the Torre dell'Arenella, part of the complex of the Tonnara, Quattro Pizzi etc ... was built in 1852 by Don Vincenzo Florio Sr. (1799-1868), who had called a Dutchman to draw up the project. It served as a windmill or mechanical mill to grind sumac, a grass which, reduced to powder, was indispensable for the tanning of hides.
It worked for a few years, the exports were booming, then the workers began to get smart, mixing fake herb powder with that of the precious sumac, the result: the mill closed and business in smoke.
The tower also served as a lighthouse, as reported by an old nautical map of the port.
Arenella perhaps owes its name to the fine sand that once covered its coast.

Tulum (Spanish pronunciation: [tuˈlum], Yucatec Maya: Tulu'um) is the site of a pre-Columbian Mayan walled city which served as a major port for Coba, in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo] The ruins are situated on 12-meter (39 ft) tall cliffs along the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico.Tulum was one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Maya; it was at its height between the 13th and 15th centuries and managed to survive about 70 years after the Spanish began occupying Mexico. Old World diseases brought by the Spanish settlers appear to have resulted in very high fatalities, disrupting the society, and eventually causing the city to be abandoned.[citation needed] One of the best-preserved coastal Maya sites, Tulum is today a popular site for tourists.

Dioscorea japonica (Japanese yam, ‘Yama-no-imo’ in Japanese) is a perennial plant in the yam family, native to Japan and northeastern Asia. Its grated root is served as ’Tororo’ in Japanese cuisine. Hedera rhombea (Japanese Ivy, ‘Kidzuta’ or ‘Fuyu-zuta’ in Japanese) is an evergreen vine in the family Araliaceae, native to Japan and northeastern Asia.
This image serves as a call to action, urging us to acknowledge the existence of marginalized communities and their struggle for basic necessities. It prompts reflection on the systemic issues that perpetuate poverty and the need for collective efforts to create a more equitable world. While the girl's identity remains anonymous, her indomitable spirit shines through, leaving a lasting impact on those who encounter her gaze.

7 Therefore Jesus said again, "I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. 8 All who ever came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the gate; whoever enters through me WILL BE SAVED. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to STEAL and KILL and DESTROY; I have come that they may have LIFE, and have it to the FULL. (John 10:7-10)

Foro Romano - Roma - Italia / Roman Forum - Rome - Italy

Foro Romano

The Roman Forum
The Roman Forum, also known by its Latin name Forum Romanum (Italian: Foro Romano), is a rectangular forum (plaza) surrounded by the ruins of several important ancient government buildings at the center of the city of Rome. Citizens of the ancient city referred to this space, originally a marketplace, as the Forum Magnum, or simply the Forum.
For centuries the Forum was the center of day-to-day life in Rome: the site of triumphal processions and elections; the venue for public speeches, criminal trials, and gladiatorial matches; and the nucleus of commercial affairs. Here statues and monuments commemorated the city's great men. The teeming heart of ancient Rome, it has been called the most celebrated meeting place in the world, and in all history.Located in the small valley between the Palatine and Capitoline Hills, the Forum today is a sprawling ruin of architectural fragments and intermittent archaeological excavations attracting 4.5 million or more sightseers yearly.
Many of the oldest and most important structures of the ancient city were located on or near the Forum. The Roman Kingdom's earliest shrines and temples were located on the southeastern edge. These included the ancient former royal residence, the Regia (8th century BC), and the Temple of Vesta (7th century BC), as well as the surrounding complex of the Vestal Virgins, all of which were rebuilt after the rise of imperial Rome.
Other archaic shrines to the northwest, such as the Umbilicus Urbis and the Vulcanal (Shrine of Vulcan), developed into the Republic's formal Comitium (assembly area). This is where the Senate—as well as Republican government itself—began. The Senate House, government offices, tribunals, temples, memorials and statues gradually cluttered the area.
Over time the archaic Comitium was replaced by the larger adjacent Forum and the focus of judicial activity moved to the new Basilica Aemilia (179 BC). Some 130 years later, Julius Caesar built the Basilica Julia, along with the new Curia Julia, refocusing both the judicial offices and the Senate itself. This new Forum, in what proved to be its final form, then served as a revitalized city square where the people of Rome could gather for commercial, political, judicial and religious pursuits in ever greater numbers.
Eventually much economic and judicial business would transfer away from the Forum Romanum to the larger and more extravagant structures (Trajan's Forum and the Basilica Ulpia) to the north. The reign of Constantine the Great saw the construction of the last major expansion of the Forum complex—the Basilica of Maxentius (312 AD). This returned the political center to the Forum until the fall of the Western Roman Empire almost two centuries later.

The Wooden Pole on the Peak District's Longshaw Estate is said to stand on the site of an ancient pole. You can see the pole itself in the distance in the top right corner of this photo. Although periodically replaced by the National Trust, who now own the land, the original pole is believed to have served as a way marker/guide post on an old packhorse route and may also have marked the boundary between the villages of Hathersage and Holmesfield. Whatever its original purpose, it occupies a commanding position beside the A6187, and yet many visitors to the area drive past without even noticing it. However, its status as a landmark gives the whole area of countryside surrounding it the name Wooden Pole.

To all veterans of all branches: Thank you for your sacrifice, your bravery, and the example you set for us all. To all those who have served, and those who continue to serve… Happy Veterans Day!
Shown is the upper machine gun turret on the B17 Madras Maiden, taken when this rare plane visited Spokane.
When I turned 18 I was up for the draft as the Vietnam War was raging on. Rather than dodge bullets I enlisted in Rickover's Navy nuclear engineering program, getting a great education I later served as a nuke on 2 boomer submarines, deep underwater for a total of 577 days safe from any bullets. Was quite a unique experience. Was hard but joining the Navy was one of the best decisions I ever made. Came out a better man. And as it turned out I would have been drafted...my number came up.
We celebrate our veterans in America on this date. Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.
"In 1945, World War II veteran Raymond Weeks from Birmingham, Alabama, had the idea to expand Armistice Day to celebrate all veterans, not just those who died in World War I. Weeks led a delegation to Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, who supported the idea of National Veterans Day. Congress amended the bill on June 1, 1954, replacing "Armistice" with "Veterans," and it has been known as Veterans Day since." Wiki
violent storms on the Great Plains are notorious for the damage they can do...and for that reason much of the critical infrastructure such as power and cable lines are buried underground...additionally more storm-proof metal poles are being used such as the one on the far left above which leads to a water treatment plant that serves thousands of homes.

I believe there are less than 200 former Southern high hoods left in active service that haven't had their noses whacked. Many are yard jockeys that remain in captivity and go un-shot. However, every once in a while one of them escapes the confines of the yard and gets to stretch it's legs for a few days.
I was out and about earlier this week and was caught by surprise when I saw this battle worn GP38-2 on the Harrisburg local HH11. A few shots as they worked and off I went. But I was determined to catch him again and slow that shutter speed waaaaay down.
Yesterday, as the late November afternoon sun sunk lower and lower in the sky, the 11 crew needed to come out of Harrisburg Yard for some headroom so they could reverse back into another yard track to work the scrap yard on Cameron Street. BOOM. Time to roll. As the engineer grabs a fist full of throttle I ratcheted down to 1/6 and let the pixels fly.
This is the Maison du Roi, located in Brussels' Grand Place. Interestingly, despite its name, no king ever lived there; it served as an administrative office. The current building is a 19th-century reconstruction with neo-Gothic details, housing the Museum of the City of Brussels, where you’ll find the Manneken Pis costume collection. Fun fact: during the Middle Ages, the site was actually a bread market before becoming an administrative center. While its ornate façade amazes visitors today, its simple origins don’t take away from its beauty—they just make it even more intriguing.

Returning from fishing, a manu o ku serves up a breakfast of colorful, translucent larval fish to its nestling. The manu o Kū, bird of the war god Kū, catches fish and squid, often alternating heads and tails after multiple sequential captures. Manu o Kū is also known throughout the tropics as the white tern (Gygis alba). They are arboreal nesting seabirds, though no nest is actually constructed. These terns lay a single egg in a hollow or forked branch of a tree to incubate and raise a chick. Strong sharp claws and reduced webbing on their feet facilitate clutching the bare branch.
