“If you can spend a perfectly useless afternoon in a perfectly useless manner, you have learned how to live.”

Lyn Yutang

First shot taken with my new Canonet QL 17 G-III. The little dots on the water are ducks enjoying themselves and the white on the ground, well, it is snow and ice and slush still evident on Greenlake even after the weather in Seattle has again reached above freezing temperatures.

Of this 36 exp roll I only found perhaps 3-4 shots worthy of uploading. Everything else is either fuzzy or too bright.

Memo to self: practice, practice, practice.

note to self: practice being more discreet and quicker with sharp images when taking it of strangers immersed in their verbal exchanges.

These men were Waiting on the platform for the N at the same time that my friend and I had just finished our coffee date. It was interesting to see them discuss something intimately while both firmly grasping their dunkin donuts cups. Alas, they saw me and moved to behind the "Astoria" Black Post on our side, and so this was the last decent portrait I could take of them.

Tis the season....everyone i talk to has said these words to me in the past week! This book title caught my eye at the camp...for certainly it applied to the life of the camp, as well as the state that everyone gets into during this holiday season.

i decided today that i NEED to learn the word NO! i signed on to make a gift for someone i know. It is late and of course she needs it ASAP....so i am under the gun to finish it by Sunday...i began plotting it out tonight on the wood. It is lettering which i absolutely hate doing....but i felt the need to help her out. SO, i hope to get most of it done tomorrow...sand and buff it a bit and distress the edges in time to get it to her. Of course when i said i could do it....i neglected to remember that i will have the beans OVERNIGHT tomorrow night into Saturday...which makes doing almost ANYTHING impossible....sigh.....

Mental note to self.....practice the word NO, several times a day...followed by “I am sorry....i just can’t manage it right now....” or maybe i should just get into introvert bubble mode and wait until this whole holiday thing is over.

ok....i am now half an hour past when i hoped to be in bed...so off i go to walk the dog and fall onto my pillow in a stupor until morning.....i hope. Have a superb Friday and slip quickly into that delicious weekend!!

After meeting Ilona, my Stranger # 3000, two days ago, I was quite surprised to run into another Ilona today.

I had just noticed her strolling with her camera, making photos of the beautiful landscape.

It turned out to be such a lovely encounter in the sunshine.

"Little unexpected too," Ilona said. "I'm usually in a pretty meditative state and sort of in my own world while walking around and listening to music. "

As I asked her to pose for me, she agreed although she said that she was usually the one behind the camera.

"I'm not always most comfortable when being photographed, but I'm working on that."

While I tried the light from different sides, we exchanged some personal information.

Ilona is 21 y/o. She graduated two years ago, but hasn't made up her mind quite yet about her future studying plans. There are so many interesting subjects she'd like to study, like photography and journalism for example.

"You're still so young with all your life ahead," I agreed, "you'll figure it out once you're ready."

"Since graduation I have been letting life take me to places. I have been in no hurry to really plan my next step when it comes to studying. Right now everything seems possible and I'm keeping all the doors open.

"I've been taking time to really learn and gain knowledge about myself and the world. I've met amazing people and visited beautiful places and I will always have a yearning to go see different places and meet people and learn more as I go.

I don't really have career plans, I have life plans."

Ilona is inspired by music and art and creativity in general. She also loves photography and documenting moments.

"I believe very strongly in balancing the physical and spiritual self. Practicing listening to the inner voice instead of all the outside noises from society, media etc..

She said she was on a continuous journey to achieve and maintain that inner stillness and positive way of life.

"It's not always the easiest way, but in the end, it's definitely the most rewarding.

"I think we could all aspire to be more conscious and aware of life and ourselves. The key is to introspect and learn the power of our thoughts and emotions and to put that in practical use in everyday life."

Ilona's message to the world is to be grateful, loving and focusing on the positive.

"This world needs more peacemakers than anything else."

It was very cold, but meeting Ilona had brightened my day.

As we parted I felt like hugging her and she returned my hug.

We definitely need more people like Ilona in our world !

One of the first field shots with this camera. I was in a real hurry because I knew a cloudburst was headed my way and I did not have an umbrella or a cover for the camera

Composition is coming a little hard at this point and I think I should have backed up a little to get more of the falls and then done a vertical crop later. A little more to the left might have been good as well. I was very pleased, though, to see how nicely Ektar 100 does in the dim light of the Columbia River Gorge and in the 6x7cm format.
