If you are hiking at Sete Cidades-you are hiking on the active volcano that sits on the western part of the island. There are a number of hikes around the caldera and to various viewpoints.

The Sete Cidades Lagoon is located on São Miguel Island in the Azores - Portugal.

Beautiful as you have never seen. There are no other words to describe this magnificent view from Miradouro da Boca do Inferno, in São Miguel island.

High above the big Sete Cidades caldera and the other explosion craters inside it, nowadays filled with fresh water and covered with the typical Azorean green, you can sit down and let your eyes transport you beyond the thin ridge that separates land and ocean: if there's a slice of heaven in the Atlantic...well, it could be here.

I will be away for the weekend to catch up with friends from the ship Columbus.

The Lagoa Verde and the Lagoa Azul at Sete Cidades, as seen from the abandoned Monte Palace hotel near vista do Rei at the island of Sao Miguel in the Azores. According to local legend, the colors are from the corresponding green and blue eyes of Princess Antília and the shepherd she fell in love with, who shed (a lot of!) tears over their forbidden love, forming the two adjoining lakes. According to killjoy scientists, the different hues are due to cyanobacteria blooms and an overdevelopment of aquatic macrophytes and algae in the two sides of the single lake that is separated by a bow bridge.

One of the winding spiral staircases that lead to the 88 rooms of the Monte Palace hotel near Sete Cidades in Sao Miguel Azores. The hotel has been abandoned for several years already, after the project that was conceived in 1977 fell through. The hotel was closed in 1989 after just 19 months of operation, due to the low occupancy and the huge debt amassed. After the single guard who was supposed to monitor and take care of the property was removed in 2010, looters stripped the hotel of almost everything. Since people were entering the hotel, the local authorities, as a safety measure, removed all leftover windows in 2012, which encouraged further looting and vandalism.

Lagoa das Sete Cidades ("Lagoon of the Seven Cities") is a twin lake situated in the crater of a dormant volcano on the western part of the island of Sao Miguel, in the Azores archipelago (Portugal). The two lakes are connected by a narrow strait, which is crossed by a bridge. Due to their different depths, under clear blue skies they appear as the Blue Lake (back) and the Green Lake (front).

In Sete Cidades, in the island of São Miguel, a bridge of seven round arches separates the blue lagoon from the green lagoon that appears in the image. Supposedly the first one reflects the sky and the second the verdant slopes but since my childhood I got used to lie and just say yes every time someone asked if you could see the subtle difference.

Epic endless views over Sete Cidades

A man stands at his doorstep in one of the small streets of Sete Cidades, Sao Miguel, Azores.

Our first port in the Atlantic, Ponta Delgada in the Azores. four days after leaving Amsterdam. The weather was cold but no rough seas..
