Vintage streetcar 1010 makes its way along Market Street on a dismal winter day in San Francisco. The steam, for the record, was rising from a network of underground heating pipes beneath the city streets ... and had nothing to do with Castro and cigar smoke :) Thanks for viewing! The San Francisco Municipal Railway, Cable Car 60. Known as MUNI locally. California and Drumm streets is where the cable car comes to a stop, and then will go back on a different rail to Van Ness Avenue.

Cable cars can't go in reverse, so they need to be turned around by hand here at the terminus of the Powell St lines.

The N Bus has been ferrying passengers from downtown out to the ocean, a poor substitute for the streetcars that have been sidelined for much of the past year due to COVID.

The cable car gripman must “drop the rope” precisely as the Powell car crests the hill, or the car will lose its momentum and slide backwards to Pine Street. It’s probably the trickiest maneuver a grip has to execute on the system.
