Last October my husband and I were excited to scrape enough together to spend a few days on the north shore of Minnesota! This was our first real, non work related vacation in years so we were excited even though we traveled simply. The first day, we got to know Duluth and how beautiful it is and how wonderful the food is. We especially loved touring Glensheen mansion. Duluth really stole our hearts. However, the north shore captured our souls!
We spent two days hiking and driving around the north shore along Lake Superior. And we had a blast. Our first stop was Two Harbors. We loved the town, especially Cedar Coffee Co, but couldn't wait to get out to Agate Bay to see the Two Harbors light! We spent at least an hour there walking out to the lighthouse and enjoying the beautiful nature. It was magical! We also loved seeing the giant iron ore docks and the ship loading up. Fascinating! I really hope to go back soon.
Fleet Week in PDX brings all kind of new "elements" to Waterfront Park. Perhaps the most aesthetic of these elements are the weathered hulls of the Coast Guard cruisers that bump up against the bank of the Willamette River.

This wall in my parents' garage in Paradise, California is especially poignant to me. My mother grew up during the Great Depression and was incredibly frugal. She would not throw anything away unless it was absolutely necessary, including paintbrushes that are obviously well past their prime. Some of these brushes were never cleaned after use and are hard as nails. (Undoubtedly, my Dad used them last because my Mom would not have left them uncleaned.) Still, she hung them back up, figuring that one day she'd clean them, but she never did. She's gone but they are still hanging on. The dustpan also reminds me of Mom - she had that one since I was a little kid. I am grateful for these little remnants that have been left in the garage. I hope my Dad doesn't decide to "clean it out" one of these days.
We used a pretty cool Booklet that came with tools and some patterns. Made the creative work much easier!
