On Friday 25 June, director Arturo Dueñas will premiere his documentary film Aficionados at the Terrario at Intermediæ, as the final event in the series Cruzando los márgenes: gente de a pie que sube a los escenarios (Crossing Borders: Ordinary People on Stage).

Aficionados, 2010 (Spain). Fiction. Director: Arturo Dueñas. Running time: 115’. Spanish. Premiere.

Aficionados of life… because life is not for professional: an unusual librarian, a successful executive, an elementary school teacher, a single mother, an Italian cook, a computer programming specialist… meet weekly to cultivate their favourite hobby. Aficionados is an experimental film created collectively in which the (non-professional) actors were chosen first and they created their own characters.

Arturo Dueñas (Valladolid, 1962) holds a degree in Hispanic Philology and a diploma in film, and is an actor and film and theatre director. His training in theatre was at the Aula de Teatro at the Universidad de Valladolid and the Centro de Investigación Actoral Espacio Abierto; he studied in the Master’s Degree Scriptwriting Programme at the Universidad de Salamanca and at a filmmaking course at the New York Film Academy. He directed the short films Run, Run, Run (2007) and Pucela Square(2008).

Loredana Bianconi, Italy/Belgium

After graduating in humanities at Bologna University in 1979, Loredana Bianconi worked as a film critic, as well as in the organisation of film events and several international video festivals. Further to this she worked for RAI 3 (Italy’s state broadcaster) and became involved in scriptwriting for radio and television shows in New York. In the early 1980's she started producing her own films, in particular documentaries and videos.

La Vie Autrement (Life Differently), 2005

video, 49 min.

“Is it possible, coming from a family of North African immigrants, being a daughter or a wife, to invent one's life, to choose to abandon the universe of tradition, to break with one's family, without necessarily forsaking your roots or relatives? Four portraits of women give an account of a generation who are living their lives through their own choices. Their mothers were illiterate, but dreamed of a university education for their daughters. They invested their hopes in their children, but also their desires for what they lacked, and their solitudes. Through the exercise of creation, Amina, Farida, Hayat and Madiha have found their path to freedom. Whether it be through writing, painting, music or theatre, each of these women offers an honourable and thoroughly convincing account of a journey, situated in the narrow spaces separating two worlds, two languages, two cultures. It is a journey allowing them to evolve true to themselves; the question is having faith in what you will become.”

The foam around the eyes takes up too much space, I think. Going to trim that a bit, make it so the forehead isn't the focus of the whole thing.
