If I followed my every whim and emotion
They’d lead me to a detonator
Reduce my life and family to rubble
Maybe I’ve misunderstood
There are consistent longings and aversions
Compulsions and phobias
Rather than do what I ought
What I must
What I would do
If I were someone else
I must do what I’m inclined to do
In spite of superego’s protests
What I love
What brings me joy
Satisfaction
And all the noble deeds
Well I’m sorry
Someone else will need to do them
Someone with different dreams and nightmares
Someone with a different heart.
