On Thursday, July 31, the City of Greenville hosted HurriUp, a comprehensive state-wide hurricane preparedness workshop for local government GIS staff that provided opportunities for collaboration and mutual support between government organizations as well as training and access to resources that support disaster response.
Nearly 100 attendees traveled from across the state (and many more signed in to the live stream) to hear presentations from North Carolina local government GIS staff on their experiences responding to hurricanes and other weather-related events, receive resources to implement GIS best practices in planning, preparing, and responding to the different phases of events, and learn from state and federal agencies and private partners on the shared data, resources, and applications available to assist local governments with GIS-based disaster planning and response.
HurriUp is organized by the Geographic Information Coordinating Council’s Local Government Committee. Since 2019, this group has come together to share resources, data sharing best practices, and hard-won personal experiences responding to hurricane events. GIS plays a critical role in coordinating disaster response and getting first responders and recovery teams the information they need. But preparedness begins long before an event takes place; HurriUp aims to give local governments a framework for supporting emergency management operations with GIS through the full lifecycle of a disaster event.

When eating with my family you are allowed to have your choice of food, whether it is an appetizer, an entree, or a dessert for as long as you can take one or two good bites, then everything is passed. I love it. consternating at times, but mostly wonderful.
My orange-crowned warbler and female downy woodpecker were playing nice for the moment. Normally the woodpecker tries to drive everyone else away from the suet. Each of them have a little suet on the tip of their beak.

An Edible Solar Currency
The Solar Share project challenges prevailing economic models with insights from sunlight-harvesting organisms that are crucial to the metabolism of life on Earth. Staged as a one-square-meter microalgae bioreactor, the artwork foregrounds human energy dependence on photosynthesis and proposes harvested edible microalgae as a radical economic unit: The Solar Share. This unit is the biomass produced on one square meter of the Earth’s surface on the day of measure. This edible algae unit is a photosynthetic proof of work that can be consumed, exchanged, or stored as a currency. The Solar Share is an invitation to experience firsthand a transformative economic model that reintegrates human metabolism and energy needs with the actual new energy entering the Earth’s system as photosynthesis. The Solar Share provocatively recenters Earth’s metabolism in economics, redefining sustainability within planetary limits.
