I was pretty darn happy with how this cake came out. Recipe from #bakefromscratch.

INGREDIENTS:

1 cup sugar

1 cup butter or margarine, softened

3 tablespoons milk

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 egg

3 cups all-purpose flour

1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon red food color

Sugar, if desired

DIRECTIONS:

1. In large bowl, beat 1 cup sugar, the butter, milk, vanilla and egg with electric mixer on medium speed until well blended, scraping bowl occasionally. On low speed, beat in flour, baking powder and salt until well mixed, scraping bowl occasionally.

2. Divide dough in half. To one half of dough, stir or knead in red food color until desired pink color. Cover with plastic wrap; refrigerate at least 1 hour for easier handling.

3. Heat oven to 400°F. Work with 1/3 of white dough at a time; keep remaining dough refrigerated. On lightly floured work surface, roll out white dough with rolling pin to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut with floured 2 1/2-inch heart-shaped canapé or cookie cutter; place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Repeat with 1/3 of pink dough, keeping remaining pink dough refrigerated.

4. Using floured 1-inch heart-shaped canapé or cookie cutter, cut center from each pink and white cookie. Remove centers; replace each center of cookie with cutout of opposite colored dough. Sprinkle with sugar.

5. Bake 5 to 9 minutes or until edges are light golden brown. Cool 1 minute; remove from cookie sheets.

**For a sweet finish, use purchased decorating icing to pipe the initials of your favorite valentines on individual cookies. Let the kids cut dough into shapes for any season or holiday - stars, eggs or flowers - with a corresponding small shape cut in the center of each.

30 DAys of Gratitude-day 7. I'm grateful for the bread and other goodies that I get to eat. I'm grateful that Scratch is not too far from where I live. Not pictured here are the bagels which are probably the best ever anywhere and disappear as soon as they come out of the kitchen. They are light and airy and not heavy like regular bagels but boy are they so good. Among my other favorites-Anadama Bread, Almond Horseshoe, macarrons and oh yes, I cannot forget the oatmeal cookie which is Mike's favorite. He gets one every week (at least one) and he will share, but if the granddaughters are with us, he'll get them their own cookies. Charlotte likes the chocolate and Isabel likes the chocolate chip. I'm not sure about Margot though.

it was my first time making this!

it was for my mother's 60th birthday and just happens to be her favorite recipe for german chocolate cake with coconut-pecan frosting, both made from scratch, right off the back of the baker's german chocolate bar package. i needed to put way more frosting inbetween the layers.

that frosting was just ridiculous. as in good.

because then you get a free pie (banana pudding tart in this case) in exchange for bags of brussel sprouts and broccoli.

and that is the most amazing meringue EVER. smooth, sweet, creamy, and not at like all tasteless spongy bits that never dissolve or the hard bland crunch of pavlova.

Scratch Peanut Butter Brownies with Fudge and Reeses Pieces on top. Surprisingly chewy and delicious. I had to test 3 of them before taking them to the post office to mail. Oopseys! 😈

Yes, we had one VERY excited little man this day... his two favourite 'people' brought to life for HIS 2nd b-day...

Growing up in the Mid-Atlantic, I probably had biscuits here and there but nothing compares to a southern buttermilk biscuit! Before heading to my next work event, I had to swing by @scratchbaking to get a biscuit sandwich! I love to cook and bake but have never mastered the art of biscuits so I am thankful for places like @scratchbaking . I also could not leave without grabbing a chocolate donut muffin! #scratch #fuelingup #durham photo by @janelly501 / on Instagram instagram.com/p/-MPWXEjh9F/
