On the way down to Paso Robles we stopped to visit the elephant seals in San Simeon. They are always entertaining!
I've been collecting Mopa's fallen/found whiskers in a mason jar for over five years. I've got about 40 whiskers, maybe 50 if you include the smaller eyebrow whiskers. I've never taken them out of the jar until this week, when Ryan decided it might be a good idea to let Seal try them on. Due to the quality of Seal's fur, I didn't have to use glue to attach the whiskers to his cheeks. They stay pretty well put on their own. Even though it makes me nervous knowing that Seal might lose one of the whiskers while I let him wear them for a few days longer, I have to admit that he looks quite handsome. Today I finally let Mopa in on the secret. Mopa 1) didn't know I'd been collecting her whiskers and 2) certainly didn't know I'd loaned them to Seal for the week. I'm not sure Mopa knows what to think. Either way, it was a sick day well spent. I don't have pneumonia. I just needed some rest and time with my nonhuman family.
Seal Rocks near Ocean Beach in San Francisco. A view from the path around the Cliff House Restaurant. We could hear a few seals barking but we couldn't see them. The dark specks on the rocks are cormorants.

Pacific harbor seals have spotted coats in a variety of shades from white or silver-gray to black or dark brown. They reach five to six feet (1.7-1.9 m) in length and weigh up to 300 pounds (140 kg). Males are slightly larger than females. They are true or crawling seals, having no external ear flaps. True seals have small flippers and must move on land by flopping along on their bellies. In San Francisco Bay, many harbor seals are fully or partially reddish in color. This may be caused by an accumulation of trace elements such as iron or selenium in the ocean or a change in the hair follicle.
A friend had seen my Facebook album of the other Harp Seal, and told her mother about it. Stacy called me and told me all about this seal hanging out on a private dock in Southwest. She told me to come right down and get as many shots as I wanted!

THIS IS THEIR HOME TOO.
It was not known how this ringed seal came to be found near the highway outside of Churchill, Manitoba. With polar bears in the area waiting for the bay to freeze over, this seal needed to be relocated.
All the sea lions in these photos are wild and totally free. Some may (understandably) take exception to creatures habituated to fishermens' scraps; but only the biggest and most aggressive seals usually grab the biggest and best 'left-overs'. These very active, hundreds-of-pounds pinnipeds require much more energy than scraps provide, and they rely chiefly on live fish and other ocean prey that they hunt and capture in the Pacific Ocean.
Though they're social animals that are seen all around populated shorelines, they will only breed and raise their young in areas in which they'll be mostly undisturbed by humans, et al; here in southern California it is the islands 30 miles and more offshore that provide near-perfect solitude. I've seen huge gatherings at our Islands, like Santa Barbara Island, one of our wild, beautiful Channel Islands.
They are best given plenty of leeway, as their bite is every bit as damaging (even worse) than that of a large dog. While I've scuba dived around them they have usually been inquisitive, even playful. But they can also become aggressive without much (if any) warning. They rightfully enjoy protective laws here, but some fishermen (and others) will still kill them if they threaten their catch.... or just out of cruelty.
Greencastle (Irish: An Caisleán Nua), is a commercial fishing port located in the north of the scenic Inishowen Peninsula on the north coast of County Donegal, Ireland. Nowadays, given the decline in the fishing industry, it resembles more closely a 'typical' Donegal holiday village. It is located a few miles from Moville and is about 20 miles from Derry. Greencastle's name comes from the castle in the area, which, in turn, may have derived its name from the green freestone with which it was built. The castle, originally built by the Anglo-Normans, is also known as Newburgh Castle.
Several species of seals use the Greencastle pier and the inshore islands for pupping and breeding.
