There is a lot of small birds, rabbits, and other small mammals living along the Courtenay River estuary - a perfect haunt for several kinds of raptors. Looking high up and through branches revealed this hawk. The consensus of local bird watchers was for Sharp-shinned so we're going with that.

Out today shooting for this month’s theme “sharp and spiky” with my local photography club, this image was created during that photo walk. It will probably not make the final selection, but as today’s image of the day, it captures the idea well — highlighting the sharp forms, textures, and character of barbed wire in a simple close-up study.
All I need now at this stage of my project is sharp vision indeed! And a lot concentration...
But I keep on sharing my thoughts through images on flickr, to release the tension of work...

Last day if the GBBC, I went for a walk Monday morning at Creekside Nature Trail (Menno Haven) in Chambersburg, PA. This Sharp-shinned Hawk was sitting along the trail directly in front of me, can't believe I didn't scare him. I continued to move slowly towards him to get good pics. Squealing round the sharp curves is 45113, unofficially named 'Athene', with the Forders Sidings - Cricklewood empty bins.
The Peak was into its last year of service, being withdrawn on 2nd August 1988.

I seem to remember that I was looking towards the sun when I took this photo, plus it was heavily overcast. I wanted to show the beautiful pattern of this Grouse's feathers, so I had to brighten the photo a lot, which unfortunately resulted in being able to see the poor quality even more : ) There were two Grouse standing on this fence in one of the farmyards that we called in at.

The LAST Nanton Count was originally supposed to have taken place on 28 December 2013, but the weather forecast warned of a Flash Freeze, and so it was postponed till 5 January 2014. The weather was bright and sunny for us that day. However, photos taken on that day did not show how brutally cold it was! On the hour-long drive south of Calgary, we hit -34C (-29.2F)!!!!! It did eventually warm up a few degrees and thankfully, there was no or very little wind, which makes all the difference. The only walking we had to do was when we called in at various farms and homesteads. One backroad in particular had too much snow on it, so we had to leave that one out. Also, there was just too much snow in many of the farmyards, so we weren't able to check out all the trees and bushes as thoroughly as we would like to have done. I absolutely love the scenery on this Count, so I was able to get a few shots to show some typical snowy landscapes.
THIS year's Nanton Count was so different, with snow seen only in places, making the roads so much easier to drive, and temperatures that were much milder. As usual, I didn't get many birds photos, but I was happy to get a few shots of Sharp-tailed Grouse.
After the Count, we returned to the meeting place at the home of Leah and Bill, where they had prepared a delicious supper that they so generously provide each year for us (as well as a breakfast snack). You couldn't wish for a nicer, more welcoming family (includes their son, Mike, who puts in a lot of effort organizing this annual Count each year, as well as taking part in the Count itself).
I'm posting Andrew Hart's E-bird Summary of our small (just four of us in one car) group's day (leader Tony Timmons). Won't be of interest to most of you, but it helps me remember what we see from year to year!

This pair of Sharpes coaches have been in Northern France this week and are seen at Parc Bagatelle on 27th June. 2018. Volvo B12B Van Hool Alizee T9 YIB 827 was new to Maynes of Buckie as MM05 GSM whilst Van Hool Altano TDX21 3 TYX came from Luxury Transport, Hayes, in 2017 where it was registered YH63 CXZ.
