Foxes have been surprisingly scarce at the refuge...or maybe they just hide well when I'm around! Managed to catch this young male scratching an itch before he darted off into the tall grass.

Ranch kitty scratching her chin. Even a mundane act performed by a cat becomes a study in sculpture when captured in a photograph.

we thought maybe peach tree was dead but were holding out hope that the appearance of a few leaves meant the core tree was still alive.
a fruit tree expert recommended i do scratch test to see if it was really alive. what's the scratch test ( i didn't know either )? you scratch a bit of the bark and look for greenish hued living tissue that is the vascular cambium. dry, brittle, and brown cambium means the tree is dead.
unfortunately, i don't see any green.
any thoughts from the arborists in the audience? am i doing the scratch test correctly?
Well, here it is! The birthday boy requested strawberry cake and pink frosting with a clown theme. His mom requested low-to-no sugar and only natural food coloring/flavoring. After trying a few different recipes, I settled on the Cook's Illustrated classic white cake adapted to reduce sugar (replaced with Z-Sweet and palm sugar, left in just a little white sugar to preserve the texture) and include strawberry flavor (I used powdered Just Strawberries, which are freeze-dried strawberries with nothing else added). Frosting is strawberry swiss buttercream, sweetened with agave nectar, palm sugar, and again just a little white sugar for insurance). All the colorings I used were natural (made by India Tree, bought at Sur La Table). The clowns are fondant bodies with plastic heads that I re-painted with royal icing to match the natural colors on the cake.
It was a long and trying experience to decorate with this frosting, but in the end I'm happy with how it turned out. Here's hoping Gray has a happy birthday this year, and many more to come!!

2/28 - Month of... Jedi & I
Every night Jedi and I have a cuddle on the couch while I give him some scratches. He has atopic dermatitis which causes him to be incredibly itchy. We have just started him on immunotherapy for his allergies which means that we had to stop his short course of corticosteroids so now he is itching all the time again.
It's heartbreaking to see him so itchy and obviously very distressing for him as well. You can see that most of his hair is missing from his chest (he should have a thick mane there) and earlier today he managed to rip all his hair out from under his left shoulder causing himself to bleed. I just hope this immunotherapy works.
