Production of the 3-wheeled Mechanical Horse commenced in 1934. The design had been refined in 1933 by Oliver Danson North, who modified the original prototype. This featured automatic trailer coupling (Relatives believe the automatic coupling which remains virtually unchanged today was actually designed by Alistair Moncreiff of Scamell but he received no recognition for his work) the single front wheel could be steered through 360 degrees. This was a very simple and sturdy vehicle which was constructed on a steel channel frame and fitted with a wooden cab, the early versions having canvas doors. The Mechanical Horse came in two sizes, capable of pulling loads of three tons and six tons, each of the two sizes had a corresponding coupling size, which became known as the 3-ton and the 6-ton coupling. The tractor units were powered by Scammell's own side valve petrol engine of 1125cc in the 3 ton version and 2043cc in the larger 6 tonner. The engine was offset to the left of the cab, which could cause stability problems in some circumstances. The vehicles had manoeuvrability which was unmatched; it was possible to turn through 360 degrees in under 20 feet with a 16-foot trailer. The road speed of about 20 mph suited the vehicle to local deliveries, and fuel consumption of 10 to 20 mpg was acceptable. Railway companies were the primary customers for the Mechanical Horse, but they were also used by a number of private companies, particularly breweries, who valued the nimble little lorries. The British armed forces used them in stores and on aircraft carriers. The 6-ton coupling equipment was also fitted to popular makes of lorry such as Bedford, Thornycroft and Austin. Bedford tractor units so equipped were sold under the Bedford-Scammell brand. Such was the popularity and success of the Mechanical Horse that there was a separate sales department using dealers for this unique machine. During the difficult trading years of the 1930s the threewheeler was the saviour of Scammell Lorries Ltd.

The western scrub jay (Aphelocoma californica), is a species of scrub jay native to western North America. It ranges from southern Washington to central Texas and central Mexico. It comprises three distinct subspecies groups, all of which may be separate species. They are California scrub jay (coastal), Woodhouse's scrub jay (interior US and northern Mexico), and Sumichrast's scrub jay (interior southern Mexico). The western scrub jay was once lumped with the island scrub jay and the Florida scrub jay; the taxon was then called, simply, the scrub jay. The western scrub jay is nonmigratory and can be found in urban areas, where it can become tame and will come to bird feeders. While many refer to scrub jays as "blue jays", the blue jay is a different species of bird entirely. In recent years, the California scrub jay has expanded its range north into the Puget Sound region of Washington.

Hi,polymer clay friends!

I want to share with you some of my experience with cane technique.Must to admit that it wasn`t my favorite one :-) I admire what other artists create with it but somehow I can`t felt it like "my technique".Than I participated in the course on Voila! and Christine Dumont. There we were asked to look at a new way on the cane technique. But I made something inadequate and don`t like it.After it thought I should find a way to become friend with cane.First decided to use my benefits-softness of my polymer clay,my love to modeling and my favorite technique-mokume gane.To make cane more comfortable for me.So I came up with the idea for Dripping cane. Some of my first Dripping cane works you can see here

www.flickr.com/photos/vokade/sets/72157633237868770/with/...

Now I`ll share my basic way to Dripping cane creating.Which I think can be develop in many different ways.

1.Take a pieces of colored polymer clay scrub. Will be good if it`s a bit softer like Fimo soft to be able to modeled.

2.Put the scrab 3-4 times through the pasta machine.

3.Cut this long layer in half.

4.Than again halved. The idea of this way of working I got from Donna Kato and her "starry night" cane.

5.Thus obtained block cut to the same size parts.

6.Put the pieces on top of each other and wrap them with a layer of bright color clay.

7.Now comes the first important step-contrary to the familiar practice and begin to shape the cane.Do it boldly without fear that it will spoil the pattern :-).For this sample I make not so complicated design. Then put the clay for few minutes in the freezer.

8.After it put the shape on a piece of glass that must be at rest on a workplace.

9.The second important step-after the clay is well stuck to the glass start to making mokume gane cuts.Cut not too deep.

10.Yes, the result is pretty rough :-) But later we`ll fix it.Now we turn to the other side of the shape and also cut to level the surface.

11.Processing the front of the necklace-put on the top a piece of smooth plastic and press with piece of glass. So the surface become flat and with less defects.

12.Baking,polishing,varnishing the necklace. Now the surface is smooth and the pattern is clear. But the most interesting is that the shape was made with just one cane.

I hope Dripping cane will inspired you to create :-)!

My coworker made this board for a Halloween costume. Now it sits in the office so we can play...I mean work, and play.
