This nude screenprint represents the third iteration of a design that began as a sketch at a life-drawing session at Portland's Hipbone Studio, which I later made into a sort of art-deco white ink panel, and then recently made into a screen. For this I have utilized a "dirty screen" pulling technique, in which I allowed for the traces of previous ink passes to blend with each pass, creating a rich sepia color, which when coupled with the bold geometric shapes and the line of the figure makes for a very striking image.

I'm so in love with this print that I found at the thrift store the other day. It is by Nicholas Takis (1903-1965). It looks like he is actually a fairly well known painter, his original paintings sell for a good amount of money. I'm pretty sure this is a screen print though since it is on paper and is huge (20"x26"). It is weird that the image goes right up to the edge of the paper though. When I first looked at it I thought it said "Azusa Flower Mart" and I got all excited that it was a local scene from Azusa, CA but it really looks like it is says "Azulsa Flower Mart" or "Azulea Flower Mart." If any one knows any more about the subject or the artist please let me know. Thanks.

“I call this print Smoking Gun because I find it very, striking portraying the dangers of living in Countries like Mexico where writers end up imprisoned, tortured, disappear, or are killed for speaking out. It shouts out a warning of the peril faced by anyone who dares to exercise freedom of speech, a right taken for granted by the Western World.”

Screen print without light sensitive emulsion or a darkroom - here's the tutorial. (the tutorial isn't mine, but thanks to the great generous creative soul that made it available) I've put a few quick tips to get you started in the notes.
