Head shot of a large male northern elephant seal who arrived early for the breeding season. I hope this shot shows the sensitive side to an animal that is not always seen as beautiful. This male had scars all along his body was most likely going to receive new ones in the upcoming breeding season.
Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Open dry woods along US 12 east of Route 49. This is a very uncommon species in northern Indiana. Note that the lower petal is about twice as long as the others. Note also the small gland near the base of the petiole of the compound leaves. Note the young legumes forming in the lower half of this photo.
