SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii – Fifteen Soldiers, from the 25th Infantry Division, were honored for their contributions and selfless service during a retirement ceremony Dec. 4 at Sgt. Smith Theater on Schofield Barracks. The hosts for the event were Col. David B. Womack and Command Sgt. Maj. Jeffrey D. Sweezer, 2nd Brigade Combat Team command team. On behalf of the 2nd Bde. Combat Team and the 25th Inf. Div. we would like to say thank you for your wonderful service and a job well done.

November 12, 2018: The school hosted a conversation via video teleconference with His Excellency President Ashraf Ghani of Afghanistan to discuss the challenges of coalition-Afghan security cooperation and the future of the partnership. The conversation was moderated by Johns Hopkins SAIS Visiting Professor LTG David Barno, USA (Ret.) The Finance Minister of Afghanistan, Dr. Mohammad Humayon Qayoumi, also provided remarks during the event.
Who are our volunteers? They are parents who want to bring their family out for a day of service together, retirees willing to share a wealth of knowledge and experience, outdoor enthusiasts wishing to create and maintain their favorite recreation opportunities, and concerned citizens of all ages interested in making meaningful contributions. Here, our volunteers served as fishing guides for a wounded warrior fishing event at Gull Lake near Brainerd, Minn. Volunteers are essential to the St. Paul District’s mission. They play an invaluable role in selflessly giving their time to help the district meet our environmental stewardship, education, recreation and navigation missions. The Los Angeles Fire Department and the Los Angeles City Firefighters Association are proud to recognize Captain II Richard Moody as "Firefighter of the Year” for his many personal and professional accomplishments during calendar year 2023.
With 24 years of exceptional service to the people of Los Angeles, Captain Moody brings spirited leadership, selfless dedication, approachability and positivity to all he does.
Prior to joining the Los Angeles Fire Department in 2000, Richard spent ten years as a paid-call Firefighter and Captain for the Orange County Fire Authority.
After commencing his LAFD career, he quickly discovered a love for firefighting truck operations, and was soon promoted to Apparatus Operator, serving that role with distinction at Fire Stations 17 (Industrial Eastside), 102 (Valley Glen), 10 (Convention Center District), and 98 (Pacoima).
Earning a promotion to Captain I, he proudly served a leadership role at Station 41 serving Hollywood and the Hollywood Hills, before achieving a special duty position in LAFD Tactical Planning. His many contributions to that demanding specialty assignment helped him in earning a promotion to Captain II and service as the Task Force Commander at busy Fire Station 11 in the Westlake / MacArthur Park area. With a leadership style characterized by an open-door policy, Captain Moody has never missed an opportunity to train and learn alongside those in his command, and has been perpetually noted for always putting the needs of his crew first.
With Captain Moody's highly specialized skills and experience in high demand, he was soon assigned to the LAFD Critical Incident Planning and Training Section (CIPTS) to handle complex logistics, where he has supported the department's multitude of large-personnel commitments to incidents such as brush fires, civil unrest, municipal events, large-scale emergencies and memorial services for firefighters.
It is worthy of noting that he has served on the logistics cadre in almost every LAFD fallen member's memorial service for the last 20 years, as well as compassionately assisting other Fire and Police agencies in their most difficult moments.
His ever-expanding role within the Department and in support of allied agencies is indeed legendary, including service as a member of FEMA Task Force 1, Field Incident Management Team, and as a Trustee of the Los Angeles Firemen's Relief Association. A beloved mentor, he selflessly assists with LAFD In-Service Apparatus Operator training videos and has presented the essential After Action Review for the Apparatus Operators Core Program. He enjoys helping with Department related fundraisers such as golf tournaments, Hope For Firefighters and other important events, such as the LAFD Valor Awards.
Captain Moody served the demanding role as the Logistics Section Chief for the Getty Fire in 2019, overseeing the first-ever 100% City-Managed Base Camp for over 2,000 firefighters. It was a milestone success for our Department, and his Logistics Section set a new standard for the support, care and treatment of deployed firefighters in the midst of a major firefight.
At CIPTS, Richard has created a full-time logistical support group, supplying a wide variety of equipment and vehicles, developing vendor relationships and designing response procedures for both planned and emergency events near and far. He has an uncommon ability to say “yes” to - and most importantly deliver, any requested need from the Department or City, no matter how big or small, through the remarkable relationships he has developed within and beyond the LAFD.
As but one example, within 12 hours of the Mayor's request, Rich assembled and led a team to open a first-of-its-kind Covid-19 Public Testing Site at the LAFD Frank Hotchikin Training Center in Elysian Park, fully staffed by nurses, doctors and firefighters. The site served as the blueprint for and eventually expanded into the Dodger Stadium vaccine super-site.
Other special events that Captain Moody and his LAFD CIPTS team have overseen include the Space Shuttle Endeavour final move, U.S. Special Olympics, World Police and Fire Games, L.A. Port Fleet Weeks, Dodgers, Lakers and Kings games, The Summit of the Americas, and countless concerts, festivals, ceremonies, protests and award shows.
He is looking forward to participating on LAFD’s team to organize and manage a successful City deployment for the LA2028 Summer Olympics.
Without question, Rich exemplifies leadership and humility in the ever-changing role of our Department. The men and women of therefore heartily congratulate Captain II Richard Moody for being named 2023 Firefighter of the Year!

RFS Service Standard 7.1.9 (covid vax mandate) destroyed volunteering in the RFS for me and many other long-time RFS volunteers with many years of selfless community service. Neither the RFSA or the VFFA stood up and fought back against that utterly draconian directive that divided volunteers into the pro-RFS sheep/wonks who blindly lined up to get multiple jabs of experimental drugs and those who stood by their own ethics and integrity and refused to get Covid vax and/or to tell the RFS they had got Covid vax.
My brigade was totally pro-Covid-vax except me and I think 1 or 2 others. From the start of Lockdown 2.0 in July 2021 until I choose to withdraw entirely in 2023 after 21 years of active volunteering (2000 to 2021) I had absolutely zero involvement with my brigade because not only was there the official RFS mandate, but my brigade implemented *it's own* Covid vax mandate that banned un-vaxed volunteers from ALL participation in brigade activities (callouts, HR's, com-ed, training and social functions).
During the flood emergencies of 2020/21/22 the RFS totally banned un-Covid-vaxed volunteers from participating in 'strike teams' and other sorts of emergency response strategies to assist other agencies (SES, VRA, Army, Police, etc.)
What made it even worse was the brigade captain at the time (until the 2023 AGM) totally ignored my concerns and treated my extensive years of being a volunteer in the RFS like it meant nothing. This combined with the NSW government treating RFS volunteers like unpaid employees instead of actual volunteers sealed the deal.
At one time the RFS claimed to have '70000 volunteers'. I reckon the true number post Covid vax mandate would be 1/4 of that, or less, following how the Covid vax mandate drove so many people out of the service for good.

I was reduced to tears telling him my personal story, and then he looked me in the eyes and called me "brave beyond words" and then asked me if he could shake my hand and hug me.
I was completely stunned & humbled.
An unbelievable evening for me (following the advance screening of a documentary he is featured in called "Forks over Knives").
Found on military.com. As the narrative has it, Mr Washington was in San Antonio at Brook Army Medical Center, a major evacuation hospital for wounded veterans returning to the states. While he was there, He received a tour of the Fisher Houses, where the patients' families can stay during the recuperative process. He asked the escort how much one of the homes is, and subsequently wrote a check on the spot for a new house. You won't read about this in the papers because of the type of person he is.

“There will always be exceptional children like Owen who selflessly help others.
“It’s entirely in keeping with this young man’s personality that his immediate response was to warn others to help carry those who were struggling and enter the water himself. This was incumbent on his selflessness.”
Giving a statement on behalf of the family after the inquest, Ruth Hyde of Broxtowe Borough Council said: “We have the happiest memories of Owen, who was a young, caring, lively and affectionate son of whom we are immensely proud.
“His enthusiasm for life meant he put his heart and soul into everything he did.
“He was sweet, innocent and selfless, and it is consistent with his character that he risked his own life to help save others who got into trouble in the water at Beeston weir.
“Owen tragically lost his own life, but we are so proud of what he did; of the young man that he was; how he lived his life to the full; and how he related to others.
“He was a wonderful son and he will be in our hearts forever.”
Camp Zama's annual volunteer recognition ceremony hosted by U.S. Army Garrison Japan honored the many volunteers who support and contribute to the community April 22 at the Camp Zama Community Club. The ceremony revealed the youth and adult Outstanding Volunteers of the Year as well as the Outstanding Volunteer Family of the Year.
