Update on Flynn, an FIV+ cat who we have recently helped to re-home.

I am so pleased to share with you a very happy update about Flynn. Below is a piece which Katherine (Flynn's new Mum) has wrote. Pictures have also been sent in by Katherine. Many thanks go to them for offering a loving home from all of us at sfhfc.

Flynn arrived just over two weeks ago and immediately made himself at home on one of the couches which is now his go to spot if a lap is not available. He is very affectionate and likes to be sat on someone’s lap or very close to them. He even waits until I am settled in bed on an evening and then comes and curls up beside my pillow and while he does get up and move around he is usually right back there when I wake up!

Like a dog he will bump his head under your hand for fuss and try to bury his head into your armpit or under your chin.

He is also very intelligent and polite – his first time into a room he likes to be invited, after that he wanders at will. The first time I went to the gym after work (his fourth full day in the house) when I didn’t come home at the usual time he went upstairs and meowed outside my partners room to be let in for fuss.

He has been to the vets once (he isn’t keen on the carry case) and goes again shortly for a full polish and clean of his teeth, he will also be getting a biopsy of his pads as he has a bit of dermatitis which is stopping him from scratching. But fingers crossed that will be easily treated.

Anyway Flynn has settled in incredibly well, he likes to play with a laser pointer, loves string, hunting spiders and enjoys trying to gut a catnip pillow I made for him. He has thoroughly endeared himself to his human servants.

pizzapiee13: Hey this is Taylor's mom. I'm not very good with instigram, I'm having to learn alot of new stuff. Taylor passed away on September 7. I've just been trying to keep up with some of the things that she loved to do, this was one of those things.thank you for being so kind to her. She was the most awesome kid ever and she was my life! After we gave Taylor a mention a few months ago I think a few of our followers also then followed Taylor so I just wanted to ket people know. I have used the lovely photo of her on her 14th birthday. I really hope you don't mind me doing this. I know how much Taylor loved IG and I have tried to do it in a way that she would have been pleased with. Update on Will

Unfortunately there is still no real change with Will. We have spoken to the vet and he will continue to be monitored at the vets. Will is quite bright in himself and enjoying a bit of fuss but he isn't eating and still has bad diarrhoea oozing from him (very smelly) and requires to be on a drip . So sadly he will be spending Christmas at the vets. I will keep you all posted when we know any more . (This photo of Will was taken a few weeks ago, lets all hope that he can return to health soon).

I just adopted from a nice shelter a long haired Tortie on Black Friday, 4-5 years old in perfect health according to them. Took her to my own vet about 1 1/2 weeks later who said the same thing, perfect health, great heart, lungs, teeth, everything was perfect. He said she was a beautiful cat (which she was). Well, last Saturday we woke up to her breathing very shallow and with difficulty so we brought her to an emergency pet clinic and they said she had "FIP", Feline Infectious Peritonitis". We had to put her to sleep right then and there because they said it was a fatal disease without a cure and if I did not put her to sleep, she would die a slow agonizing death. I am heartbroken! I miss her so much, she was so beautiful and so loving. Please tell me I did the right thing. I still cry and agonize over what I did and miss her so much. I only had her for 3 weeks...

sfhfc: @kittensmittenss hi there, I am so sorry for your loss. I don't know much about FIP bit talking to my wife ( @c1e5 ) there was nothing more that you could have done. FIP really is a dreadful thing and the vets were right that there was nothing more that could have been done. I know it won't ease your loss but in our opinion you couldn't have done any more for her. At least in the short time that you had her she knew real love

kittensmittenss: @c1e5 & @sfhfc - Thank you once again for your kind words. I do feel better hearing this from you and your wife since you work so closely with cats. I just feel so bad. I had to put my precious cat to sleep years and years ago but I had her for 17 yrs and she had cancer so it was an easier decision to make. I plan on getting a kitten probably some time in the spring, hopefully a healthy one. I do have a 3 yr old cat, a Russian Blue that was given to me about 1 1/2 years ago and she is not well either. When I got her, her fur was all licked off her belly and then it just got worse and worse until at least 1/3 of her fur was licked off. Got her on medications, shots and she finally got better. Now it started all over again in August and is again getting worse and worse literally by the day. Her whole belly, inside of her legs and now her knees are all licked off. Back to the vet I go with her. And this cat is so much the opposite of Sophie. We cannot pick this cat up, hold her or anything like that and she won't sit on our laps. She does, however like to sleep with me so I am very happy about that! Since she was given to me by someone who found her, I do not know her past, she could have been abused, thus no human contact. So these are 2 reasons why I think my next cat will be a kitten. THANKS SO MUCH for listening to me and for letting me vent. I appreciate all you have told me... HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OF YOU!

It's funny, after all these years I had never heard of it and the cat I fall absolutely in love with ends up having it after me having her only 3 weeks. You are right, we cannot fight destiny, but accept it. I can only think I gave her a good last 3 weeks of her life and she did not suffer long... Thank you for the hugs! I just had a bit of a crying spell about Sophie just last night! Peace and love to you...

c1e5: @kittensmittenss sorry to hear about your sad loss of Sophie. I was just reading about your Russian blue and her problem skin, our Mikey has had similar trouble although not to the extent that you have described. He has spent a lot of time on & off steroids & antibiotics to help his skin irritation. The trouble is the antibiotics were making him sick, the steroids were making him hungry and still his skin was irritating him. An injection of depo did work well for him but after meeting a wonderful lady who is an animal healer & communicator at sfhfc she suggested I try some sulphur 6 tablets. These have worked amazing & after only a short course Mikey is doing brilliant so I would recommend you get some of these tablets and give them a try for your Russian blue. Hopefully they may provide her with the relief that she needs.

Bob came to St Francis at the end of November 2011 after being found as a stray. His tail had been badly damaged so after consultation with our resident vet it was decided to have his tail amputated. It was at this point we discovered that Bob had the Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) which is why he came to St Francis. After a few weeks convalescing in our isolation area Bob was introduced to our other residents. Bob seemed to take longer than most to start to settle in at St Francis. We put this down to the fact that he was a young male stray cat who had recently been neutered and had his tail amputated and was struggling to come to terms with the fact that he could now not wander off wherever he wanted. Unfortunately six months on and Bob still hasn't settled in. Bob himself is adorable and very loving when any of our volunteers give him fuss. It is some of our other residents who just aren't letting Bob settle in. As you would expect, there can always be the odd raised paw or two when you have a multi cat household. In this case however we have a few of our residents who are hounding Bob which is making life uneasy for him. At St Francis we do not have the facilities to segregate Bob from the other residents for the long term. The trustees have also discussed that isolation for Bob long term would not be the answer as he himself is very sociable and loving. This has led the trustees to make the decision that they feel it would be best for Bob (and our other 20 residents) if we could find him a forever home. Due to Bob being FIV+ he would need to be kept as an indoor cat. Apart from having FIV Bob is otherwise a healthy 5/6 year old male who has a lovely black coat and doesn't require any medication. MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT OUR HOSPICE

Since being a trustee of sfhfc I have found when talking to people about what we do, there are some common misconceptions. Here are a couple of them

As we are a hospice people seem to presume that we have cats which are dying and in pain. I feel that this couldn't be further from truth. A large number of our residents do have Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) but this doesn't automatically mean that it will shorten the cats life. We also have a number of cats who have a thyroid condition. This is controlled by daily medication and is monitored closely by our volunteers and our vet. A lot of our residents are elderly cats. As a charity we generally think of cats over 15 years old to be elderly or as sometimes referred to as geriatric. They come to sfhfc for a number of reasons. It may be that their owner has died or is ill in hospital and can no longer look after their beloved pet. Or the owner is relocating and is unable for one reason or another to take their pet with them. These are often otherwise healthy cats that through no fault of their own find themselves without a home

Another main misconception is that a cat with FIV is always really poorly and dying. Yes it is a terminal illness with no cure but as you can see from the photo's which are posted on our blog there is no clear indication which of our residents do or don't have FIV. There are sometimes the odd side effect to FIV, the main one being stomatitis, this again can usually be controlled with the right medication. A lot of cats diagnosed with FIV live a happy, long and fulfilled life

Stevie (the blind cat)

It is with a very sad heart that I have to tell you that Stevie has crossed the Rainbow Bridge and is sadly no longer with us.

Some of you may remember his story.

Stevie had been through some kind of trauma which had left him completely blind. We at St Francis felt that it would be best for Stevie if we helped to find him a loving home where he could receive the one to one love and care which he required. We were so lucky that an amazing couple came forward to home Stevie with themselves and their furry family. I can't believe it's not quite been a year since Stevie went to live with Sue and David. Over the time that they have had Stevie he has received so much love and attention, I know we were really lucky to find them. Stevie even enjoyed having his own little outside patio area which had been specially made for him to make sure that he didn't have anymore stray encounters with the neighbouring cows. I know he used to love sunbathing out there.

Unfortunately over the past few months Stevie has suffered from many different ailments, and sadly his body seemed to be struggling to get over them. On this occasion enough was enough and after taking Stevie to the vets for one last time they had to sadly return home without him.

I want to take this opportunity to thank both Sue, David, Ginny (their three legged dog) and Tiger-Lily (their other cat) for accepting Stevie into their home and their hearts and also for giving Stevie an incredibly amazing last chapter to his life. We will never know the full extent of the hardship which Stevie had endured in his life before we found him but I am so pleased to know that the chapter which Sue and David created for him was a difficult but very happy one.

The other day while I was at St Francis I caught this snap of Sylvester destroying the mouse that was on the scratch-post out in the Lions Den. They love to be out in our outside area when the weather is nice. It was good to see Sylvester playing on the scratch-post, I must now add replacing that toy mouse on the list of jobs to do

I am really pleased to say that following our Amazon wish list going live last week we have already received no end of cat goodies. We have received toys, food, cat treats, a drink fountain, a mop & bucket, lots of kitchen rolls, cat carriers and some electric fly killers and a scratch-post

Hello. My name is Baby. I'm nearly 1 years old and I'm looking for a forever home . As you can see from my pic I'm pretty but also playful, healthy and I love my food. I was found as a stray by a vet at Derby PDSA and they have helped me as far as they can. I am FeLV+ so I need to be the only cat in the house and I've been told I need to live indoors. I really don't mind this as I'm currently living in a small pen. All I need is someone to give me a fuss now and then, a comfy bed (a comfy lap even?) to sleep. If this was a christmas wish list maybe a few toys to play with and a window sill so I can see whats going on outside. Oh ps I also like dogs. Thanks for reading my story xxx

Today Will has been to the vets. There have been a few concerns that he hasn't quite been himself the past couple of days and last night we were concerned about his breathing. We booked him in to our vets this morning and it appears that he has got a bad cut on his tongue, which knowing Will may have happened in a little scuffle as in the past he has been affectionately known as a 'hooligan' as he has been known to raise a paw or two over the years. It also seems that he is suffering from some diarrhoea so he has had some antibiotics and is now resting in our isolation area so that we can monitor his diet better over the next week or so

This was the first time we have used our new cat carriers which we received the other day off our Amazon wish list and I have to say I think he was a lot more comfy in it, it was also nice as there is a small flap where you can get your hand in to help comfort them while they are waiting at the vets. So a big thank you goes to the kind supporter who bought these for us

I think Will is feeling rather pleased with himself after all that ragging of the sisal rope. Our scratch-posts really are a good source of exercise for our residents, which is needed as our outdoor area isn't that large. Will had amused himself running up and down it and clawing at it for about 15 minutes when I took this shot of him.

sfhfc: Hi, @crazycatwoman . You do really need to speak to the vet but for a similar problem we had with one of ours, the vet nurse did advise to mix a bit of warm water with the cat biscuits. Although this didn't actually work for us it is something else for you to try. Hope you get her sorted soon

The remedies Are international, so you can find it under the same name. Search for R1 and R6 dr Reckeweg, cmps or drops, 1+1 cmps/4 hs or 10+10 drops/4 hs in two/three teasp of water. This for 2 days, then the same doses but only twice a day for a week. If you need more information, write on IG , the phone is on until midnight. Pls, tell me something about your cat...

crazycatwoman: @dotzarri Thanks for taking the time to respond to me! My cat has a virus (upper respiratory) that flares up a few times per year, usually when she gets stressed. She had a couple severe bouts when she was a kitten, but now that she is 2 the flare ups have been mild. She usually develops a secondary bacterial infection which is treated by antibiotics. She has never refused food and water before. I have been pushing fluids with a syringe and have given her milk replacement for nutrition until we can get to the vet tomorrow.

This weeks 'through my eyes' has really made me smile. I sat down just to see how all were doing. Straight away Zak, Joy and Francis were on my knee (you can just see Francis' ear. I just got ready to take the photo and I captured Zak doing the biggest yawn I've seen, just shows it must be hard work being 'Top Cat'. Solomon and Lulu are in the window catching the last bit of sun while Daisy patiently waits on the arm of the sofa. I am fussing her now as I type this .

It looks to me like Franky and the residents all enjoyed their fussing yesterday. It was lovely to see Franky relaxing like this as he does suffer with stomatitis which can flare up every so often. Once all the daily chores where done Nicky and myself sat and had a coffee and as you can see the residents enjoyed that. This is a regular sight once you do manage to get to sit down. But you know what cats can be like, not long after this photo was taken Nicky soon found herself with a few more litter trays to clean .

Cotton Tote Bag

We are looking to order some bags to sell which will help us raise money for our charity as well as offering a nice product for our supporters. But we can't decide which photo to use of our adorable residents. I have short listed four of them, I know I have my favourite, but thought it would be nice to see what our wonderful IG followers thought. ------------------------------- We are still finalising details regarding cost/quality but we are hoping to be able to order them in the near future. -------------------------------- We are also looking to see if anybody may be able to help us in dealing with posting any orders out. Our beloved Gizmo (RIP). Today has been a sad day at St Francis Hospice for Cats. We have had to say goodbye to our beautiful little Gizmo. She has been poorly over the past few weeks and last night took a turn for the worst. We booked her in to the vets today and our worst fears were confirmed. Following a consultation with our vet it appears she may have had a tumour so the decision was made to let her go.

This decision is never made lightly but we had done all that we could for her. Gizmo had come in to St Francis two years ago. She was a 15 year old incontinent lady who had lost some feeling in her back legs, probably due to an accident of some sort. Over the past two years that she has been with us she has found a special place in all of the volunteers hearts making this loss a very sad one.

The one thing we have to remember at these sad times is the fact that we have helped to give her a good last few years, enjoying fuss off us human helpers and also a lot of feline company. One of her favourite spots to lie was right by the heater in the main room. As you went in and sat on the sofa she would often walk over to you in her own unique style and come to sit by you for some fuss. The picture above shows Gizmo by her heater only yesterday enjoying some fuss off me.

Gizmo, you will be sadly missed by all.

Zoe's usual spot is on the shelf by the back door as she always likes to be one of the first to greet us volunteers. But here she is cuddled up in a cat bed in the Garden Room.

Tonight while i was at St Francis i gave Jiminy some fuss as he jumped up on my knee. Jiminy has been back at St Francis for a week now after his stay at the vets. The medication he is on seems to be doing the trick and he is steadily losing weight now that he is on a strict diet. We will continue to monitor him closely. We have even bought a harness for him but he wasn't too keen on the prospect of going for a walk. This is something we may have to persist with for a while.

Here is Pendle who at the time of me taking this photo was more interested in the piece of chicken that I had in my other hand rather than posing for a picture. He did enjoy his little treat

I am pleased to say that Pendle is currently doing very well. Following a consultation with our vet he is still on some daily medication after the concern we had a few weeks ago regarding a possible tumour on his anal gland. Our volunteers monitor him daily to see how he is and he will be going back to the vets for another check up soon. I know one thing, Pendle is a real fighter

Daisy update

Here's Daisy curled up in one of the cat beds in the Garden Room which seems to be her favourite place to be. Daisy is unsteady on her legs and is showing her age but thankfully seems to be to be alright in herself at the moment. She is enjoying a couple of bowls of chicken every day as well as getting a bit of extra fuss from all of our volunteers. Sadly we can't stop her getting older but we can ensure that she gets all the comforts and affection that we can provide.

I remember when Daisy first came to St Francis with her sister Lulu. It was a while before I got a good look at her as she constantly hid behind the sofa and just wouldn't come out while us humans were around. It took her a few months but once she did the first thing I noticed was her gorgeous eyes and I still think she has the most wonderful eyes .

carligirl: These kitties, do they get abandoned or do you rescue them shelters where they will not be adopted from?

sfhfc: @carligirl our residents come to us for many reasons. Currently we have 9 cats with FIV, all of which would have most probably been put to sleep if we hadn't taken them. Others are brought to us for various reasons. Gizmo is incontinent and his owners couldn't cope so she ended up at St Francis. You can find out more into about us on our website www.sfhfc.org.uk

sfhfc: @carligirl we also take in elderly cats whose owners have either died or been taken into care. We have currently got two old girls, Ruby and May who are waiting to come to us. We are trying to find these a home but it is not easy. Again full story is on our blog.

Ace is curled up on the chair in the corner while Solomon is sat wondering where he should settle down. Will is just coming out of the shot at the bottom as he had decided he wanted a bit of fuss off me .

Today Libby has been to the vets for a check up. We had noticed that she was making some wheezing noises so wanted to be on the safe side and get her checked over by our resident vet. I am pleased to say that Abdul has said that it is nothing too serious and she has had a couple of injections. Ourselves and our team of volunteers will be keeping an eye on her over the coming weeks.

Update on Will

Will's blood test results have come back and thankfully all looks alright with his liver and kidneys. Sadly though we still don't know what is wrong with him so we are currently going through the process of elimination. We work closely with our resident vet and will be in regular contact with them. Will is staying at the vets so that he can be monitored closely and he will stay on his drip and antibiotics until we know more

A big thank you to all of our supporters and followers who have sent Will such lovely and caring comments. They are much appreciated from us all at sfhfc at this worrying time

This photo of Bobby and Shy-Annie is not mine. It was taken by one of our lovely volunteers who come to St Francis to help out with the daily chores plus of course helping with fussing our residents. This is the last little montage of Paddy that I am re-posting. These were the first photo's taken of Paddy in his new home after one of our trustees had rescued six kittens which were only three weeks old and had been left in a box. I love to take photo's of all of our residents but I do find Houdini is just the most photogenic of them all. He is a gorgeous tabby who has become a little on the heavy side over the past 6 months.

I love this edit as it focus's solely on his beautiful face and I feel there is such beauty in a black and white edit of a tabby cat.
