The Esplanade overlooking Darwin Harbour in Darwin Northern Territory Australia

The Esplanade overlooking Darwin Harbour with approx. 3klm of paved walk ways surrounded by lush green lawns and palms.

There are many places of interest such as the 200 Territorians On the cliff top running parallel to the Esplanade is a series of commemorative tiles dedicated to 200 typical Territorians.

They are not all famous figures, but they all performed jobs upon which the Territory relied.

There are people such as Ah Toy's, the greengrocers from which vegetables were shipped all over the ‘Top End' by air freight.

There are stockmen and missionaries, politicians and aboriginal leaders.

Then there is Eddie Connellan, who ran the Territory airline Connair (unofficial motto, ‘There's no tellin' with Connellan'), and many other colourful characters.

There is also the World War 11 reminders of what darwin experience many years ago. From the Espanade at the end it adjoins the road past the Administrators House.

As you walk or drive alond the esplanade you look out over to darwin Harbour and often you see large Live Cargo ships, Luxury passenger Ships and even Oil Rig Platforms coming and going thru the habour. 'Only in Darwin'.

As always so hard to get lost as the Esplanade is virtually a striaght strip of land for app. 3klm until it bends around Government House to the back of the bus terminal general area.

The Esplanade as it gently bends around Parliament House.

Then up past the Administrators office and Dameo Ra Pathway steps

The Esplanade then continues on and becomes Harry Chan Avenue where it is known mainly as the offices for Darwin City Council. Just after Smith Street finishes at.

The Esplanade the there is a noticable picturesque shaded road veering off right down the hill.

This is Hughes Road and leads to the Wharf Precinct. At the bottom of this road turn left for Stokes Hill Wharf and the cafes or right for Fort Hill Wharf.

Port Arthur is a town and former convict settlement on the Tasman Peninsula, in Tasmania, Australia. It is located approximately 97 kilometres (60 mi) southeast of the state capital, Hobart.

Collectively, these sites, including Port Arthur, are described by UNESCO as "... the best surviving examples of large-scale convict transportation and the colonial expansion of European powers through the presence and labour of convicts."

In 1996, the town was the scene of the Port Arthur massacre, the worst instance of mass murder in post-colonial Australian history.

The General Post Office is a colonial-era building situated on 141 King William Street on the north-west corner of King William Street and Victoria Square. It is the former General Post Office for South Australia. Postal services operated from the building between 6 May 1872 and 11 October 2019.

A 14-story hotel was built behind the historic structure, starting in 2021. It opened as the Adelaide Marriott Hotel in 2024.

History

General Post Office

The original building was constructed in the period 1867–1872, and was the most expensive building constructed to that time by the colonial government in South Australia. It was constructed from Glen Osmond and Glen Ewin stone, and ornamented with Bath limestone.

A competition was held in March 1866 for the design of the building, with the winning design submitted by Edmund Wright in collaboration with Edward Hamilton. They were at the time in practice with Edward John Woods, and Robert G. Thomas may have had a hand in the design.

Prince Alfred, The Duke of Edinburgh, was involved in laying the foundation stone, who also officially named the clock tower Victoria Tower on 1 November 1867. The capstone was put in place at a ceremony on 25 May 1870. The height of the tower was put at 154 feet (46.9 m), a little taller than the Albert Tower of the Town Hall on the other side of King William Street. The original plans had the tower somewhat taller, but R. G. Thomas was obliged to redesign it, as a cost-saving measure.

The building was extended in 1891-92.

There was also an office tower addition to the original post office in the 1920s.

Hotel

On 14 October 2019, Adelaide's GPO was relocated to the adjacent GPO Exchange tower at 10 Franklin Street. Plans were announced for the original building to have with a Westin hotel built atop it.

In April 2021, South Australian premier Steven Marshall attended a sod-turning ceremony, to mark the beginning of construction on the hotel. The hotel was estimated to cost A$200, with property developer Greaton handling the construction. Designed by local architects Baukultur, the tower, on the site of the 1920s addition, will retain the entire original GPO building, with some sections incorporated into the new hotel. Upgrades to the structure as well as additional seismic retrofit have been added, to ensure the structural integrity of both the old and new buildings. The topping out ceremony took place in October 2023, and included an Aboriginal smoking ceremony by traditional owner representatives Kuma Kaaru.

The 285-room, 14-story hotel opened as the Adelaide Marriott Hotel on 22 August 2024.

Darwin Waterfront

Our story

When we reflect on the Darwin Waterfront and harbour over time, we think of it as a place that people came and went, a ‘maritime hub’.

Water is a prominent theme of Darwin Waterfront's history, environment, culture through Larrakia stories, recreational spaces and leisure activities.

The Larrakia people travelled the harbour, fishing, hunting and gathering food, conducting ceremonies and visiting sacred sites and countrymen.

Early surveyors, adventurers, settlers and gold seekers arrived by sea and crossed and re-crossed the harbour from this point to access the interior, carve a home out of the harsh tropical landscape or seek their fame and fortune. The railway also started and finished here.

From the 1930s, the spectacular flying boats landed and took off, and the pearling fleet was based nearby.

For many years cattle were loaded at what was then known as Darwin Town Wharf, with a small side jetty used as the flying boat terminal.

Right up until World War II, it was the place where everyone who was coming from and going to Darwin passed through. Stokes Hill Wharf, that you can see today, was completed in 1956 and was the main wharf until East Arm Darwin Port was completed in 2000 and Fort Hill Wharf was refurbished in 2005.

Cruise ships soon became a distinctive feature and as the Waterfront was the first view international visitors had of Darwin the area was developed as a place to walk, sit by the water, swim in the lagoon, dine at world-class restaurants and enjoy spectacular sunsets.

Today, it is a tropical lifestyle destination that attracts over a million people each year

Adelaide Arcade

The elegant Adelaide Arcade is a beautiful and intriguing example of South Australia’s living history. Opened in December 1885 to widespread acclaim, its distinctive domes, ornate details, and architectural grandeur had never before been seen in Adelaide.

It took 200 workers an unprecedented five months to complete Adelaide Arcade and the adjoining Gay’s Arcade. Considered extremely progressive at the time, new building materials and techniques were used, and it was one of the very first buildings in Adelaide to have electric lights. Featuring Carrara marble floors, glass-panelled ceilings, and extra-wide promenades, the Adelaide Arcade was a place of opulence.

The official opening reflected this grandeur, with street closures, crowds of onlookers, a visit from the Governor, and an orchestra playing ‘The Adelaide Arcade Polka’, especially composed for the occasion.

At the time of its opening, the Arcade housed 50 shops. Store owners would retail their wares from the ground floor, while their workrooms, accessed via an internal staircase, were located above on the first floor. The addition of a balcony level in 1968 doubled the number of stores in the Adelaide Arcade and provided the beautiful aesthetic we still enjoy inside the Arcade to this day.

In a life spanning three centuries, Adelaide Arcade has been home to many interesting tenants. One of the most exotic was the Turkish Baths, where you had your choice of warm baths for a shilling or Turkish baths for four shillings. Beneath the main floor was an underground chamber where patrons could enjoy refreshments. While the entrance was closed for many years, the tea rooms are now visible through a glass floor that has been built over the original ironwork staircase.

The uniqueness of the Adelaide Arcade doesn’t reside solely with the retailers. Did you know the Arcade has its own Coat of Arms, visible beneath the domes? Or that the fountain at the Rundle Mall entrance moved homes many times before finally coming to rest in its current location? The Balconette at the Grenfell Street end was designed as an orchestral gallery where bands played, and grand balls were held in Gay’s Arcade. The Arcade also saw the unfortunate and gruesome death of the resident caretaker in 1887… rumour has it his ghost still walks the promenade at night.

The Arcade has seen many changes through the years, from the addition of central trading booths in the thirties, the introduction of the balcony level in the sixties, and a major fire in the eighties. Over the years, however, the Arcade has been lovingly restored to its nineteenth-century glory and maintains its position as the luxurious heart of Adelaide’s central retail precinct.
