All my pcs have pretty small hard drives so I built this sucker in September 2010 as a central storage location for my media libraries and photography archives. 12 Terrabytes of storage, 8GB ram, running Windows Home server ...

 

which is annoying as it's only 32bit and can't use all the ram.

finally, after two years of collecting parts, I'm building server number two this weekend.

geek technique... built on (top of) proven technology! (very proven i can tell you!)

 

today i received some CPUs by mail (not insured, not nothing and on the outside it said what it contains, two Xeons including value... it's a miracle they arrived! (well, or my mailman isn't a geek, which is quite possible)...

 

these are for my second server, so in total, my website will run on four (old) xeons... four cores! ...eeeerm... ;-)

this is great. ARD'd into a remote XServe, downloaded the OS Install disk image, restored it onto a spare HD installed in the machine, rebooted, pointed Server Assistant at it, and I'm installing without having to go over to the server room.

PLNX, our in-house RAID array, had a mobo meltdown over the weekend.

Each server rack has four switches, connected by a different coloured cable. Colours are kept the same throughout data centres so staff know which one to replace in case of failure.
