Sindabaaz rows Shikara in Dal Lake of Srinagar. While escaping a crossfire, a sharpnel pierced his left eye. After being rescued and treated by the army, he is now self-sufficient. He owns a Shikara, ferries workers, consumers and visitors from one end of the Dal lake to the other. Somedays, when its misty during early morning, Sindabaaz is found sitting in his Shikara in the midst of Dal lake with silence echoing in the fading ripples of water. Oblivious to the world, he plays his bamboo flute after the morning azaan. Heart wrenchingly beautiful, unconscionably pure and immaculately clean are those notes, even the ripples dance to his rhythm

Armed and dangerous!
Once again, thanks to Mattia for posing for our "let's break stuff mid air" madness (:
Another great shooting session (:
Shoot's toll: twelve glasses died, one crowbar got lightly wounded and a Westcott umbrella got hit by a glass sharpnel getting heavily wounded. :D
Those glasses were EXTREMELY tough! One of them didn't break even after getting hit by a crowbar, smashed on a wall and after falling on the floor! O.o

German soldier dives for cover as shell explodes somewhere in the Western Front, 1917. Shells are payload-carrying projectiles that contain an explosive. Shells were and are usually large-calibre projectiles fired by artillery, combat vehicles, tanks, and warships. Shells usually had the shape of a cylinder topped by an ogive-shaped nose for good aerodynamic performance, in World War I, ogives were typically two circular radius head. But after that war, ogive shapes became more complex and elongated.

Ash and Mitz, in their SERAPHIM incarnations, have managed to draw out the Catwalker Matron into battle...
Lindsay Noonan: the whine of servos and metallic scraping of metal on the gravel and asphalt rooftop announces her presence before she is visible "I can't properly see you, but I have an anomalous power signature up here, so I assume it's you Seven"
Ashur Kentoku doesn’t bother to turn around, but keeps observing the Catwalker with the 360 degree vision provided by the sensors in her helm...she sneers at the admittance she cant be seen and lowers her already low power emissions even further....she waits, ready to move, as she knows she will, soon...
Lindsay Noonan: a faint electronic whine rising in pitch soon followed by several others in quick succession.
Ashur Kentoku watches with interest, monitoring her passive sensors..
Lindsay Noonan: "Believe it or not, I don't want to hurt you, but I can't let you prey on mine Seven....or Ashur...whoever you consider yourself now"
Ashur Kentoku listens to the mostly predictable dialogue, smiling when she hears the words, "Believe it or not, I don't want to hurt you"......she has no such inhibitions....
Lindsay Noonan: "But I will, without hesitation if it comes to that"
Mitz Xi lands quietly.. her eyes now taking in the back of Lindsay... she scans her over gathering data... then looks to Seven awaiting orders... she looks back at Catwalker as she remains in stealth mode
Lindsay Noonan: chuckles "and the partner arrives..." unhooks something from her belt using both hands
Ashur Kentoku moves slowly and fluidly as she draws her SERAPHIM sword, carrying her movement onward into a pouncing strike, blade slashing blurringly fast at the Matrons legs....
Lindsay Noonan: seeing the motion in her tri-vision she responds by dropping what is in her hands and doing a high backflip towards the radio tower
Lindsay Noonan: two flashbangs hit the rooftop, popping their spoons before they hit
Mitz Xi see's the movement of the matron and then seven.. her wrist blades snaps out as she moves as well coming in high from the back to thrust a blade toward her.. her movement is swift as she leaps pouncing as well
Ashur Kentoku's visor protects her from the flashbangs, as does her enclosed helmet.....only the relatively mild concussion in the open space gives her pause to hesitate for a fraction of a second before her nerves sing with accelerated impulses and her movements blur as she closes again, slashing with the long blade at the Matron's legs again, her reach keeping her at a comfortable close quarter distance....
Lindsay Noonan: struck in mid-leap sparks would fly as her claws struck the hardened metal armor a glancing blow. The nearest defensive shield would create a massive electrical discharge that would arc to any nearby metal as Lindsay's once nearly graceful leap spun her at an angle into the antenna array. Chips of armor spark from her grieves as she tries to avoid dismemberment. Several other defensive arcs discharge in rapid succession
Lindsay Noonan OOC : the disc shaped medallions on the armor are contact discharge power cells
Mitz Xi lands as 2.3 second delay fuse on the flash bangs go off with her back to them.. she watches Ashur rush in with her sword.. then whirls in time to see the electrical discharge, she blinks as the lightning dances over the rooftop in a huge display.. then she moves in on Lindsay again coming in high with her blades going for the right arm first.. her tactic is to disarm .. not remove your arm.. disarm her target.
Lindsay Noonan: as quickly as her servos will permit Linds rolls out of Seven's path and tries to get to her feet, shoulder checking the incoming Mitz in the process
Ashur Kentoku crabs weirdly forward, her speed making her look strange as she moves...she presses her attack and feints with the sword, aiming a blow for her head then reversing the strike and turning full circle to slash at her legs, using the move to put extra force behind the blow, the sword singing through the air as the blade moves at near-supersonic speed toward its target....
Mitz Xi hissss as she plows into Lindsay.. arcs of lightning flash off both of them as she feels her arms go numb .. she has however planted on knee on your armored chest as she is sent backwards from the impact with an attempt to use all her strength to knock you off balance.. flipping upwards in the air and crashes into the satelite dish mangling it as the Snake Pit loses all reception now... she pulls herself out of the debris ready to move again.
Lindsay Noonan: taking a hard blow to her leg as a large chunk of armor falls with a 'thud' to the rooftop. Mobility now hampered she is forced to a desperate ploy and tucks her tail up between her legs, shielding it with her forearms as she intones a code word into her suit mike "Overlord". At that command a series of eight claymore mines concealed on the outer surface of her armor trigger in rapid sequence. "Fuck!" she thought as her entire torso became one huge bruise
Ashur Kentoku drops to a knee as and covers her already armoured visor with a left forearm, her right hand holding her sword out straight behind her, as the blast goes off...the shrapnel slams into her armour but does not penetrate and she grunts in pain and annoyance as pain nevertheless shoots from her arms and other body parts from the redirected kinetic energy....she stays like that a moment as the smoke and noise subsides, collecting her senses, like a figure carved from a dark substance, sword poised to strike with supernal speed again....
Mitz Xi standing as she is ready to move again.. maybe hears.. if not she definately see's the eight claymore's going off.. the whole rooftop of the snakepit is fucked.. her eyes widen yelling "INCOMING!" she hammered by sharpnel her armour taking the damage as she yells out in pain..."FUCK" it was to late.. Ashur was to close and she was not as close dropping to a knee she gasps into the mic... "Plan.... B"
Lindsay Noonan: shuddering with the pain Lindsay focused, dropping her arms as two bright white ceramic counterweights fall from her bracers, tied to them with a near invisible glittering thread as she clumsily spun in place allowing the weights to extend the monowire whips as she cleared her immediate area. Surely they were smart and fast enough to avoid this clumsy attack?
Ashur Kentoku keeps her defensive stance as the monofilament wires spin out...she grips the sword with both hands again and parries the wire with the flat of her blade as it spins toward her, careful to keep the counterweights in her field of view and careful to allow no significant pressure to be exerted by the wire on her blade...it was a carbon nanotube material, like her armour, but she didn’t want to take any chances...she makes a flicking motion and momentarily ensnares a wire, then tries to whip the wire back at the Matron, her motions not as smooth or fluid as they might have been earlier, the aches and pains from the claymore explosions still fresh.....
Mitz Xi knows how deadly monowire is, it would slice through anything so avoiding it at all cost is what she plans to do.. ."Watch the Whips 107" she speaks into the mic of the helmet, rolling to the side as one of the whips slices into the roof like a hot knife through butter just missing her.. she uses that as her cue to react... when Ashur ties up the other whip and tries to lash it back at the Matron... she moves now leaping and following the the wire back at the source... her eyes narrowed as she attempts to damage atleast one of the whips with her blade going for the bracer on her right side with a slash
Ashur Kentoku tenses as she sees 613 fly in close, facing the spinning monofilament wire....
Lindsay Noonan: flipping the tongue switch Lindsay triggers the enzyme cutting devices that unravel the deadly monowire's simple structure and cause the counterweights to fly free as she leaps up and forward, the contents of her hands falling to the pavement with a vague moist explosive sound
Ashur Kentoku tilts back and powers up at Linds as she passes overhead, sword slashing at her legs again as she passes...she sets her shoulder after the strike, hopefully powering into the Matron if her sword strike doesn’t....
Lindsay Noonan: stumbling a bit as Seven's shoulder contacted her she allowed herself to tumble off the edge, relying on her gyro and her agility to land so that she might just leap away
Mitz Xi lands as her feet stop in a pool of of fast set epoxy she narrows her eyes on the back of the Matron.. then watches as Ashur moves in for a legs again... she hisses into the mic... "I am not mobile..." she hits a button on her thigh and takes out something.. and presses a button... into the mic..."12 seconds...incoming" she flicks her hand out with great skill and aim as something flies for the backpack of Lindsay... if it hits.. it sticks... if not.. it sails over the edge... a stick bomb.. with a 12 second defuse...
Ashur Kentoku is caught by strands of the epoxy and falls just short of Linds...she raises her sword and slices quickly through the strands, alert for any attacks and ready to move with what little space she has....
Mitz Xi slashes at the rooftop as she frees her feet... then growls into the Mic..."lets move.. target is moving" she pulls her feet free and moves toward Ashur
Ashur Kentoku slashes the last strands free, then pulls free of the rest..she moves cautiosly to the edge of he roof...."Your stick-bomb?" she mews?"

"Shining in the morning light, the gilded splendour of its panelling, big dome and small minarets, this temple is a fairy world palace to the devotees of the Sikh faith. Certainly, the first look brings onto the innocent eye the image of a transcendent fact. The 'loving sight' peering into heaven from the legends of the miraculous cures by the touch of the water in the pool of nectar, in which the shrine stands makes for ecstatic awareness. The vision has been received by millions of pilgrims who have come here for centuries from near and far." (quoted from a devotee)
Of great historical, spiritual, and emotional significance to the Sikhs, this Gurdwara was first conceived by Guru Amar Das, but its actual construction was begun under the supervision of Guru Ram Das his sucessor. The Temple had modest beginnings, a house built of sun dried mud bricks was the first building constructed by Guru Amar Das. Guru Amar Das is said to have found 'a medicinal herb growing at the edge of the pool, which cured a skin ailment of his master Guru Angad the 'second Nanak'. For many years the Amrit Sarovar remained little more than a village tank, until the fourth Guru, Guru Ram Das began to carry out the plans of his mentor Guru Amar Das for a more permanent structure built of kiln fired brick.
"The Golden Temple"
Around the world, to non-Sikhs the Harimander Sahib is, perhaps, better known by its English 'sobriquet' - a name given to the Temple because of the lavish gold plating that adorns the walls of its two upper floors, which include its dome, the airy Shish Mahal, where three Gurus spent many hours, and its minarettes. Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the great Sikh Maharaja of the only Sikh state to never be ruled by the British during his lifetime was, besides one of the greatest generals of military history, one of the few rulers of India to serve his Kingdom and its subjects of, various religions, with an eye to the equality of all. He was also a great patron of the arts. During his lifetime he had strived to bring all Sikhs under the rule of one great Khalsa Kingdom. When he gained control of Amritsar he used much of the great excess wealth the Punjab produced to rebuild many Gurdwaras associated with the days of the Gurus as well as having many more constructed.
He was, along with his grandson, Nau Nihal Singh, very generous in his patronage of the Gurdwara at Tarn Taran, but the Harmandir Sahib held that same special place in his heart, that it holds for all Sikhs. Here he contributed tons of gold to cover the exterior walls of the Gurdwara's two upper floor's ornately fashioned metal panels. The beautiful dome, shaped like an inverted lotus, which sits above the curved bangaldar roof of its Shish Mahal, alone was covered in 220 lbs. of the precious metal.
(The SGPC in March 2005 has prohibited Sikhs from referring to the Sri Harmandir Sahib as the Golden Temple.)
The Tank that lends the City its Name
The city in which the temple is located is now known by the name of its Holy tank the Amritsar (pool of nectar). Amritsar is located in East Punjab at the North West border of India. It is the most sacred and the most visited of the many historic Sikh shrines spread across India, Pakistan and the world.
In 2002, the Temples gold plating was replaced with new gold plates. In 1604, the newly compiled Adi Granth was housed here for the first time.

Freedom and Equality strikes fear
When one wishes to attack or destroy an enemy, the easyest way was for the leader of one one side to challenge the leader of the other side, usually the fiercest warrior of each side, to personal combat. Such was the story of David and Goliath, recorded in the Bible. The army of the losing side was honor bound to leave the battle field. Such tactics were often used by the Sikh Gurus to win a battle with those who had decided to punish or destroy Sikhi. One of the first attacks on the Harmandar Sahib was thwarted in this way.
Being men of peace who many times later rode to the defense or aid of those who had earlier attacked them, the Sikhs way of life attracted increasing number of converts to the young religion in its early years. Of course these new Sikhs came from the long established religions of Punjab, mainly the Hindu and Muslim religions which themselves had long been engaged in a war for the minds of the people of Panjab and India. Feeling threatened the priests and rulers of each of these religions took actions to stem the tide of their 'apostates'.
The main Hall at the Golden TempleThe Sikhs Gurus and their devotees (Sikhs) spoke of, espoused and lived in freedom and equality, not just for their men, but even for their women. In an area of the world where men and especially men of religion had (still often do, i.e. the Taliban) enjoy immense priviledges: education, better food, political control and power-even slaves, the attraction of Sikhi threatened their continued easy lives. The Sikhs were definitely 'rocking the boat'.
Like the Fabled Phoenix
So after they were unable to defeat the Sikhs and their Gurus in battle, they turned their attentions to the 'Religious Head of the Sikhs', the Akal Takhat (which housed the Sikh's 11th Guru the SGGS) and Sikhisms' most holy Temple - the Harmandar Sahib.
As Aurangzeb had once thought that he could destroy Hinduism in India by converting all of the respected Kashmiri Pandits, the Jihadists, whether the later Mughals or the Persians and Afganis who folloowed them thought that if they could only destroy or defile the Harmandar Sahib, they could break the back of the Sikhs.
Over the years the Temple has suffered many attacks, been pulled down and even had its Sarovar filled in or defiled with the carcasses of slaughtered animals, but like the fabled temples of China and Japan which are torn down and rebuilt to insure their continuance (they remain as new in appearance as the day they were first built). The attackers found that the backs of the Sikhs as well as the back of the religion proved impossible to break, for the Temple was always rebuilt, each time growing stronger and more beautiful than before. Many of the attackers found that the Sikhs were capable of seeing that the perpatrators of such deeds received earthly punishment, despite their seeming safety among their guards - i.e Massa Rangarh. The names of Bhai Mani Singh, Bhai Deep Singh, Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, Bhai Sukha Singh and Bhai Mehtab Singh will always be remembered for their actions in defense of the Temple.
The Golden TempleIn one of the last centuries most trajic events; an attack, said to be aimed mainly at the Akal Takhat, (the seat of the Governing body of the Sikhs which housed many weapons of the Gurus; swords, flagstaffs, priceless and unreplaceable hand scribed documents; as well as serving as the home of the SGGS at night) by the Indian army (June of 1984) caused severe damage to the Akal Takhat and the whole complex. A bullets or a piece of sharpnel hit and killed one Sewadar inside the temple itself). Even the SGGS being read by a Granthi was pierced by a bullet. The beautifull marble slabs that cover the Parikarma (the promenade that surrounds the Sarovar) were cut deeply, some even broken as the Indian army called in heavy tanks whose tracks cut deeply into the marble. Besides being damaged by the tanks, the blood of the attackers, the occupiers and unknown numbers of innocent pilgrims (men, women and children) flowed from the bodies that covered the walkway, staining the marble and filling the motar between each slab. Repacing the marble was a monumental task.
Plan of the Complex
Main article: Structure of Harmandar Sahib
The Temple appears to rise from the beautiful blue waters of its surrounding Sarovar. Its upper walls and Lotus Dome stretch toward the sky reflecting the rays of the Golden Sun above. The Sarovar is surrounded by a Parikarma or Causeway, which is used by the devotees to walk in a clockwise circle around the Sarovar stopping at the many spots associated with Sikh history and the Gurdwaras defenders, before crossing the causeway into the the Harmandar Sahib itself, the throne of the holy Sri Guru Granth Sahib during the day; the central hub of all Sikh religious activity.
A Plan of the Harmandar Sahib Complex, click to enlargeDuring the daylight hours continuous Kirtan and Gurbani recital takes place. The Temple has 4 doors which face the four cardinal directions East, West, North and South. As Guru Arjan was aware that the other religions of the world use a specific direction for the layout of their houses od worship he had a door placed so that anyone could enter the Temple from the direction his religion dictated. A leading Sufi Sant of the Moslem religion Hazrat Mian Mir, was asked to lay the cornerstone of the Gurdwara's foundation. As it was on the first day the Gurwara was opened, all visitors to the Temple, no matter their religion, caste, nationality, or social status are welcomed to this temple.
The Guru Granth and Harmandir Sahib
Guru Granth Sahib on the first floor of Harimandir SahibThe Guru Granth Sahib, the 11th Guru of the Sikhs, lies literally at the heart of worship in the Harmandir Sahib complex. serving as the focus of attention and devotion in the Harmandar's sanctum. Other copies of the Guru Granth Sahib are continosly recited on the first floor of the building and in the Shish Mahal Pavillion on the Gurdwara's roof. The SGGS is also recited continuously at the other shrines in the complex: Baba Deep Singh, Lachi Ber, Thara Sahib, Shahidganj and the Akal Takhat. In addition, the compositions of the Gurus and Bhagats contained in the SGGS comprise most of the Kirtan sung in the Harimandir Sahib.
The SGGS is also central to Sikh worship in the Harimandir Sahib in another sense. The pattern of worship in the Harimandir Sahib reflects both the historical memory of the presence of the fourth, fifth and sixth Gurus in the city of Amritsar and the doctrine of the SGGS as the embodiment of the human Gurus. According to the Sikh tradition, the Gurus resided at the modern site of the Gurdawara Guru Ka Mahal in the heart of the old city and came daily to the Harmandir Sahib, often passing their time in the Shish Mahal (the mirrored room atop the Temple). After the addition of the Akal Takhat, costructed by Guru Hargobind, the Guru also spent time there on a daily basis.
Harimandir Sahib c.1840 Kapany CollectionDaily Timetable
The timetable followed inside the Harmandir Sahib recreates the traditional understanding of the period of Sikh history when the Gurus resided in Amritsar. The morning Kirtan begins in the sanctum of the Harimandir Sahib in the early morning with the singing of the lengthy composition Asa di Var, which is interrupted by the arrival of a procession from the Akal Takhat of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib being carried on a palanquin on the shoulders of Sevadars (volunteers).
The Sangat (congregation), those who have begun their day early enough to be among those to be first to fill the Temple, rises as the holy Granth is placed on the Singhasan (throne) in the centre of the sanctum and attendants then read verses from the Granth in praise of the Sikh Gurus, written by the Gurus' court poets, the Bhatts. The holy Granth is then ceremoniously opened and a Hukam (command) is taken by opening the text at random and reading the first composition on the open page.
This process is intended to recreate the daily routine followed during the time of the Gurus: the arrival of the Guru Granth at the Harmandar Sahib from the Akal Takhat, the praises sung in honour of the Gurus by court poets and others, and his first discourse of the day in the shrine. The Guru Granth Sahib then remains on its throne in the sanctum until the early evening, when it is again taken in procession on a palanquin to the Akal Takhat for its traditional night-time rest.
The contours of the day as enacted in the sanctum of the Harimandir Sahib therefore reflect and recreate, on a daily basis, the nexus between the Gurus and Amritsar, embodying in praxis the historical memory of the presence of three of the human Gurus in Amritsar. For modern Sikhs, the daily routine of the Harimandir Sahib also literally reflects the Sikh doctrine of the SGGS as the physical embodiment of the ten Human Gurus.
History
The Sikh Gurus
Landscape before the arrival of Guru AmardasThe foundation stone of the historic building was laid by a non-Sikh. The Guru gave the task of initiating the building to a Muslim Saint Hazrat Mian Mir ji of Lahore in December 1588. Can you imagine Julius II the Pope who asked Michaelangelo to redesign the Vatican asking him to find a Jewish Rabi to lay its cornerstone? The Guru had been asked by the previous Guru to find the Holiest man in India to lay the stone for the Gurdwara. Guru Arjan in choosing his friend Hazrat Mian Mir ji to lay the stone showed the world the true message of religion, promoting Interfaith dialogue and interaction.
During the 1400 hundreds, the site had a small lake, which was surrounded by a wooded area. Travellers and holy people used the site for meditation and rest. These visitors recognised it for its special sense of tranquillity and its pure and sweet water. Historical records show that Gautama Buddha stayed for some time at this ancient lake even recommending it as a place for Sadhus and Rishis to meditate.
Alhough there is no 'paper trail' to prove the claim, it is thought that the land was gifted to the Guru Ram Das's daughter as a present for her wedding to Guru Arjan.
The lake was enlarged and a small community was established during the leadership of the fourth Sikh Guru (Guru Ram Das, 1574-1581). It was during the leadership of the fifth Guru (Guru Arjan, 1581-1606), that the Golden Temple was built. It was completed in 1601.
Changes made between 1573-1606The development of the Harmandar Sahib and Amritsar have gone hand in hand; the city was formerly known as Ramdaspur, and on construction of Harimandir Sahib became known as Amritsar. Guru Ram Das ji encouraged traders and businessmen to settle in the city with the development of the Guru Ka Bazaar and the market at Chowk Passian. During the times of the fifth and sixth Gurus, plans were made and implemented to expand the city; wells and baolis were constructed to supply water to the ever growing groups of pilgrims. The garden, Guru Ka Bagh was laid out to the south-east of the Harmandir. The area surrounding the temple was developed into markets, gardens, homes and residential palaces. Guru Arjan Dev ji also lived in one of these newly constructed houses.
Guru Arjan Dev ji's martyrdom in 1606 gave a new direction to the faith and to the development of the city. Guru Hargobind added the political-temporal aspect to the spiritual aspect of Sikhism. This led to the construction of the Akal Takhat within the precinct space, a fortress named Lohgarh (the castle of steel) outside it, and a wall around the city to protect it from those who began to fear, envy and even attack the Sikhs.
Guru Hargobind also constructed the Chaurasi Atari adjoining the Guru Ka Bazaar and a new garden Akalian da Bagh adjacent to the Guru Ka Bagh in 1609.
The Struggle Period
Darbar Sahib as seen from Dukh BhanjanThe seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth Gurus did not make any additions to the Harimandir or the city. During this period the masands looked after the Harimandir and are known to have mismanaged the temple. At this time the Sikhs were engaged in several battles against corrupt practices and Mughal rulers. All efforts were directed towards protecting the Harimandir from desecration.
After the passing of Guru Gobind Singh ji in 1708, the Sikhs passed through a very critical phase where they were 'legally hunted and killed, with prices having been fixed on their heads. It was during this period that the Harimandir Sahib was damaged and/or demolished five times. Each time the Sikhs took the earliest opportunity to rebuild it. It was in 1762 that Ahmad Shah blew up the building with gunpowder, but the Sikhs rallied to return to Amritsar and celebrated the festival of Diwali a few months later.
In January 1764, Jassa Singh Ahluwalia took over Sirhind and then he and other Sikh chiefs gave a call for the reconstruction of the shrine. Money raised was deposited with Des Raj of Sursingh village and he was also entrusted with the supervision of the work. The edifice then raised on an earlier original design has since remained the same with minor alterations and embellishments.
The Misl Period (1707-1801)
Development during the Misl and Maharaja Ranjit Singh PeriodsDuring the Misl period, when the Mughal Empire declined and the power of Sikh chiefs rose, many Bungas were built, not only to defend the Harimandir but to fortify the city. These were military establishments, but they also served as educational institutions and rest houses for pilgrims. New roads, forts and Bazaars were also constructed during this period.
Maharaja Ranjit Singh (1801-39)
The inscription above the outer walls entrance to the Harimandir Sahib reads, after the Mool Mantar: "The Great Guru in His wisdom looked upon Maharaja Ranjit Singh as his chief servitor and Sikh, and in his benevolence, bestowed on him the privilege of serving the Temple."The Parikarma around the Sarovar was made in 1784, Later after 1801, when Maharaja Ranjit Singh had defeated the Misl chiefs and established his headquarters in Lahore, the shrine was embellished and ornamented with gold. This process commenced in 1802 and the work included the application of inlaid marble panels onto the outer face of the building, richly embossed gilded metal sheets and a range of fresco techniques. Maharaja Ranjit Singh also constructed the Gobindgarh fort in 1805-09 along with his own summer palace and a series of gardens and canals.
The British Period (1849-1947)
The British took over the management of the Harimandir on the annexation of the Punjab (1849-1947). During their time they built several administrative buildings, railways, churches and roads within Amritsar. The clock tower was built in 1862 and with this the direction of the main entrance to the precinct of Harimandir Sahib was changed from the west to the north.
Bullet hole at the window-corner caused probably during the battle of Auja in the Arab-Israeli war in 1948. I had put one of the sharpnels which are lying around next to it.
At around 1900, the Ottomans started to build a police post to serve as a administrative centre in the former settlement Nitzana, now called Hafir el Auja. Parts of the ancient ruins were used to construct buildings for the Ottoman settlement. Within the fort, the Ottomans started approx. in 1906 to construct a serail/palace but due to lack of material and funds only achieved to build a bit more than the foundation.
In preparation of the planned German-Ottoman advance against the Suez Canal, wells and water cisterns were build between Be’er Sheva and El Arish as well as simple roads. Further, it was given order to build a hospital on the foundation of the palace located on Tel Nitzana in End of 1914.
By July 1916, the German-Ottoman hospital was not yet finished but already operating. Earlier, in February or March 1916, 4 Borromean sisters (Christian Sisters of Mercy of St Borromeo) were employed in the hospital as nurses. The hospital was closed with the withdrawal of the Ottoman forces in March 1917 to Be’er Sheva.
In summer 1917, the area became part of the British mandate and the former Ottoman garrison Hafir el Auja was used as prison camp until 1948. According to the United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine, the area was planned to become part of the Arab state and in 1948 the Egyptian Army used the area and the Ottoman buildings as a military base.
Despite this plan, Auja was captured in December 1948 by the Israeli 89th Mechanized Commando Battalion in the so called Battle of Auja al-Hafir during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. During the fighting Israeli airplanes bombed the Egypt military base in Auja. Remnants were blown-up later to avoid Egyptians troops find something to return to. Damages of the battle can still be seen in the ruins, e.g. on the old German-Ottoman hospital.
Taken at my TV screen. 14 August 2006.
From a film originally shot in Iraq in 2003, by Mr Toshikuni Doi, a Japanese journalist.
This eight-year-old boy's name is Mustafa (or Moustafa), and he lives in Baghdad. In 2003, just days before the Iraq war ended, he was hit with a sharpnel in his left leg. At the time the journalist met him, he was on a hospital bed. The medicine there was not enough, which made it worse for the boy's leg. Doctors feared they would have to cut it off to save his life, and Mr Doi decided to begin some fund-raising activities in Japan. His website has some reports (in Japanese only).
On 14 August 2006, on the eve of the 61st VJ day, the NHK (Japan's BBC) aired a special program on "children and war". The program started with two pretty-boy actors' recent efforts on a war play, followed by this Mustafa report.
In the report, Mustafa was drawing some pictures. Whereas other children's pictures were about fighting, bombs, explosions and destruction, his were 1) a beautiful sunrise 2) a playground, a tree and the river. That's how his wounded boy sees, or wants to see, the world around him.

# He is not my child, he's not a kid around me, but I posted this to Mundo Uno group because I really wish him and all other children in war-torn areas not to see any more drop of blood or bomb.

No match on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website, so the assumption is that he survived the war.
His Service Records do not appear to have survived the incendiary attack during the Blitz on the Warehouse where all the Army service records were stored.
No match on Picture Norfolk, the County image Archive.
12th September 1895 – birth..........................
Sourced from his International Red Cross Papers.
The birth of a Herbert Arthur Stearne was registered with the Civil Authorities in the District of Thetford, Norfolk in the October to December quarter, (Q4), of 1895.
The most likely marriage of his parents was that of a Herbert Fisher Stearne to an Ellen Jane Huggins, which was recorded in the Greenwich District of London in the July to September quarter, (Q3), of 1890.
1901 Census of England and Wales
The most likely match on this census was a 5 year old Herbert A Stearne, born Thetford, who was recorded living at 12. Melford Bridge Road, Thetford. Head of the household was his married mother Ellen J., (aged 28, born Thetford). As well as Herbert her other children living with her are:-
Henry A…………..aged 9……born Thetford
Edith M……………aged 7…..born Thetford
Kate A…………….aged 3……born Thetford
Hilda…………..aged 7 months..born Thetford
There is no obvious match for his father , (using the details from the 1911 census).
1911 Census of England and Wales
The Stearne family were still living at 12, Melford Bridge Road. Parents Herbert, (aged 45, a Maltster, born Thetford) and Ellen, (39), have been married 20 years and have had 8 children, of which 7 were then still alive. All 7 were still living at home.
Henry……aged 19….Painter at an Engineering Works
Edith…….aged 17
Herbert….aged 15….Printer at Printing Works
Kate……..aged 13
Hilda……aged 7……born Thetford
William…aged 5……born Thetford
Lilian……aged 2……born Thetford
Until September 1911 the quarterly index published by the General Registrars Office did not show information about the mothers maiden name. A check of the General Registrars Office Index of Birth for England and Wales 1911 – 1983 shows no likely additional children of Herbert and Ellen.
It may be a co-incidence but a Herbert Stearne, (and his brother Henry) turned out for the Thetford Football team in the 1913/14 season.

The Silver War Badge Roll shows that Arthur originally enlisted on the 23rd November 1911. I suspect this was as a Territorial rather than a Regular Army man. He would also then have only been 16. Of course he could have been a Regular and the appearance for the football team could have been a one-off while he was home on leave.
1914-1915 – Electoral Register……………………..
The 1914 Norfolk Register of Electors records that a Herbert Stearne was entitled to vote in County Council and Parish elections only, and was entitled to vote on the grounds of being a householder of a dwelling house at Bury Road, Thetford. This is shown as being successive – i.e. he had lived at another address which helped him satisfy the qualifying period, and the previous address was Melford Bridge Road. Its slightly puzzling that he was not entitled to parliamentary vote, but then I couldn’t initially find him on the earlier editions of the Register.
www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-68KQ-CK4?i=445&a...
On the 1915 edition he still doesn’t qualify for a Parliamentary vote, along he continues to live at Bury Road.
www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-DRPS-84R?i=446&a...
(This would be Herbert the father I suspect).
27th June 1917 – the day of Arthurs' capture……………..
On the night of June 25-26 the 5th. Battalion Yorkshire Regiment raided and captured a portion of a German trench opposite Fontaine Wood, which the next night was taken over by C. Company (Captain, now Major Morrell). The enemy determined to recover this, and at 7 am. on June 27th. commenced a very heavy shelling of the whole forward area, particularly concentrating on C. Company's position. This bombardment continued with more or less intinsity throughout the day, culminating with a great barrage of fire at about4.30 pm. After this the Germans attacked viciously, and eventually overcame our men, only 15 of whom were left, all the remainder killed or wounded. D. Company (Captain Wilson-Barkworth, M.C.) under similar circumstances, and with about 70 per cent casualties, though pressed back somewhat, succeeded in holding its hastily constructed position. The casualties this day were four officers and about 110 other ranks

After the war was over……………………
Herbert returned at some point, and the Silver War Badge roll records that he was discharged, aged 24, on the 16th April 1919. Badge number B315060 was issued on the 25th October 1919.
It may be a co-incidence but the marriage of a Herbert A Stearne to a Florence M. Taylor was recorded in the Thetford District in the October to December quarter, (Q4), of 1921.
Possible children of the couple, all registered with surname Stearne, mothers maiden name Taylor, in the Thetford District, are:-
Esme P……….Q2 1923
Kenneth H……Q2 1926
The most likely death was that of an Arthur H. Stearne, aged 57, which was recorded in the Luton District of Bedfordshire in the January to March quarter, (Q1), of 1953. There is no obvious probate for that man.
Mildly photoshopped to minimise impact of damage present on the original source.

Invasion Beach, once known as Yellow Beach 2 during the battle of Saipan. Look closely at the sand, it tells a lot of history. Here you can see a piece of 1930's Japanese pottery, World War II shrapnel and melted metals, and pieces of broken bottles that have been polished smooth from 65 years of ocean waves.

Facade. Quezon Province.
It was first built in 1585 and repaired in 1590 using nipa and palm by Franciscan Friars. In 1600, an edifice made of bricks was erected but this was destroyed by an earthquake in 1743. The church was later rebuilt and made bigger in 1856 by the addition of a dome (cupola) and transept. Despite many renovations, the church has remained largely intact over the years. During the 2nd World War, bomb sharpnel damaged an adjacent convent, which was being used as a Japanese garrision.
This is one of the National Cultural Treasures of the Philippines. It features seven chapels done in the neo-classical style.

This armor-reinforced Chevrolet truck kept Time Photographers and other correspondents safe during the the violent conflict of the 1990s in the former Yugoslavia. Repeatedly struck by bullets and sharpnel, the vehicle was dubbed the "Metal Magnet". The sign on the left is the road sign from Bosnia that once stood along the main road linking Sarajevo and the city's airport. The road -- Vojvode Putnika -- was known as "Sniper Alley" during the 1992-95 conflict. As the scores of holes from small-arms and tank-cannon fire attest, the area was under constant fire from Serbian forces and was one of the most dangerous parts of the city. The sign directs drivers to cities in the former Yugoslavia. Newseum; Washington D.C. [DSC_1867]

A side view of the sharpnel type meteorite from Siberia. It's my new treasure!
It's from the largest observed fall in history (that we know of) which occurred at 10:38am on 12 Feb 1947. And estimated 70 ton or more Bolides type flew in at over 30,000 mph and bagan exploding 3-1/2 miles up and continued until the impact blew shrapnel out of the craters formed. Explosions were heard/felt and windows broken up to 100 miles away from the impact site.
7mm round again. Extermely messy and moderatley dangerous shot. Flying aluminum sharpnel could be a risk for yourself and equipment if you don't take the necessary precautions.

In the Insecticon Hive, Bombshell receives a communication from their somewhat unimaginatively named Insecticon cohort, Insecticon. Sharpnel listens in with glee.
Bombshell: 'Yes?'
Insecticon: 'Bombshell, Shrapnel's findings were correct! I have located the source of alien technology! It's from Gallifrey!'
Shrapnel's visored optic opens wide with excitement at the report!
Shrapnel: 'It's the Time Lord *time lord*! It is the Doctor *doctor*!'
Bombshell waves away Shrapnel's enthusiasm and focuses on the report.
Bombshell: 'Is there sight of the Doctor?'
Insecticon: 'Negative. The technology is in the form of a simple key in the possession of the fleshling named Gaga.'
From beneath Bombshell's faceplate he sneers.
Bombshell: 'Bah, "Gaga"! What a stupid name. Insecticon, maintain surveillance! Stay out of sight!'
Insecticon: 'As you command, Bombshell.'
With that, Insecticon fades into the bush while Bombshell's colleague, Kickback, approaches the computer terminal and accesses an email program.
Kickback: 'I'm preparing the report now.'
