Every Spring I search for Loons along the Milwaukee Lakefront. They Usually stop by on their migration to lakes in Northern Wisconsin. They bring with them their beautiful haunting calls that take me back through time <3

Laufskálavarða is a lava ridge, surrounded by stone cairns, close to the road north of Álftaver.
Travellers crossing the desert of Mýrdalssandur for the first time would pile stones up to make a cairn, which was supposed to bring them good fortune on the journey.

Sicalis flaveola (Saffron finch / Canario criollo)
Mainly a seed eater, the Saffron Finch generally searches for seeds and small arthropods on or near the ground.
There has been some disagreement as to whether the Saffron Finch belongs in the family Emberizidae with the sparrows or Thraupidae with the Tanagers.
There are three, separate populations one in northern Colombia and Venezuela; another in Ecuador and Peru and the third in north-east Brazil to central Argentina.

An early shot from this morning. We went out in search of migratory sparrows (LeConte's and Nelson's) with limited success, but the fall color was gorgeous and our typical winter sparrows (Swamp and Savannah) were out in quantity. This guy gave a nice peekaboo pose among the fall forbs. BK Leach Conservation Area

White-throated Sparrows stay near the ground, scratching through leaves in search of food, often in flocks. You may see them low in bushes as well, particularly in spring when they eat fresh buds. White-throated Sparrows sing their distinctive songs frequently, even in winter.

Dipper:-
A dipper with it’s chick waiting to be fed, hidden away at the foot of the waterfalls.
A short-tailed plump bird with a low whirring flight. When perched on a rock it habitually bobs up and down and frequently cocks its tail. Its white throat and breast contrasts with its dark body plumage. It is remarkable in its method of walking into and under water in search of food.

If you look carefully you may be able to see two Hector's Dolphins. These small dolphins are only found in New Zealand's waters and we were so lucky to see them surfing the waves :) One of many special moments we were fortunate enough to experience last year during our month in New Zealand.

The Dugald Stewart Monument, on Calton Hill, Edinburgh, Scotland.
Dedicated to the Scottish philosopher Dugald Stewart, a leading philosopher of his time. Stewart held the chair of Moral Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh, teaching philosophy, natural philosophy, economics, logic, and Greek for 42 years, from 1786 until his death in 1828. The monument was designed by noted architect William Henry Playfair, responsible for so much of Edinburgh's architecture. It was completed in 1831, and is a category A listed.

A cheetah mom and her three cubs rest and watch the wildebeest herd for a time before they continue the search for her missing cub, their missing sibling. The day before, the cubs numbered four, but one of them wandered off and went missing. (It was discovered dead by a Mara Triangle Conservancy ranger and sent off for a necropsy.) The mom spent a long time sniffing for her lost cub. Her loss was palpable. Sad as it was to see, the truth is that life on the plains of East Africa is harsh and infant mortality is staggeringly high -- only 5 percent of cheetahs survive to adulthood. The Dipper is a short-tailed, stout bird with a low, whirring flight. When perched on a rock, it bobs up and down and often sticks its tail up. Its white throat and breast contrasts with its dark body plumage. It's a daring hunter, walking into and under water in search of food. (RSPB).
A flashback to earlier in the year. June 2024. Where these Dippers live is always in the shade of the trees so it can be quite tricky getting a reasonable shot. Dropping the shutter speed so low (hand held) and hoping a bird that is constantly bouncing will stay still just long enough to get at least one sharp photo!
