Singapore, officially the Republic of Singapore, is a sovereign island city-state in maritime Southeast Asia. It lies about one degree of latitude (137 kilometres) north of the equator, off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, bordering the Straits of Malacca to the west, the Riau Islands to the south, and the South China Sea to the east. The country's territory is composed of one main island, 63 satellite islands and islets, and one outlying islet, the combined area of which has increased by 25% since the country's independence as a result of extensive land reclamation projects. The country is home to 5.6 million residents, 61% (3.4 million) of whom are Singaporean citizens. There are four official languages of Singapore: English, Malay, Chinese, and Tamil; with English being the lingua franca. This reflects in its rich cultural diversity and extensive ethnic cuisine and major festivals. Multiracialism is enshrined in the constitution, and continues to shape national policies in education, housing, and politics. 32736

An escaped pet bird, a rare male Mandarin Duck (Aix galericulata) was boasting about its beauty from a canal (Serangoon River) beside Hougang Ave 7.

12 June 2021 - A while ago, a pet male Mandarin Duck (Aix galericulata) escaped from its owner. It stayed in a canal (Serangoon River) beside Hougang Ave 7 during its short span of freedom. Widely regarded as the world’s most beautiful duck, the male Mandarin Duck is known for its eye-catching plumage. When rumors got to us about this rare and enchanting escapee, we rushed to the spot. The place was very crowded cos this Mandarin Duck had already achieved quite a lot of fame due to many reports and news about its beauty. We noticed that some kind soul has put a huge package of cooked rice into the canal, perhaps for the survival of the Ducky Celebrity. Fortunately we managed to secured a nice place and shot numerous pics of this gorgeous duck.

1st July 2021 - Heard that the escapee Mandarin Duck was caught by relevant authorities and returned to its owner. Its brief adventure sadly over.

Note: The Mandarin Duck is not a resident of Singapore. It is the native of Northern East Asia, eg: Japan, Korea, China and East Russia. And the Mandarin Duck is an endangered species.

Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis)

“The Little Grebe first arrived in 1992, at a little pond adjacent to the old Ponggol pig farms. By 1994, there were a few feeding and breeding across the Serangoon River, at a large pond, at the Serangoon Sewage Works. Colonisation from nearby Malaysia was a success and the grebe population continued to grow with a high count of 27 birds in 1996.

“Soon after, the large pond was filled in and although a shallow pool emerged from the original site, the only good pond that remained was the smaller pond. This pond continues to exist and holds the last remnants of the Little Grebe population. This had dwindled to just three birds in the last two years.

“The grebe makes a floating nest of water plants in the middle of the pond and it has bred a few times before, especially when the larger pond was around. The small remaining population still built nests but in many cases, these were not utilised. That is until this year. A nest was built in the middle of the pond and an adult sat on it. Even this behaviour did not mean nesting.

“The only record of a Little Grebe away from the Serangoon/Ponggol area was of one bird at the Tuas grassland. Why is the species not found at Sungei Buloh and other wetlands areas? One likely reason is the presence of the large predatory Common Snakehead or Aruan.

“So, is the Little Grebe to have a very short stint as a Permanent Resident?

Regards, R. Subaraj.”

Changi Beach Park is a beach park located at the northern tip of Changi in the eastern region of Singapore.

The 28-hectare beach park is one of the oldest coastal parks in Singapore, retaining the "kampung" or village atmosphere of the 1960s and '70s.

Changi Creek, reservoir,

Changi Creek Reservoir is a small service reservoir located to the north of Singapore Changi Airport in Singapore. The reservoir supplements and provides backup water supply for the airport. It was formed by damming the headwaters of a small river, Changi Creek, which empties into Sungei Changi and thence into the Serangoon Harbour. Rainfall from the runways and surrounding green areas is collected in the nearby South End Reservoir. Changi Creek Reservoir is used to balance flows during incoming tides and high rainfall.

This is one of the entrances to ION Orchard, the perhaps most famous mall on Orchard Road in Singapore.

Amazingly, I didn't find Singapore too crowded in spite the 720 km² city being inhabited by 5,5 million people. Only a few places felt a lot more crowded than the Scandinavian capitals: the Waterway Point in Punggol, the MRT interchange points like Serangoon and Dhoby Ghaut, and of course -- Orchard Road.
