the world we live in will someday never know the old ways

I left the container of peanuts on the deck safter getting tired of continually putting them out for the squirrels and jays...I was surprised at how persistent the jays were and they emptied the container, going through lots of crazy antics in the process..

Well, I didn't expect to see a crew member climb up onto the wings of a PBY Catalina, pull out a dipstick, and check the engine oil before winding up the engines - kind of like you would do at a self serve gas station. It makes perfect sense, of course. It's all what you're used to seeing, I suppose.

The aircraft named "Mary K" from the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum was visiting a local "Wings and Wheels" event. It's distinctive profile was a joy to see - and hear - the sound of those two 1200 hp Pratt & Whitney engines is unmistakable.

It's getting close to closing time.

When you take a drive in the country, you just never know what you might turn up. It's why I enjoy driving round aimlessly. On our September trip to Warwick, we came across this rather unusual self service vegetable stall just outside Killarney in Queensland.

Which reminds me, next weekend is peak time for Sunflowers on the Southern Downs round Warwick. They only flower at their best for a brief time and next weekend is predicted to be it. They have apparently become quite a crown puller. It's only two hours from Brisbane folks who live in SE Queensland.

However in practice, we have noticed a LOT of impatient pacing and foot tapping when Ashley is asked to wait while we complete single person daily tasks like mailing packages. This is why a proper beta testing period would have been helpful. Take it from me... NEVER go straight to production when designing new software/hardware.

Not sure how that works. I guess you text to arrange payment before picking it up. I used to buy eggs in a barn up the road (I never saw the residents!) where you would open up the fridge, get out the eggs and leave the money in a box.

The side of a service station and small grocery store in the small town of Circle, Montana. Located in the middle of nowhere and in need of fuel, this gas station was a welcome sight.

I took a brief journey to Montana last week, which means I spent more time in my automobile than I spent in Montana. The trip gave me a chance to get a feel for the area and what I might expect living there in the days and weeks ahead.

There were photo opportunities all around, but because I was on a tight schedule I didn’t stop often. I instead made a mental note and hoped each of those scenes would be just as pristine and remarkable when I return.

When the author John Steinbeck drove across the country and detailed his travels in the book “Travels with Charley” he wrote, “I am in love with Montana. For other states I have admiration, respect, recognition, even some affection, but with Montana it is love.” I have not yet made it to the most beautiful corners of Montana just yet, but I already understand what Steinbeck saw in the “Treasure State.”

Montana has such a vast and wide open landscape; one of the reason they also call it “Big Sky Country.” As I drove across Montana along the Missouri River I wondered aloud what Meriwether Lewis and William Clark must have thought when they first explored the same corridor. Only 200 years removed from their overland expedition to the Pacific Ocean, much of the land remains and looks exactly the same and is largely untouched by the steamroller of man. There aren’t many places in the United States where that is still true. And where man has made his indelible and unfortunate mark, the places are older and more antiquated than what I’m used to seeing. It was like a time warp for me.

I truly look forward to photographing this beautiful state.

In the heat of summer, wildlife activity slows right down. The critters are still around; it's just that they are more active during the cool hours of night and early morning. And so, to get the shots, I get up early.

And yes, that's me pumping gas into the rolling red Toyota blind. I'm wearing my grubbiest outfit, because in the back of my mind I always assume that at some point I'll be crawling through mud. And with that, let me introduce a new image series: not quite a day in the life, but maybe half a morning.

I live on the edge of a big national park; it's six, ten or twenty minutes to my three favourite entry points. This was a typical morning in July, and what I found to photograph before the sun got too high and the light flattened out and the heat drove most critters - including me - to lie low for the remainder of the day. We're heading for the north gate, ie. the main entrance to Grasslands National Park and the Ecotour Road. It will take about 20 minutes to get there if I don't stop. But I will be stopping...

So hop in - the passenger seat is empty - and take a little tour with me for the next few days. July is not the most productive month for prairie wildlife photography, but by making myself available when the critters are likely to be out - and most of my own species are tucked away in their beds or sleeping bags - good stuff can happen.

To fully enjoy the pure taste of Great Oak natural spring water, thoroughly sanitized containers must be used. Use 1/2 teaspoon of liquid bleach per gallon container. Mix bleach and water by shaking and let stand five minutes. Empty container, rinse with clean water, let air dry and recap.
