Not too noisy!

$25 eBay lens, diaphragm stuck wide open.

Check out the next image in my photostream for an unstacked, noisy version of this starfield.

ISO 12,800 and 2 second exposure to minimize star trailing while capturing some fainter stars.

I shot 31 "light" frames, and a forgotten number of "dark" frames, all stacked together with Deep Sky Stacker to hide hot pixels and reduce quantum noise.

Shot in Big Valley, California, on a concrete slab next to our largest hot tub. Big Valley has dark skies, and plays host to the Golden State Star Party (GSSP) each year, about three miles from our Ranch.

I used to use this gun to target shoot in the house when I was younger. I'd set up a paper target and shoot down the hallway from my bedroom to the opposite end of the recreation room (hehehe don't tell mom).

Jan 1. There was a blue moon last night (second full moon in one month). Unfortunately, I was preoccupied at midnight last night. I thought that sending off 2009 with a blue moon is pretty cool and wanted to pay tribute to the awesome sky I saw tonight.

Obviously it looks better when viewed large on black

Happy 2010 everybody and good luck, especially if you are starting a 365 today.

New year's resolution: to take better pictures because I know it's in me. Why not just go all out? You only live once.

This XM15 was purchased when the Clinton assault weapons ban was still in effect - I don't mind missing the bayonet lug, but I intend to have a gunsmith add a flash suppressor to the barrel one day. It just looks really weird without one.

You've heard of "gun porn" and "torture porn." This is "gun torture porn." In the wake of Katrina the New Orleans PD illegally confiscated many firearms, and left them to rust and worse.

Washington DC, Saturday March 24, 2018. Hundreds of thousands gathered here today to protest the ever more frequent gun massacres that have sadly become one of the defining features of life in the USA over the past thirty years. The shootings have evolved into increasingly more deadly events because of the ease of obtaining semi-automatic rifles, high capacity ammo magazines and other weapons of war. Organizations like the National Rifle Associations have successfully bribed our national legislators to beat back most attempts to enact sane gun laws that would ban civilian sales of these military munitions. In the wake of the Parkland, Florida high school mass shooting a youth led movement* has become energized and is pushing back against the gun lobby status quo and, it has to be noted, against the entire immoral agenda of Trumpism and 21st Century Republicanism. President Trump spent today at his golf resort in Mar a Lago, Florida. Again.

*There has been an active black led movement against gun violence and other forms of vigilante and police violence in America for many decades but it has been ignored or unfairly reported on by corporate media and actively harassed by police wherever it appeared. The most recent example is the Black Lives Matter movement.

The tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School and most Americans' concerns about how to reduce the incidence and body count of such events has still proved a sad and disturbing holiday season blessing for those, like Academy Sports & Outdoors, who deal in the tools of such slaughter, and for the National Rifle Association, which uses member contributions to lobby for the manufacturers of and dealers in the instruments of carnage.

Lines (like the one above at my neighborhood Academy) quickly formed at counters of gun dealers and racks quickly emptied of assault weapons, large capacity magazines, and other tools of mass killing.

Here's hoping that 2013 brings at least the beginning of regulation of instruments of mass murder and a reduction in the obsession that some gun "enthusiasts" have for arms and accessories that are suitable neither for self defense nor for hunting and that only serve to maximize body counts. We all know that we won't be able to completely eliminate incidents like Newtown, but banning assault weapons and large capacity magazines may reduce the number of incidents and would certainly lower the body count.

We also need to have background checks and a waiting period for any sale of a firearm, including sales at gunshows and between individuals.

One of my hopes for year 2013 is that those folks who worry that the Second Amendment is somehow threatened get longer attention spans and discover that the second amendment contains twenty-seven words and that all of those words are important, not just the last fourteen, or the last four.

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Definition: infringe: defeat, violate, frustrate, transgress

A visit to the gun department of Academy or a few moments within hearing of a gun range make clear that the "right of the people to keep and bear arms" has not been defeated, violated, frustrated, or transgressed. The body count in killings using guns makes clear that the gun situation in America is a long way from being "well regulated" and that America's gun owners do not, in any way, represent a "well regulated militia".

Because, of course, it is a mental-health problem AND a gun situation, making it easy for a domestic or other issue to turn to mass murder.

Guns on display at anti-Islam rally in Phoenix. Protesters brought plenty of firepower to a protest against Islamic terrorism and Islam itself on October 10. Police separated them a smaller group of counter-protesters. Held in front of the Islamic Community Center, the event was part of a broader "Global Rally for Humanity," with similar protests scheduled in other cities that day.
