In 717 a.C. a deadly weapon saved Byzantium from the siege of the Muslims, a type of fire that, once started could not be put out by water or by sand. The formula of this predecessor of napalm was a secret. The inventor of this powerful flammable mixture was Callinico of Heliopoli. The flames were thrown through siphons mounted on the forecastle deck of the ships. The scene reproduces a bronze siphon (as there is no bronze lego I made it also brown) installed on a Byzantine dromon, a ship about forty meters long.
The weapon was crew served.
There were at least 2 men handling the weapon and at least two seasoldiers protecting it and one strator (an officer, belonging to an elitist regiment (Opsikion)).
These soldiers were specially trained for seabattle and the ones that served as part of the siphone crew were the best. Altought some of these siphons got captured and much ammunition got captured, no one could lift the secret. The ammunition was made mostly in Byzanz, because the ammunition and the weapons were made by masters. No one of them knew the whole secret, so if one got captured, the enemy didn't know the secret. The weapon was last used by the fall of Constantinople, as the Turks attacked.
This is built after some pictures and models, that were built after old descriptions in Arab and Chinese fonts, but the stand/frame isn't that accurate.
To put it all in a nutshell:
The siphon was sth. like a big flamethrower. The secret of it was a states secret. The soldiers that served at the siphon had special skills and the soldiers wore heavy armor, which was untypical for seasoldiers.
What I don't know is where/if there was a pump, to shot it very far.
