Inside the Statue of Liberty there is a plaque that is engraved with the poem "The New Colossus," by Emma Lazarus. It reads:
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
It's a powerful poem, and a reminder that immigrants are the ones who built this country. It's a shame that the sentiments of this poem, and the symbolism of the Statue of Liberty, are being ignored, degraded and insulted by our current government.

Reminds me of the poem Rainer Maria Rilke (autumn)
The leaves are falling, falling as if from far up,
as if orchards were dying high in space.
Each leaf falls as if it were motioning "no."
And tonight the heavy earth is falling
away from all other stars in the loneliness.
We're all falling. This hand here is falling.
And look at the other one. It's in them all.
And yet there is Someone, whose hands
infinitely calm, holding up all this falling.
Dusk and her embrace.

Summer
I am beginning to think that I often shoot a memory I have had. I look for them. Somehow, what I want to shoot calls up or reminds me of something distant. And the older I get, the more these memories really tend to grab me. Like this one for instance, in a single image are moments from every summer before I turned fourteen. And when I look at this I see myself, heading home for the day, tired from playing in the fields and dirty from the dust. Still, with my head slightly bowed, I am already looking forward to the next one.
Anyway....lost in summery thoughts today.

Most definitely the sentiment I felt from the rocky outcroppings while walking the Angel Rocks Trail in the Chena River State Recreation Area. The views across this river valley with the ridgelines and peaks...they seemed to stretch on and on to a distant horizon.
In order to help bring out that grandeur of this setting up in Alaska, I decided to angle my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward. I would be using some of the nearby outcropping and trees and then letting the layers of ridgelines across this setting slowly draw the eyes into the image. Angling my camera slightly downward would also raise the horizon and make the ridgelines and peaks seem bigger. I would still though include a portion of the blue skies and clouds above to fill in the rest or the upper portion of this image. The blue skies would also act as a color contrast to the yellows and greens of the forest below.
For post-processing work, I made some initial adjustments with contrast, brightness, and saturation using different settings of DxO PhotoLab 2. I then exported a TIFF image to work with some filters in NIK Color Efex Pro 4. I experimented with a few to create a recipe (Polarization, Low Key, Foliage and Pro Contrast filters) that seemed to bring out this look that had some drama and that “extra” to the final image.
Entitled "Between Sea and Sky," the exhibition features 65 photographs and two videos depicting twenty Dutch communities in traditional costumes. With his vibrant work, Nelson celebrates the beauty, cultural richness, and authenticity of humanity.
The Anglo-Dutch photographer is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking books "Before They Pass Away" (2013) and "Homage to Humanity" (2018), which present captivating photographs of unique indigenous peoples in the world's most remote regions. The elegant coffee table book "Between the Sea and the Sky" (2022) is a visual and artistic narrative exploring the rich cultural heritage of Nelson's adopted homeland and features over 350 intimate portraits and iconic landscapes.
With this inspiring series, Jimmy Nelson pays personal homage to time-honored traditions. He combines the timeless elegance of Dutch naturalism with contemporary portraiture. For both individual and group portraits, this passionate artist and storyteller uses a large-format analog camera. The result is picturesque and romantic images, rich in detail, reminiscent of the famous Dutch masters.
The intrinsic beauty of human diversity and shared heritage reinforces the sense of global interdependence, a recurring theme in Nelson's work. Visitors are invited to engage in a visual dialogue and reflect on the importance of cultural preservation and unity. With its unique blend of historic and modern architecture, the monumental Fotomuseum aan het Vrijthof provides an ideal setting. The museum organizes a parallel program with artist talks and school activities.

For today's theme I realised I had nothing left from my childhood that invoked any real emotion in me except for photos ... and I thought that was a bit of a cop out.
My teddy bear picture looked a bit playboy bunny (in outtakes) .... so this is the one I posted of me playing with my nephew at a family party tonight.

Either a love carried with burden or a freedom loaded with loneliness is fragmentary.
Yet in real life it's hard to embrace the perfection people wistfully thought exists.
Love always carries with it burden; freedom is accompanied by loneliness still.
The only thing to do is bringing them as close as possible to each other.
To feel free in love and embrace love in freedom.
We all hunger for love yet desire for freedom at the same time.
We protect the spiritual I and wait for the hundred percent love to
bathe in the hundred percent spiritual I.
It’s the feeling of embrace, the self-embrace when passion faded.
The closeness of soaked sleeves to the skin,
the stickiness of attachment,
a way of talking to oneself.
I found this plow sitting on the old ramp at CSXT's little Pittsfield Yard and used it to capture my sentiment. I sure wish something would eat these ubiquitous GATX blue lease units and give us matched yellow and green Housatonic power back!
But I'll shoot what I can get in 2021 so here is HRRC train NX12 up from Canaan with GP38-2s 2627 (originally a straight GP38 blt Jan 1971 as Penn Central 7916) and 2328 (blt in Feb 1966 as Illinois Central GP40 number 3011) they have just cut away from their little six car train on Main 1 of the old Boston and Albany just west of CP147 on modern day CSXT's Berkshire Sub. They will couple to their big pick up and start switching up the the half mile long stub of the old B&A North Adams branch that remains in service as far as the former crossing over Route 9.
If you wish to learn about the history of the railroad in general please check out the long form caption with this shot on a different day:
And for more Housatonic shots be sure to check out my Housy album.
