In 1979 Humphrey Spender provided information about his photograph of the novelist Christopher Isherwood as follows: 'This was taken in Berlin in about 1935. He is standing against the window of the apartment made famous in Goodbye to Berlin...looking at and commenting on some activity in the street two floors below.' It is an appropriately melancholy image, slightly narcissistic, combined with Spender's interest in precise pictorial record.

Holly will be working with Live Theatre for the first time having recently graduated from the Theatre’s Introduction to Playwriting course and Live Writer’s Group.

An honest depiction of a mother and daughter’s transit against the tide of illness. Anti-Gravity explores how legacy meanders through generations, role reversal and the place of laughter as a flotation aid. It is significantly inspired by the Rendezvous song that was written by Tim Dalling and Julia.

Holly is being mentored by writer Karin Young, a friend and long-time associate of Julia Darling, who was also writer-in-residence at Live Theatre and is now a senior scriptwriter on ITV's Emmerdale.

Born in Swansea, Thomas wrote for the South Wales Evening Post before moving to London. His poetry was admired by T.S. Eliot, Edith Sitwell and Stephen Spender. The collection Eighteen Poems (1934) established him in literary circles. Much of his writing evoked his life in Wales, including Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog (1940). Further stories and poems were published as Twenty-Five Poems (1936), The Map of Love (1939) and Deaths and Entrances (1946), including his best-known poem Fern Hill. From 1940 Thomas was a regular broadcaster and scriptwriter for the BBC. He toured America in 1950, 1952 and 1953. He completed the radio play Under Milk Wood in May 1953, shortly before his death from alcohol abuse. This engaging portrait links one of the most important twentieth-century British portrait painters with one of the most significant and notorious literary figures of the period. This portrait is one of two painted by Augustus John and is the product of a close acquaintance. The artist and sitter met in the mid-1930s at the Fitzroy Tavern in London's Charlotte Street, and furthered their friendship during many evenings there and in the nearby Marquis of Granby. John introduced Thomas to his future wife, Caitlin Macnamara. After their marriage in 1937, the Thomases met John fairly frequently whilst visiting Caitlin's mother who lived near John in Hampshire. It was in these circumstances that Dylan Thomas sat to Augustus John. John painted two portraits of Thomas (between 1937 and 1938) in his studio in Hampshire. The artist recalled 'we frequently met ... I got him to sit for me twice, the second portrait being the more successful: provided with a bottle of beer he sat very patiently.'

Jo and Friedrich never argue in the novel and Jo herself is the first one who condemns sensationalism and wants to improve, so why do so many scriptwriters show Jo as someone who can´t take criticism. Also discussing Louisa´s discomforts with the sensational newspaper she was working with and Jo´s development as an author and Louisa´s real life mentor figures. Enjoy!

Ian Gammidge was probably best known as a staff scriptwriter for cartoon strips on the Daily and Sunday Mirror for more than 30 years, notably producing storylines for "The Flutters", "The Larks", "Ruggles", "Mr Digwell" and a revival of Norman Pett's celebrated creation "Jane". In the late 1970s he succeeded Brian Cooke as the writer of "The Larks" ( drawn by Jack Dunkley ) - a family strip featuring Sam and Sal Lark, their children Stevie and Susie and their cat So-So - until it ceased in February 1985. This Daily Mirror collection was published in 1978 .

It all started in 1994. TV scriptwriter Stefan Struik had an interview with a meditating hermit in Baarn (NL) who was complaining about gnomes who disturbed the power network in his house. A month later he ran into trolls in a Norwegian clothing store in the Dutch-Frisian village Dokkum. A year before he got surprised by the amount of one meter high garden gnomes just across the border between Germany and Poland. It all seemed to point into a new direction he would hit a few months later. In December 1994 he opened with his sister a small game and bookstore in Delft (NL), named Elf Fantasy Shop. The games were a golden opportunity. Three years later the duo could open an second store in The Hague.

In 1995 Stefan also started a new adventure with a free magazine called Elf Fantasy Magazine. In 2001 the magazine became professionalized and despite it never realised any profits it existed until 2009.

Stefan and his sister already organised lectures in the Elf Fantasy Shops about druidism, Tolkien and other fantasy related subjects. In 2001 Stefan decided to combine a few things into a totally new and unique festival concept that later would be copied many times: the Elf Fantasy fair. Starting in the historical theme parc Archeon (NL) it moved the year after to the largest castle in the Netherlands: castle de Haar. With the exception of 2004 (castle Keukenhof, Lisse) it remained in castle de Haar, Haarzuilens since then. In 2009 a second version of the Elf Fantasy Fair started 400 meters from the border with Germany in the small village Arcen in Northern Limburg. In January 2013 the name Elf Fantasy Fair™ was replaced by the name Elfia™. The spring edition of Elfia is also called the 'Light Edition', while the autumn edition is characterized as the 'dark edition'.
