A little holiday experiment...I was reading that fresh cranberries float. Wanted to see for myself! Here are the very scientific results!!
The first half mile of Mosaic Canyon started out fairly promising—relatively narrow, with smooth walls. But it opened up after that, with the same friable conglomerate walls that characterize the other canyons in Death Valley. So I turned around. Hope I didn't miss out on anything too great.
Note as well, there appears to be a very slight halo in the sky along the canyon on the left. This is present in the original capture and not an artifact from post-processing. My guess is that there are two causes. First, the sun was just behind the canyon wall. Second, the visual system naturally creates and/or accentuates the border between light and dark areas—called Mach bands. This phenomenon is something to keep in mind when processing photos. More info here (a website I helped develop a while back).
