This image provides a good example of the variety of textures, patterns and tones pintail ducks have in their plumage. They don't run unlike other ducks to take off, they spring directly into the air.
As you know by now, this is the bird that not only justified my visit to Barrow Alaska but also the adoption of "wildlife" as my main focus in photography. I like this photo because it is dynamic but also because it shows a feature of the bird I was not even aware of until I was sort of neck to neck with it. The feature is that black marking underneath the head which looks like a greek letter to me, sort of a stylized Pi π.
I thought this was kind of a cool shot. I am shooting down and the bear is shaking the water off.
Happy Bear With Me Monday...
My Ruffy, caught in mid shake. :-)
It's been a rough few days here.. now Ruffy has other things going wrong with her eyes, besides diabetes and going blind. Now her tear ducts decided to stop working, causing other problems. Hopefully all her meds, etc will do the trick.
But I'm really trying to start each day with a grateful heart, as they say. This morning, Ruffy seems to be feeling a bit better. I'm very grateful for that. :-) And I'm grateful for you, my Flickr friends, who go gaga over each others pics. Flickr is my escape. Thank you!! :-)
and p.s. I won't keep talking about this, as Flickr is probably your feel good place too. I just wanted to say why sometimes.. I'm just not around. Plus.. I just felt like it! ;-))
Hee hee ;-)
maybe she lies in the grass?
Friday already smiling for Saturday.

Have a good start into the weekend everyone!
Osprey misses its first attempt at grabbing a fish, so shakes it off mid-air in preparation for its second dive (which was successful). Atascadero Lake.
...I never miss a beat
I'm lighting up my feet
And that's what they don't see
That's what they don't see
I'm dancing on my own
I make the moves as I go
And that's what they don't know
That's what they don't know
But I keep cruising
Can't stop, won't stop groving
It's like I got this music
In my mind, saying it's gonna be alright
Cause the players gonna play, play, play
And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate
Baby I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake
Shake it off
Heartbreakers gonna break, break, break
And the fakers gonna fake, fake, fake
Baby I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake
Shake it off, Shake it off...
Elegant tern took to the air after unsuccessful dive and decided to shake it off... @Bolsa Chica ecological reserve
It's not the sort of fluffy seal image I normally like to take, but I liked the combination of the bokeh caused by the sun illuminating the pebbles in the foreground, and the backlit effect of the seal shaking off the sand. I also feel there was something universal about the seal reaching up to take in the emerging light.
I can watch this bird fish all day, every day. He arrived at the Lagoon with a crow and gull in tow, each taking turns at their particular brand of harassment. He then proceeded to kite for all of 3 seconds, dove, nailed a fish and retreated in record time, leaving his tormentors in the dust, baffled.
... just like a duck would do... not always easy but if a Pied-Billed Grebe can do it when needed, then we can all learn how to do it. First day of 2021 at the lagoon... It was so pleasant to be back there despite the fact that the conditions were far from being optimal for wildlife photography.

This big whitetail deer found a hole in the river, and had to clear some waterlogged ears. Be sure to see the next photo in the shake it off series. Have a great weekend!
Walks in the woods are always something special for me. When I got to the lake, I sat down on a bench and enjoyed the silence. A man came along and his dog, called polar bear, jumped into the lake, happy and high-spirited. In my head was just one thought -Shake it off-photo-! Eager to get the photo, I forgot that I might have the whole shake it off on me. How not thought, so happened! Oh my god Greta was wet from top to bottom. The white shepherd didn't care. The man grinned mischievously but apologized. Wet and satisfied with the photo, I made my way home.
Happy May 1st everyone!
Was entertained by 4 of these guys at Brydon Lagoon. I had a fun day of birding today with a wide range of birds including a locally rare Northern Goshawk, Mountain Chickadee and a Swamp Sparrow. The Grebe in this photo was obviously listening to Taylor Swift.
