I found this scene on a day trip in rural New Brunswick. The juxtaposition of the pulley, building and silo stood out as I passed by and my brain zapped saying " Turn Back " and see what you can do with that. I'll have to do some research and find out what the equipment produces. The lighting was perfect in the late afternoon showing some contrast highlighting the sides of the building.

On a rainy evening, the "Popradské Pleso" lake in the Tatras mountains, Slovakia.
This shot was taken with a mobile phone, as my camera broke down at the very beginning of this trip. I locked the ISO setting of the phone to 100 ISO to try to get as much as possible out of the camera phone, and then resorted to post-processing to try to get a quality image.
For post-processing, I used darktable. I used non-local means denoising, and adjusted the tone curves to have a strong highlight in the center of the image. I use both the equalizer filter (in clarity mode) and the local contrast filter, with masks selecting the center of the image, to increase the contrast gradually toward the center. My goal was to make more visible the different layers of mountains.
Then, I worked a lot on the lower part of the image, the lake, to enhance the highlights in the reflection. For this, I started with a strong modification of the tone curves. However, this created a lot of noise as the sensor of the phone is not too good in the shadows. To fight this noise, applied a set of filters only on the lower part of the image: I used a stronger non-local means that I combined with a wavelet-based denoising (using the "profiled" denoising filter of darktables) as these have different types of artifacts. To cancel out the artifacts, I added to these a low-pass filter that smooths out the image. On top of this, I added artificial grain, to restore the grain of the image destroyed while smoothing.
Finally, I worked a bit on the clouds. I wanted to crop the top of the image, in order to focus more on the horizon line, but I was interested in the shapes of the cloud. So I used a liquify filter to warp these clouds down. Last, in a minor and classic trick, I created a vignetting-like effect by making the top and left clouds darker with a tone-curve filter.

October fog rolls in and my mind takes a turn to every horror film I have ever loved. Of course, it being close to Halloween also helps, but normally it doesn't take too much of an atmosphere to sway me that direction anyway. Here we have an ode to all of the Halloween movies, but especially II as that was the one that really sealed the deal and ignited a lifelong love affair with the genre. Already looking forward to the next one in 2018.

Heilongjiang Province, the most northeast part of China, when viewed on a map has the shape of a swan. Its capital city is Harbin, with almost four million residents, located south of Heilongjiang. Not only for its special position, but also as the centre of Heilongjiang's political, economic, educational & cultural life, Harbin is described as the pearl beneath the swan's neck. Lying on the east of the Songnen Plain, what is more, Harbin plays a vital role in communications between South & North Asia as well the regions of Europe & the Pacific Ocean.
Harbin was the birthplace of Jin, 1115-1234 & Qing, 1644-1911 Dynasties, the latter of which had a very considerable influence on modern Chinese history. At the end of the 19th century, Russia built the terminus of the Middle East Railway here. Later, more than 160,000 foreigners from 33 countries migrated to Harbin, promoting the development of a capitalist economy in the city. The economy & culture of Harbin achieved unprecedented prosperity at that time & the city gradually grew into a famous international commercial port. Assimilating external culture, Harbin created its unique & exotic cityscape. The majestic St. Sofia Orthodox Church & Zhongyang Dajie each built in a European style have the effect of bringing you into an 'eastern Moscow'. Besides these rich cultural heritages, Harbin is favoured with beautiful natural scenery. Based on meandering Song Hua River & subject to severe low temperatures in winter, done to -30°C, when I took this Pictures the Temperature varied between -20°C & -26°C but dry, Harbin boasts a unique ice & snow culture.
The impressive "Ice & Snow Festival" is the greatest & unusual one in the world, therefor Harbin is also called the "Ice City".
Also the large Siberian Tiger research centre, with about 500 tigers & a few other species, does a important work to prevent this specie from extinction. The Research centre can be visited, tours in small a bus are available, passing through wide natural, separated, sections, however the focus point is to save the tiger.
