The Helio Sequence at Bumbershoot 2012 - Day 1 at Seattle Center - Seattle on 2012-09-01

Kahu/Swamp Harrier sequences;
I had the privilege to photograph the local Kahu that cruise the skies above our cottages. Although there are usually 2-3 local birds- they circle the cottages several times a day- at one stage I counted eight birds hoping to drop in for a feed.
The dead rabbit was on the road outside & a couple of hawks were in danger of being hit by passing cars so I transferred it over the fence & then set up the tripod, camera & remote to take photos as they came & went.
Many of the birds were mantling; trying to hide their prey or protect it from the hawks circling above or protect it from incoming birds trying to steal it.
Some did it better than others.
Females are larger than the males (and usually steal the food), and darker coloured birds are youngsters, hawks lighten up as they age.
Often the fighting was out of frame, it was a bit hit & miss as I had my camera focused right on the rabbit. Several times I missed the action but all in all I managed to get a few good shots.
