When a modelling career is over for a mannequin what comes next? They are sculptured and designed for both function and beauty, yet the anonymity of whoever created these gracious paragons of beauty remains a mystery. Overtly flirtatious, provocative and yet distant with a fixed gaze that never engages the viewer. One small mark, scratch or chip can render redundancy, at which point the body is often dismantled for storage or disposal and limbs are lost along the way. Chris Hoban Songwriter Composer Performer - Chris Hoban is one of the leading songwriters in the folk tradition in the South West and is enjoying a growing reputation as a solo performer and multi-instrumentalist, accompanying himself on guitar, piano accordion, mandocello or ‘cello. He has appeared in folk clubs and festivals with the West Country folk musicians Steve Knightley, Phil Beer, Miranda Sykes & Rex Preston, Jim Causley, Geoff Lakeman, Phil Henry & Hannah Martin. He regularly writes songs for the nationally renowned Devonian folk duo “Show of Hands”, has featured on a number of their albums and joined them on their recent autumn tour, “Sanctuary”, performing in the cathedrals of Britain.
He began his teaching career in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, spent a decade working in music theatre at home and overseas and has worked extensively in professional theatre and with choirs as a composer and musical director. Chasing rainbows is a delightful pastime on Dartmoor. The divine grace of a rainbow captivates the viewer with a silent mistique that can only ever last for a matter of minutes. To catch on camera the spirit of one of these radiant apparitions is always a pleasing achievement, to know that the moment is saved to be enjoyed at oneâs leisure, never to be lost.
A rainbow is a meteorological occurance caused by reflection; refraction and dispersion of light in water droplets to form a spectrum of light in the form of a multicoloured circular arc in the sky. Rainbows caused by sunlight always appear in the section of sky directly opposite the sun. Rainbows can be full circles. However, the viewer usually sees an arc formed by illuminated droplets above the ground, and centered on a line from the sun to the eye of the observer. In a primary rainbow the outer band of the arc is red and the inner band is violet. This rainbow is caused by light being refracted when entering a droplet of wate, then reflected inside on the back of the droplet and refracted again when leaving it. In a double rainbow, a second arc appears outside the primary arc. In the second arc the light is reflected twice on the inside of the droplet before leaving it. The order of colours are therefore reversed, with red on the inner band of the arc.

The Bridge of Sighs, Venice c. 1913 by Walter Henry Sweet (after John Shapland).
The eloquent delineation of this superb etching, rendered by Walter Henry Sweet (after John Shapland), in the earlier part of his career, depicts ‘The Bridge of Sighs’ in Venice. It forms the spirited ramification of a protracted history in Venetian archictecture and artistic influence, through generations of both Venetian and English architects, artists, writers and one famous lover.
As a celebration of Valentine’s Day, the first part of an historic study by Screaming Abdabs Gallery will be published on 14 February 2018, giving an insight into these individual components, interlaced with additional tales of Venetian prisoners, lovers and how the career of Walter Henry Sweet, an artist of immense potential, was cruelly thwarted by the First World War.
The architect Antonio Contino was commissioned (by the Doge between 1595 and 1614) to design and build this unique 11 meter wide bridge, to provide the much needed access across the narrow Rio di Palazzo canal which flows between the Palazzo Ducale (Doge’s Palace) and the Palazzo delle Prigioni. As both buildings housed chambers of punishment or death they needed a discreet method by which prisoners could be easily commuted between the two locations.
On 26 July 1755 Giacomo Casanova, the infamous Venetian adventurer, writer and lover was arrested on grounds of ‘an affront to religion and common decency’. He subsequently became one of the most famous inmates of the Doge’s Palace. He describes in his ‘Histoire de ma vie’ (History of My Life) of his intrepid escape through the lead roof upon which he re-entered the palace and absconded through the Porta della Carta, hoodwinking a feckless guard on the way. In reference to his love life Casanova wrote, ‘I have loved women to a frenzy’. He is reported to have seduced at least 132 women during his lifetime of 73 years.
The artists Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Tommaso Antonio Visentini, Antonio Canaletto, Joseph Mallord William Turner, John Singer Sargent, Sir Frank William Brangwyn, John Shapland all created their own impressions of the exterior.
The writer Lord Byron, wrote about the bridge in ‘Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage’ canto 4, stanza 1 (1818).
The lover’s challenge. It is rumoured that if lovers manage to kiss one another while gliding under the ‘The Bridge of Sighs’ on a gondola at sunset, to the sound of the chiming bells of St. Mark’s Square, they will be granted eternal love and happiness. The origin of this legend is unknown and the opportunity to plan this romantic scenario is difficult as the bells do not ring on every hour.

Retirement - photographer Helen Duvall: "This mannequin was sold at a farmer's auction in Devon as a job lot with a trailer and general junk. Her name, Julie, was written on her forehead. Tucked under my arm, with a camera in my hand, I took her into the woods near my home feeling rather concerned at what the neighbours might think if they were to see me. As I walked through the woodland, I came across this old council window frame buried underneath the ivy. I lifted it up, opened the window and it seemed a perfect marriage for Julie - the transition, as I imagined it, from a flashy high fashion window to the end of her modelling career."

Notwithstanding the absurdity of BREXIT this image encapsulates the uncertainties of a new leadership and cabinet, which may prove devoid of whatâs necessary to avoid a no-deal BREXIT. With the departure of Theresa May and victory for Boris Johnson, the new cabinet at the helm on this perilous BREXIT cruisade enter a continental sea of dismay and astonishment at the barmy Brits. The Man Behind the Camera. This is a rare and engaging self-portrait of Italian photographer Rossano B Maniscalchi. His infectious sense of humour is ever-present as he mockingly portrays himself in a darkened room, feeling slightly alarmed at the discovery of his alter ego in the mirror. Their fingers tentatively touch as an expression of disbelief gazes out from the man inside the reflection. One imagines that the man and his reflection have never encountered one another previously. The scene is one akin to 1960s thriller movie.

The simplicity of this spellbinding short film clearly demonstrates the silent power of one alluring woman to captivate and enrapture her audience within just ten revolving turns of her graceful body.
I'm not going to get into the details but it's fair to say my day started at 5:30 and it didn't start well.
Feeling a little better now, but I'll see how I go.
'Inside My Box' is a surreal photographic image set deep in a lush green coniferous forest. An apparition of a woman, of statuesque beauty, stands tall in the sanctuary of an impenetrable transparent tank, pierced only by a ray of sunlight that beams down between the trees to illuminate the alluring features of her profile. As she closes her eyes to absorb the rays of sunlight, she remains unobservant of the scene on the other side of her impervious glass encasement. The viewer can only surmise how this transparent box came to be placed into the depths of the forest, among carnivorous creatures that would not ordinarily be found in the same part of the world. Predacious wolves gather menacingly around the base of the tank. A pernicious python silently slithers down from above. The immediate assumption that this slippery serpent may pose a threat to the woman would be a misconception, not only for the fact that she stands within the safety of her âboxâ. Moreover, the snake is indeed sizing up the wolves and by definition would be most unlikely to attack a human, especially in the form of an apparition. Each wolf seems engrossed in its own agenda and all of them remain oblivious to their silent stalker. Again, Rossano B Maniscalchi has set a scenario upon which the viewer is left with a dilemma. Maintaining the Shield (deflecting depression) is an image that portrays the onset of depression. In the peripheral view a seemingly innocuous cumuli of tiny black particles begin to gather. They swirl and dance in the air like a noxious cloud of negatively charged electrons. Eventually the choking fringes of an acidic wave drift gently inwards. Within this murky cloud the metaphoric atoms of fear eventually reveal themselves, as they roll and settle into the mind like a fine mist. Looming blacker, they morph into particles of panic threatening to engulf all feeling, killing emotion, replacing memory with a numb abyss. No two people are the same, yet for all who experience the onset of mental darkness, it takes great bravery and training to recognise the signs of onset, to banish the cloud before it can envelop, to take control. To attempt an explanation of the unpredictability of its onset, in varied semblance, can lead others to doubt its very existence, which is devastating for the mind that is fighting this internal battle. Time, patience and determination are key to building a defensive enclosure that can filter in happiness yet block the spectre of destructive negativity and self deprecation.

'Since I Lost You' is is a powerful image, by Rossano B Maniscalchi, which captures a ubiquitous moment with direct simplicity. The viewer is faced with a glass barrier upon which tiny beads of water stand pert to form a dappled screen. From the other side, the face of a beautiful woman looks out. The viewer will never know the nature of her loss, nor the ending to her story. This study is about the moment of realisation in which this woman exchanges her recoil of thought for a desire to escape and search. She is sealed into a watertight vacuum, devoid of the soul which she has lost. The pressure of her three fingers pressed against the glass is the only small clue to her despair. She is captive in this space, yet resolute in her expression to find a way out. Her face is calm, yet the droplets of water may well symbolize the tears behind her composed demeanour. Her lustreous soft pink lips gently part to reveal pearls of a potentially devastating smile in happier times. Her soft grey wanderlust eyes remain focused in a steadfast skyward gaze at an object for which her right hand is poised to reach out, the identity of which remains a mystery to the viewer. One can only hope that she will unlock the route to her freedom and reunite with her lost soul.

They are available in a multitude of colours, styles, textures and sizes. They provide diversion and fun for some clientele alongside a vital service for victims of cancer and other illnesses that can cause a traumatic loss of hair. The heads upon which these wigs are modeled are also unsung works of sculptural beauty and elegance.

These two exceptionally fit German short-haired Pointers (GSP) were mesmerized by the moths which fluttered around the wall light in the doorway of The Sandy Park Inn, Chagford on a hot summer’s night. German pointers are a versatile and extremely agile breed of dog suitable for hunting on both land and water. They have webbed feet and are known for pursuing water fowl in rivers and lakes. This pair had long elegant muzzles which were also broad and strong, allowing them to retrieve larger game. Their deep brown eyes were particularly desirable, as their antics in the pub doorway were particularly amusing!

June is the month for foxgloves, it is also the month in which I pay homage to my most beautiful friend, who was taken at the early age of 50 years by the cruel progressive disease multiple sclerosis. Given the exceptional beauty of her personality in life, I hope that her spirit lives on in an afterlife of utopian flora in the Elysian Fields, seated among the foxgloves, which were her best-loved hue of purple. This photograph will be available from Monday 18 June 2018 as a limited edition of 10 prints at www.screamingabdabs.gallery - all proceeds from the sale of these prints will be donated to Multiple Sclerosis research charities based in the UK.

These camels were born performers, they put on a wonderful racing display at the Chagford Show last summer to the delight of their audience. They are two of 'Josep's Amazing Camels' from Warwickshire. I caught up with them back-stage after their show. Having never taken a portrait of a camel before, I soon discovered that they were totally relaxed with my camera as they clammered to pose and even photo bomb one another. The male camel on the right constantly chewed and chatted while his female companions expressed their distain so eloquently with facial expression that spoke a million words.

When a modelling career is over for a mannequin what comes next? They are sculptured and designed for both function and beauty, yet the anonymity of whoever created these gracious paragons of beauty remains a mystery. Overtly flirtatious, provocative and yet distant with a fixed gaze that never engages the viewer. One small mark, scratch or chip can render redundancy, at which point the body is often dismantled for storage or disposal and limbs are lost along the way. The vulnerability of these delicate works of art is exposed as a perfect form is dismantled and discarded.
