A rainbow is a meteorological phenomenon that is caused by reflection, refraction and dispersion of light in water droplets resulting in a spectrum of light appearing in the sky. It takes the form of a multicoloured circular arc. Rainbows caused by sunlight always appear in the section of sky directly opposite the sun.

This section of the canal is between Renton's Bridge and Nicholson's Bridge. On the left you can see Ripon Racecourse and to the right the tops of motor boats moored at the Ripon Motor Boat Club.

Ripon Motor Boat Club was established in 1931, having celebrated its 85th anniversary in 2016 the club is now one of the largest inland waterway boat clubs in the country.

The Ripon Canal is located in North Yorkshire, England. It was built by the canal engineer William Jessop to link the city of Ripon with the navigable section of the River Ure at Oxclose Lock, from where boats could reach York and Hull. First used in 1773 and closed in 1956 consising of 3 locks over its 2.3 miles

In 1961, members of the Ripon Motor Boat Club formed the Ripon Canal Company Ltd, and gradually restored the canal up to Littlethorpe. Subsequently, the Ripon Canal Society spearheaded restoration, which was completed in 1996. It is now managed by the Canal & River Trust

The sun sets every day. I'm pretty sure everyone has seen it more than once. Yet every time there's a pretty sunset it's like the seventh wonder of the world.

As I was taking pictures nearing sunset, so many people were taking pictures of it on their phone. It was a completely clear sky and you could see the sun really well. I think phone pictures of sunsets are bad. The type where you just center the bright blob in the middle of the screen and snap a pic. I took one myself to send on Whatsapp and it was just really, really bad.

I guess what those pictures exist for is to send someone quickly. As the saying goes "A photo is worth a thousand words".

The colors in this picture are natural, I only boosted them a little. I said it was a pretty sunset.

An unusual subject that caught my eye whilst out wandering on a wet afternoon - the remains of an old punga tree fern stump that has been sawn through, wet with rainwater and with new life springing from within! Worth an image I thought.

The total length of all sections of the Great Wall of China ever built adds up to about 21,196 kilometers (13,171 miles), including overlapping sections that were rebuilt. The wall constructed during the Ming dynasty, the most well-preserved section, is about 8,850 kilometers (5,499 miles) long.

Great Wall of China great wall is an extensive bulwark erected in ancient China, one of the largest building-construction projects ever undertaken. The Great Wall actually consists of numerous walls—many of them parallel to each other—built over some two millennia across northern China and southern Mongolia. The most extensive and best-preserved version of the wall dates from the Ming dynasty (1368–1644) and runs for some 5,500 miles (8,850 km) east to west from Mount Hu near Dandong, southeastern Liaoning province, to Jiayu Pass west of Jiuquan, northwestern Gansu province.

White-bellied Sea-Eagle

Scientific Name: Haliaeetus leucogaster

Description: The White-bellied Sea-Eagle has white on the head, rump and underparts and dark grey on the back and wings. In flight the black flight feathers on the wings are easily seen when the bird is viewed from below. The large, hooked bill is grey with a darker tip, and the eye is dark brown. The legs and feet are cream-white, with long black talons (claws). The sexes are similar. As in other raptors (birds of prey), Males (2.5 kg - 3.7 kg) are slightly smaller than females (2.8 kg - 4.2 kg).The wingspan is about 1.8 m - 2 m. Young Sea-Eagles are brown as juveniles than slowly become to resemble adults in a patchwork manner, acquiring the complete adult plumage by their fourth year.

Similar species: The White-bellied Sea-Eagle is the second largest raptor (bird of prey) found in Australia. The largest is the Wedge-tailed Eagle, Aquila audax, which stands up to 1 m tall. The Wedge-tailed Eagle is mostly brown, with a wedge-shaped tail. Young Sea-Eagles may be confused with the Wedge-tailed Eagle, but differ in having a paler head and tail and more steeply upswept wings when soaring.

Distribution: White-bellied Sea-Eagles are a common sight in coastal and near coastal areas of Australia. In addition to Australia, the species is found in New Guinea, Indonesia, China, south-east Asia and India

Habitat: White-bellied Sea-Eagles are normally seen perched high in a tree, or soaring over waterways and adjacent land. Birds form permanent pairs that inhabit territories throughout the year.

Feeding: The White-bellied Sea-Eagle feeds mainly off aquatic animals, such as fish, turtles and sea snakes, but it takes birds and mammals as well. It is a skilled hunter, and will attack prey up to the size of a swan. Sea-Eagles also feed on carrion (dead prey) such as sheep and fish along the waterline. They harass smaller birds, forcing them to drop any food that they are carrying. Sea-Eagles feed alone, in pairs or in family groups.

Breeding: White-bellied Sea-Eagles build a large stick nest, which is used for many seasons in succession. The nest can be located in a tree up to 30m above the ground, but may also be placed on the ground or on rocks, where there are no suitable trees. At the start of the breeding season, the nest is lined with fresh green leaves and twigs. The female carries out most of the incubation of the white eggs, but the male performs this duty from time to time.

Calls: Distinctive loud "goose-like" honking call, which is heard particularly during the breeding season.

Minimum Size: 75cm

Maximum Size: 85cm

Average size: 80cm

Average weight: 2 630g

Breeding season: May to October

Clutch Size: Two.

Not long after the previous photostream photo was taken, the second section of the "Lakeshore Limited" also crossed the Vermilion River. For one living in the land of no daylight passenger trains in the 1970's, it was a real treat to see two passenger trains like 30 minutes apart (or something like that). Of course, it was anything but a treat for the passengers of the very late train. For some reason, Amtrak had decided to take the Boston section, train #449, and continue west all the way to Chicago this day as a separate train. They basically followed #49 as a second section, from what I recall. More details on that day, including an excellent shot, can be seen on my friends Flickr page as noted below.
