The RMS Queen Mary is a retired ocean liner that has been converted to a floating hotel in Long Beach, CA.
It sailed the Atlantic Ocean for the Cunard Line for about 30 years starting in 1926. When the ship was first introduced, it held the record for transatlantic crossings (the Blue Riband) for about a year until it was beaten by another ship, the SS United States.
The Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth provided two-ship express service between Southampton, Cherbourg, and New York City (weekly). Queen Mary was the flagship of the Cunard Line from May 1936 until October 1946 when she was replaced in that role by Queen Elizabeth.
When the QM retired in 1967, the city of Long Beach bought her as a tourist attraction. She was on display from the early-70's (along with the Spruce Goose) until the mid-80's when Disney bought it. Unfortunately, things didn't work out for Disney and the ship was sold back to the city of Long Beach. Sadly, it actually closed for a short period of time before reopening as a hotel. Since the 90's, the ship has changed hands a number of times. Today, it's owned by Evolution Hospitality, LLC.
Some say that it is haunted, but I haven't stayed overnight on the boat so I can't comment either way!
The boat is fun to photograph, there are tons of different places to shoot it from. I shot this from the Hotel Maya with a Canon 7d and 15-85mm lens.
