This is a shoe scraper which was usually found in front of private houses and public buildings so that anyone going in would be able to clean his shoes and thus will not dirty the house. One has to remember that up to some decades ago the roads were not asphalted and any one walking in winter would result in having muddy shoes. Today, this is not necessary as people would have relatively clean shoes if they had not walked through country lanes on a rainy day.

This road===really an unlimited access highway through some new and many more planned suburban developments is a 4 lane divided with shoulders---has been the source of misery for us for 2 months. When we bought the house a year ago we asked about the develpment of the road since out develop section was the last exit before the barriers. We were told "it's a long way off in the future". 10 months later came the D6-Cats, scrapers knocking down several acres of trees. We are aging tree huggers from 40 years back and that was painful to watch, that was over in 2-3 days as those D6's can push around mature 40' trees (tiny by Pacific Northwest standards but as big as the get in this part of Texas) like they are moving scrub brush. That was noisly enough, but then came 200 loads of rock for fill at a low place around a creek (that's why the trees were so big). The trucks that carries the rock probably weighed 50,000 tons plus the weight of the rock. They shook the house all day 630a to 630p 5-6 days a week. Even when we isolated in our bedroom which effective blocking the noise, thelow frequency vibrations could be felt in your bones like those bass notes at a concert that are well under 20HZ. My wife has always been sensitive to this frequency vibration and she became a nervous wreck, and had to leave the house as much as she could during the daytime on weekdays.but Friday they stopped. Monday they took away all the big rollers and other finishing machines. I looked in the middle fo the night and it looks ready to pave. The surface is smooth and packed down and baked until is is already like cement. I did learn by watching the the big trucks come and go how much water is needed to make a proper road, each layer is watered down so when they roll it the compression is better. working principle of Scraper Conveyor:
The working principle of the scraper conveyor is that the open chute is used as a bearing member for coal, vermiculite, or materials, and the scraper is fixed on the chain (composed of a scraper chain) as a traction member. When the head drive section is started, the sprocket on the motive head shaft rotates, causing the scraper chain to cycle and move the animal material along the chute until the head of the machine is unloaded. The scraper chain bypasses the sprocket for strapless, closed-loop operation to complete the material transfer.
Scraper conveyor advantages:
A solid structure. Can withstand the impact of coal, vermiculite or other materials, impact, collision, pressure, pressure and other external forces.

Found the scraper on the left in about 6" of water then I found the other (on the right) a little while later in about 1' of water...I thought I had an Arrowhead but it's a Geo-fact or as I call it a FAKE-ME-OUT! :-(
Although it does seem tapered & is thin on the edges & thick in the middle, but the stone is wrong.
