Autumn in Sequoia National Park is like a fairyland or maybe a scene out of Avatar. I love going there in late October!

Spent couple days at Sequoia National Park. Giant sequoias are the biggest trees in the world and live up to 3200 years old. They grow naturally along the Sierra Nevada in California at elevations above 4000 feet. The area of sequoia trees concentration is called sequoia grove.

A recently processed image from my May 2016 trip to Sequoia National Park.
Both are found endlessly in Sequoia National Park.
Sequoia National Park is on Western Mono and Monarch land.
It's been a bear of a day... but wildlife and nature and looking back at pictures you took always helps.
This bear scared the hell out of me in Crescent Meadow in Sequoia National Park when I was hiking. He popped up about 5 feet from the trail I was on. I quickly backed up and gave him his space... and took about 20 minutes to get my heart rate back under control. Then I got my telephoto lens and snapped this shot from a safe distance.

This is an entirely new processing job applied to a photo I took and posted in May of 2016 from my trip to Sequoia National Park that year.
I'd only been shooting AEB (auto exposure bracketing) for HDR images for about six months and my results were astoundingly bad, as they are for a lot of photographers who begin using the process.
Occasionally, I'll find what could have been a stunner among the many photos I've taken, and using my current workflow and patience, can hopefully turn it into, if not a work of art, at least a better representation of the scene than I originally "saw" it and posted it years ago. This was photographed with my very first DSLR, the Canon Rebel t5i which was later ruined by a large wave at Dana Point the next year.

It's not just the trees that are giant in Kings Canyon. My niece and nephew were good sports to pose for this photograph. Don't ask why I had giant lollipops ... that's just weird. Kings Canyon National Park, California, USA, July 2023

One of the highlights of our trip was without a doubt Sequoia National Park!
In the presence of the biggest trees on the planet, you can't help to feel humble and small.
The sheer size of them makes it difficult to represent them in a photo and give them the respect they so truly deserve as the one of the oldest living plants on Earth.
General Sherman is an estimated age of 2,300–2,700 years.

Here is my 1st attempt to share this magnificent tree with you.
Thanks for looking

While we lived in LA, a quick getaway meant either Yosemite or Joshua Tree National Parks with Death Valley occasionally thrown in. Now while these parks are fantastic locations to visit, they require quite a bit of planning due to their popularity in recent years. So a quick getaway is not a possibility. Then we heard about Kings Canyon and Sequoia National parks. They were closer to us than the other parks except for Joshua tree. When I learned that the canyon is deeper than the Grand Canyon, I was hooked. We made an initial exploratory trip to the park and found it was mostly just us a couple of other families. The remoteness and rather sparse amenities once inside the park make it a challenging destination for most people.
On the benefits side, the views my god the views, it seems like this park has some stunning viewpoints overlooking some actual wild landscapes. Then comes the stunning Canyon and the brilliant Giant Sequoias.
One of the coolest geographical features is the Morro rock at the Sequoia national park that provides you with a high vantage point to view the entrance to the park. I made this trip in 2013 and discarded this panorama shot as unusable because, quite frankly, none of the software I had at the time could make a decent stitch of the image. But when I was going over my pictures and saw this series, I tried my luck again with photoshop cc and voila!
The General Grant Tree is the second-largest tree in the world, standing 267 feet tall, and nearly 29 feet wide at the base.
The tree was named in 1867 after Ulysses S. Grant, Union Army general and the 18th President of the United States (1869–1877). President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed it the "Nation's Christmas Tree" on April 28, 1926.
When we arrived to Kings' Canyon Park in the afternoon, we walked around the tree and used Planit for Photographer to plan the night shooting. We knew there would be moon lights when the time to shoot milky way. But we were hoping it wouldn't bright when it was setting. However, when we got in the position at the night, we couldn't see milky way clearly as we planed. So, I took a star trail instead of milky way:-)

If you know where to look, the stars can come out early in a National Park.
Sequoia National Park is Western Mono land.
The public was skeptical when early explorers told of giant trees in California. To prove that they lived, the tree was cut into pieces and shipped across the country to exhibit as freaks.
One of the giant sequoias was cut and reassembled for the America's Centennial Exhibition in 1875. People laughed it off as "California Hoax".
I have never been to Sequoia in the Autumn. I guess I did not think there would even be any color there. I was SOOOOOOOOOO wrong. The ground is covered in ferns that turn so many different hues and the Dogwood trees turn pink and gold (I'll post one soon). So even though I only had one glorious rainy foggy morning there it was a morning I will NEVER forget. Thirty-two degrees, only saw about 25 other cars the whole morning, and I walked and walked just absorbing the wonder of this place.

The North and South Forks of the Middle Tule River have giant sequoia trees growing alongside their banks. Most sequoia groves are not by large streams like this.
Access points to redwoods along the Tule river forks are at Camp Nelson (south fork) and Camp Wishon (north fork). For anyone with the time to explore, beautiful compositions of giant sequoias and flowing water are possible.
We didn't have a lot of time on my recent trip, so I am not holding this one up as a prime example, but it gives a taste of the area. I'm not sure, but this may be Belknap Creek, a tributary of the South Middle Tule near Camp Nelson. I hope you like the dappled light.

Sometimes, the second you’re done traveling, and in the absence of all that motion and purpose and fun and discovery, you immediately miss it. You crave it. You could have just gotten off the plane. You could have just unpacked your bag. It doesn’t matter. You’ll get in the car, put on some music, start to drive, and realize you’re not doing to see something new. You’re not going to see something exciting or relaxing. This is just a regular old drive to run errands or pick up groceries. It’s not one of those special drives down a winding road laden with purpose and anticipation. It’s just a regular day. And on that regular day you begin to crave adventure again.

The river was running strong this spring and the area I was standing on was a little cramped. My sunglasses were tucked in my shirt, and when I leaned over to check some camera settings they fell out and into the river. They were prescription, but luckily I wasn't carrying my regular glasses. That would have been even worse. Since then, I've kept a better grip on my glasses. The composition has better balance as a square on the left, but I like all the roots on the tree. One of the truly amazing geological formations in Southern California is actually located in the often-overlooked Sequoia National park and its called the Moro Rock. Moro Rock is a granite dome rock formation in Sequoia National Park, California, United States. It is in the center of the park, at the head of Moro Creek, between Giant Forest and Crescent Meadow. A stairway, designed by the National Park Service and built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, is cut into and poured onto the rock so that visitors can hike to the top. The view from the rock encompasses much of the Park, including the Great Western Divide. Use of this trail is discouraged during thunderstorms and when it is snowing (source: Wikipedia).
When we have family visiting, we usually take them on a tour of some national parks around us and this summer we took everyone on a trip to Kings Canyon and Sequoia National parks. The first day we visited the Sequoia National park and after seeing some of the giant trees the park is named after we decided to drive up the Moro Rock road once the road restrictions have been lifted. We had a wonderful time running up the stairs and enjoying the beautiful scenery. The sun was still pretty high up in the sky so the light was not that great but as we were coming down, I noticed this really cool composition with the spiral stairs and trees.

Driving past the Giant Forest Museum in Sequoia National Park. The Sequoia trees were amazing! This was our first visit to Sequoia and hopefully not our last! We were there during a nearby forest fire. The smoke from the fire left a haze over much of the landscape.
We stopped at the Museum the next day. There was a small black bear in the fenced area in front of the museum. People were stopping to get a photo of the bear when the Park Ranger chased it away. Bears in the park make frequent visits to the center and to the campground to scour for food. It is so dangerous to approach wild bears.
