We stopped by South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands on our journey towards the Antarctica Peninsula.
The King Penguins breed on this island.
They are so adorable — and simply ignore the humans (aka us). We’re told to always keep 10m away from them.

The king penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) is the second largest species of penguin, smaller, but somewhat similar in appearance to the emperor penguin.
King penguins mainly eat lanternfish, squid, and krill. On foraging trips, king penguins repeatedly dive to over 100 metres (300 ft), and have been recorded at depths greater than 300 metres (1,000 ft)
The king penguin breeds on the Subantarctic islands at the northern reaches of Antarctica, South Georgia, southern Argentina, and other temperate islands of the region. It also lives on Macquarie Island in the Southern Ocean.

Four Musicians (moo, roar, chee-ow & yeeeoh)
2010
‘… a musical piece to be performed by musicians. The backdrop is important. It is the inspiration for the composition of the musical piece, the gusto of its performance and also its “speech”.’ – Okwui Enwezor
Four Musicians (moo, roar, chee-ow & yeeeoh) is a performance and sculpture by Joachim Schonfeldt, based on the German folklore tale of the Bremen Town Musicians, as recorded by the Brothers Grimm. In the original tale, a cat, a donkey, a rooster and a dog, past the primes of their lives, leave their masters’ homes, band together and set off on an adventure to Bremen, proving that the whole is stronger than the sum of its parts.
The tale has been retold and interpreted many times in popular culture (film, animation, theatre, literature) and has been represented by a number of contemporary artists (including Maurizio Cattelan).
Four Musicians (moo, roar, chee-ow & yeeeoh) the sculpture substitutes the donkey, dog, cat and rooster with taxidermied animals: an indigenous Nguni cow, a lioness and a vulture – all symbols of African pride and power. The sculpture rests on a base resembling a traditional Zulu shield, in reference to the theme of conflict and security. Schonfeldt also stacks the animals from large to small – an effective inversion of power relations.
The sculpture functions as a backdrop to a performance of original music by James French executed by four musicians stationed opposite the sculpture and playing a selection of cornet, trumpet, trombone, french horn, baritone or tuba. These wind instruments infuse or breathe life back into the inanimate objects or animals.
The artist states:
‘The piece performed by the musicians is in essence the work. I anticipate it to be a bit like the idea of ‘windjammers’, an American circus concept that describes the intensity of the music played during the climax of an act. The stuffed animals are, to a large extent, backdrop: the often mentioned augmentation in my work. The animals augment a ’speech’ here. The speech is represented by the commissioned piece of music performed by four musicians. The four blow instruments give an impression performance of the four animals (moo, roar, chee-ow & yeeoh); ‘A full breath of air’ perhaps the operative idea. The piece of music is of a circus-band nature and very intense, performed at high pace and leaving all "breathless"’.

While Acura engineers are certainly concerned with creating generous amounts of pulse-quickening power, their first priority is ensuring that the power is created as efficiently as possible. Consider the ZDX engine, which utilizes two separate cam profiles in order to generate peak performance throughout the powerband. A cold-air induction system packs in more oxygen for more powerful combustion. The use of materials like aluminium and magnesium allow result in a lighter, more agile vehicle. Open the throttle and you'll instantly appreciate the power of innovative thinking.

Public housing estates in Hong Kong are a critical component of the city’s housing strategy, providing affordable accommodation to a significant portion of the population.
For me, these orderly structures are beautiful — offering a beautiful balance of macro vs micro. On the outset, you see macro view of boxes. When you zoom in, you see variations within each of the frames.
I like to photograph architecture from afar using a long lens. I have found this to be the best way to remove the need to correct for perspective distortion during post-processing.

From top to bottom:
1. Toshiba HD DVD Player. Clearly useless now though useful for some HD DVD collection purchased when it first came out. I wonder if the studio would let me trade in HD-DVD for Bluray equivalent?
2. Oppo Digital BDP-83. Blu-ray Disc Player w/ SACD & DVD-Audio. Amazing performance. Highly recommended!!!
3. Cambridge Audio Azur 540D DVD Player. No use now though the DVD-Audio processing is pretty sweet so keeping it for now. The unit contains Six 12-bit/54MHz video DACs - and you really can tell a difference.
4. Monster Power block. It's much easier when the power source is not on the floor. Clean power is noticeable for high def. The electricity circuits in my building is really nasty so this helps.
5. Denon AVR-3801. Have this for years. Still enjoying it. Although a bit cramp in the back now that I have used up every single channel.
These lockers seen at the Supercell Headquarters in Helsinki are intended to be used by visitors.
They’re beautifully designed. The staggered forms of small, medium, and large sizes create visual rhythm that makes it pleasing to look at.
Turning utilitarian objects into artistic expressions that delights is an aspect that’s often overlooked by brands.
Everything can be and should always be designed. When you show attention to detail in the smallest things that no one else care about, it’s a testimony to the other things that you do care about.
That’s what makes a brand stand out.

Believe it or not, I met Juhan Sonin three years ago on librarything.com, a social media site for book lovers. LibraryThing has an interesting feature which compares similarity of libraries and Juhan came out as in my top 3 list.

Volkswagen has been trending for a while in the social media sphere in recent years. Their retro vans and beetles have been remixed to unrecognisable magical form. So to see this at Art Basel is a surprise. The higher echelon of the art world often feel somewhat dated, filled with “old people” hiding behind the gates in their ivory towers. It is unclear if this means that they are rebranding, or perhaps simply that Asia is the “new world” in art as California is in the world of wines.
This work is by Indonesian artist Ichwan Noor (b. 1963), an artist born in Jakarta and studied at the Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta. He got his idea of this piece from his personal perception that objects are products of a “transportation culture,” which induced hints and signs of spiritual emotion.
For this sculpture / installation, real parts from VW Beetle '53 is used as raw materials, and combined with aluminium and polyester to form this majestic sphere measuring 180 x 180 x 180 cm. Exposure to Indonesian contemporary artworks is a first for me at Art Basel Hong Kong, and I am seriously considering traveling to Indonesia for more.
Seriously. Crazyisgood. SML Love. VW lovers rejoice!

The Saint Sophia Cathedral in Harbin (聖索菲亞教堂) is a former Russian Orthodox church located in the central district of Daoli, Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province, China. Built in 1907 and expanded from 1923-32, it was closed during the Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution periods, and turned into a museum in 1997.
The church stands 53.3 meters (175 ft) tall, occupies an area of 721 square meters (0.18 acres), and is the perfect example of Neo-Byzantine architecture. The main structure is laid out like a cross with the main hall topped with a huge green tipped dome. Under the bright sun, the church and the square area it lies on looks quite like the Red Square in Moscow.
Pictured is the view of the church from its side, where pigeons gather around its facade. Photographed with the Canon EOS 6D + Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM.

I knew that this won't work as a portrait when I photograph it. The reflection on the window is too great and it literally cuts off her head. But then I can't really get them to open the windows, and there is some interesting things happening with the forms of the bridge, the people in the car that you cannot really see, as well as the pedestrians on the road from the reflection - you can call this a one-frame collage!
