On a visit to London a while back during blue hour I stumbled across this amazing view with its very own framing of the Shard.

While I stood and waited for good light, I could not get rid of the thought of how these pines grow on bare rocks, what they eat, what they cling to with their roots. In the meantime, a very beautiful sunset happened, a bright, orange light flooded these ancient stones and we ran like crazy, trying to photograph them from different points. Here's what came out of it.

After temperatures went up and some rain, the ice started to break up. Waves pushed the ice further in toward the beach creating a build up of ice shards in piles near the shoreline.

The Shard is a 72-storey skyscraper in Southwark, London, designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano. Standing 309.6 metres (1,016 feet) high, the Shard is the tallest building in the United Kingdom, and the seventh-tallest building in Europe.

Completed in 2012, The Shard was the tallest building in the European Union until the UK’s departure in 2020. At 309.6 meters tall it is still the tallest building in UK. The architectural design resembles a shard of glass, hence its name.

On the second day in London I stood on Tower Bridge and tried to align the tip of The Shard and the Sun. Well, I was not so lucky, but this one is rather close.

Back home, when looking through my results I liked the strong dynamic power of the river in combination with the rather static power of The Shard.

The Shard, also referred to as the Shard of Glass, Shard London Bridge and formerly London Bridge Tower, is a 95-storey skyscraper in Southwark, London, that forms part of the London Bridge Quarter development. Standing 309.7 metres (1,016 ft) high, the Shard is the tallest building in the United Kingdom, the fourth-tallest building in Europe and the 111th-tallest building in the world. It is also the second-tallest free-standing structure in the United Kingdom, after the concrete tower at the Emley Moor transmitting station.

I was on a train going from London Bridge to Blackfriars the other day and it was around 8am with some lovely light available. I suddenly noticed that there was a nice bit of cloud shrouding the Shard about half way up the building. The problem was getting off a shot from a moving train as every time I put the camera to my eye there would be another building obscuring the view. It was maddening! I finally got a couple of shots off, one of which was this one, with the shard partially hidden by the building you see at left. When I got it home I decided to go a little more graphic with the image in post processing. I put a texture on top of the original image and converted to monochrome to come up with this.

Looking at the top of the Shard, to the tip of its 310m height, and 72 storeys. It really dominates the London skyline.
