A cropped shot of a couple young whitetail bucks butting heads, slipping and sliding in the snow. The buck on the left only had 1 spike, the other antler had fallen off. And yet he was the most aggressive. A treat to watch them.

Have a wonderful weekend!

This is one of my favourite places to photograph. Tanfield Railway is home to the worlds oldest working train shed. This photo was taken in the train graveyard where the sun was just edging over the tops of the carriages.

Usually, these guys carry baskets of fish from the ships to the market. But anything of value will be transported.

NJ Transit Comet III 5005 meets the claw in Neptune Yard while in the process of being scrapped. An interesting sight to see for sure.

Scrap lead fetches in the UK about £ 1500 per ton (zinc even more). Scrap metal can be stored almost infinitely. You can't do that with the millions of benefit claimants in the UK. The poor might also not wish to sit still when treated like scrap.

A CSX local crew is shoving back onto a spur for a local scrap yard in October 2006. This was one of the first trains I shot after moving to Columbia. I always enjoyed shooting this local and had fairly good luck with it. Meanwhile, CSXT 6441 is an EMD GP40-2 built for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad in 1981.

While EMD's SD40-2 series locomotives seem to have everlasting service lives, many of the newer models do not.

UP 4236, photographed by Jeff Carlson on July 9, 2026, was scrapped at Neff Yard in Kansas City, MO. He also mentioned on Flickr that UP 4777, 4047, 4056, and 4647 were also among the scrap victims.

A Northshore Mining train is shown crossing Highway 61 at Silver Bay with material that could not be salvaged and made into pellets or sinter feed and is being moved to the Milepost 7 disposal site. This move, called the scrap train, runs infrequently so we were lucky to catch it.

Couldn’t finish it, needed to get to other projects. But it looks somewhat nice

Yesterday I posted a photo of Union Pacific SD70M 4236, which had recently been parted out at Neff Yard in Kansas City. The list of 70Ms scrapped also includes UP 4777, 4047, 4056, and 4647.

A quick search of my photo archive revealed I had captured UP 4056 leading a Global 1, Illinois to City of Industry, California intermodal train in Salt Lake City, Utah on November 5, 2017. The 4056 even had a rare repaint, complete with the big flag logo.

The train included one of Union Pacific's 50 ArroWedge containers, designed to reduce wind drag and conserve fuel. All 50 would be removed from service during Precision Scheduled Railroading, and be stored and stashed away at (you guessed it) Global 1 in Chicago.

See fastened on a low-loader this old "Seddon" truck dating from the 70s sadly awaits its fate.Seen at a Trucking event in Hull earlier this Year.

After a long wait, the 1600 Hamilton Yard job pauses long enough for a quick shot of the GP9 set. It was a windy night that night, as evident by the clouds emitting from the stacks of Columbian Chemicals in the background (which I believe are adorning the red and green lighting to celebrate the coming holiday season).

Strathearne Yard is quite the hot spot for scrap steel in Hamilton, with an estimated 33,000 tons of steel (based on around 300 cars coming and going) coming and going through this yard to American Iron & Metal and Triple M Metals, on both CN and CP.
