Das Schloss Wernigerode ging aus der ab 1110 gebauten Burg Wernigerode hervor, die man über der Stadt Wernigerode errichtete.
Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte hat die Anlage einige Umbauten und Erweiterungen widerfahren. Nach den schweren Verwüstungen im 30-jährigen Krieg begann Graf Ernst zu Stolberg-Wernigerode im späten 17. Jahrhundert den Umbau der Burg in ein barockes Schloss.
Die Residenz besitzt auch drei zugehörige Garten- und Parkanlagen. Neben dem Lustgarten und dem Tiergarten erschließen sich an der südlichen Seite auch Terrassengärten in die wir hier schauen können.
