This isn’t one of my daily subverted #selfies. Although it could be. That post will come later, & I promise to try & keep it lighter.
I wanted to address the 3 #breakdowns I’ve had this week, 2 of which ended up being captured on my @instagram #story #reels: 1 on Sunday night, & 1 yesterday afternoon. I had a 3rd today but I didn’t record it, although I snapped a couple of snapshots as I knew I wanted to #write about it. And yeah it does feel really fuckin’ weird to #record & #photograph yourself #sobbing.
I know these are #heavy. The #sobbing in my reels came about as I was talking about my shit. It could have been so easy to stop recording, but I didn’t. I know it looks like #attention seeking, & it appears #desperate, selfish, #manipulative, & like I’m just seeking #pity, #sympathy or just #likes & #follows.
I’m not.
I’m just trying to convey how the #depressed #brain can get stuck focussing on #negativity, to the point where one feels like they’ve been robbed of all #optimism. There’s also been a degree of #curiosity, wanting to be able to look back in these experiences one day when I’m in a stronger & more balanced state of being. Thankfully, the #mind can be #reframed to recognize the positive, and to breakdown #challenges into manageable tasks but this does take time.
Having said all that though, I do think it’s important to note that during yesterday’s breakdown, I ended up chatting with a friend of mine who said “…if you love to live in self pity no one is going to care about you.” That hit close to home and it made me respond in a rather snarky manner. I was offended and responded that I wasn’t living in self pity, but at times in a state of self hatred & loathing that comes on strong from time to time.
“I’m not worth pity,” was my ultimate response to her, to which I deservedly received an emoji side eye 😒.
#SelfLove is something I’ve always #struggled with. I’m trying, but my monkey mind often finds it easier to harshly #criticize myself to the point of #paralysis than being gentle. It’s why reframing has been such an important focus of mine in recent weeks, as I try to pick up the shattered pieces of my #life from the side of the #highway.
Jerry Useem, writing for @theatlantic on February 8, 2021 in an article called “Bring Back the Nervous Breakdown: It used to be okay to admit that the world had simply become too much.” Useem describes how the use of the word phrase NERVOUS BREAKDOWN first came about in 1935, during a time when “Unemployment in America stood at 20 percent. A potential polio vaccine was failing trials. The term Dust Bowl made its first appearance in newsprint. A thousand-mile storm carried away much of Oklahoma… as widespread as the common cold and the chiefest source of misery in the modern world.” Anyone could be susceptible; it could be precipitated by nearly anything, and it prevented one “from carrying on the business of normal living.” Resolution of the breakdown entailed a time-out…”
Over time, Useem also notes how, “…by the mid-1960s… the concept was getting pushed to the margins by the rise of mass-market, prescription-driven psychiatry… The developing field had little use for an affliction that could be treated without the assistance of physicians. Diseases like major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder—diagnosed and treated by specialized doctors dispensing specialized drugs—replaced the nervous-breakdown catchall. This did quite a bit of good: Many people with psychological ailments gained access to medical treatments that could be effective. But something important was lost… (Ultimately), the nervous breakdown provided sanction for a pause and reset that could put you back on track.”
So if you see someone like me posting about my suffering know that it’s ok to experience suffering. But maybe suffering is a harsh word - feel free to substitute it with the term dissatisfaction. It’s okay to be dissatisfied, it’s ok to be overwhelmed, it’s ok to breakdown sobbing. Don’t let seeing that be a point of judgment… that was a key takeaway in the mental health first aid course I took this week with @stjohnambulancebc … to listen non-judgmentally.
Also, for those not trained in mental health first aid, it’s also okay to ask how someone’s doing without feeling like they don’t have any answers to give to help someone out. You don’t need to have any answers at all. Sometimes, just asking how someone is doing is more than enough.
This is definitely more than a little ridiculous. And unfortunately I didn't have as much time to work on this as I hoped, but it works for my 365, a podcast entry, AND half nekkid Thursday!!

Shimmerah placed Multordan into a magic ring, establishing its rules and powers. Her multiversal power dwarfed that of powerful rulers. She teleported beyond to the Superverse, altering multiverses to her will as if they were mere dust. She then found herself within a timeless Existence, an endless plane of shimmering black-gold sea. The sky was black, yet light persisted. She flew to its end, only to discover it had no end. There was nothing but this endless plane. She encompassed it, but still, there was nothing. Multordan, from within the ring, stated she was in the Outerverses. A gold pillar then appeared before her. She was not in her true form, as the space was different. A voice from all around said, "What do you seek?" Shimmerah stated, "The components of panpsychism." The voice responded, "To each, you take only evil, which will fall, and through your greed, the Multiverses shall become dark." Shimmerah replied that she did not care. The voice inquired, "Why do you want everything?" Shimmerah said, "Because I want everything, and why should I explain?" She displayed a shiny gold gem and took it. Then she was within a black and pink temple in the Outerverse. There was nothing but a shiny pink gem hovering. A being tried to stop her and said, "Why do you think you have the right to have so much?" Shimmerah giggled, saying, "As I am the most beautiful being there is, all should worship me and only me." She enslaved the being and took the gem.
Next, she came to a warping world, always changing and glowing with powerful runes. She was now aged 14, and time was running backward. She rushed to take the white gem before her age regressed too quickly. As soon as she took it, she was still 14 but no younger. Multordan spoke, saying, "Never again will that age or time be stopped unless you wish it." Next was a crystal realm—no light, no beings, just endless, still, glowing red crystals. Shimmerah was in her true demonic form, her crown ablaze, her horns and eyes glowing red. A voice said, "Here is your true self. The world is full of evil and wickedness. Your selfish greed and pure, narcissistic self-centeredness run deep into your core. You shall still want more, even when all is yours." Shimmerah giggled, searching for the gem, and said, "But I will have all power to make and have whatever more I want." She killed the being and took the gem. Next, she was within a black void of nothing. She could see as there was light without light. She saw white shadows with no beings, and she had no shadow of her own. The being spoke, saying the shadows were souls of those who once lived. "You have no soul, as you are darker than any shadow." She used her powers, and all was gone, and she took the black gem.
Next, she gathered all the gems and, with her power, fused them into one. She was now in what appeared to be a glowing white city, a void of white light, and she became a giant and walked towards it. She knew it was the Void of Existence and Non-Existence. She saw only light, but within it was nothing and everything. She looked into the Void of Existence and Non-Existence as beings came to stop her, but they were nothing, and she turned them to dust. She ranked fourth among all superviruses. She knew her power was unstoppable, as she saw all and none more powerful. She stepped into the Void of Existence and Non-Existence, and all its power flowed into her, she was now the Ultra Goddess Shimmerah.
