the King of Norway, and Queen Sonja have two children: a son, Crown Prince Haakon, who is married to Crown Princess Mette-Marit, with whom he has two children and a daughter, Princess Martha Louise, who is married to Ari Mikael Behn.

Trolls

Trolls are an important part of Norwegian folklore. They vary in size and appearance, but are invariably ugly and messy creatures, and always mischievous (if not downright nasty). They usually live in caves or deep in the forest, and only emerge from their hiding places after sunset - legend has it that they turn to stone upon contact with the sun. Several places in Western and Northern Norway have been named after them, such as Trollheimen, Trollstigen, Trollhatten and Trollveggen.

In Norway everyone has the right of access ("allemannsretten") in the countryside - including the national parks.

Marked trails

Several national parks have arrangements for outdoor activities with a network of marked paths and trails and overnight accommodation in either staffed lodges or self-service cabins.

In vulnerable areas where it is desirable to limit the impact of visitors, paths and accommodation are minimal. General regulations concerning free access and special regulations concerning preservation in the individual parks may limit what is allowed.

Wild reindeer

National parks are particularly important for species that need relatively large and undisturbed areas to survive, such as wild reindeer, predators and birds of prey. Many of these are at great risk from human intervention and some are even threatened with extinction. Norway has an international responsibility to look after endangered species and their habitats.

Nearly 85 per cent of Norway's national parks are mountains. The mountain landscape varies from endless gently rolling high plateaus to sharp peaks, ravines and glaciers.
