Marischal College (/ˈmɑːrʃl/ MAR-shəl) is a large granite building on Broad Street in the centre of Aberdeen in north-east Scotland, and since 2011 has acted as the headquarters of Aberdeen City Council. However, the building was constructed for and is on long-term lease from the University of Aberdeen, which still uses parts of the building to store its museum collections. Today, it provides corporate office space and public access to council services, adjacent to the Town House, the city's historic seat of local government. Many Aberdonians consider Marischal College to be an icon of the "Granite City" and to symbolise the zenith of Aberdeen's granite-working industry.

The construction of the modern college building began in 1835, following the demolition of previous buildings on the site, and was completed in its present form in the early 1900s. It is the second largest granite building in the world. Formerly the seat of the Marischal College and University of Aberdeen founded in 1593, the building was retained by the unified University of Aberdeen, which was created in 1860 by the merger of Marischal College and King's College. The buildings of Marischal College continued to be used for academic purposes until the mid-20th century and less and less until the early 2000s. During this period they were frequently rebuilt and expanded upon.

Round Tower

Immediately adjoining the cathedral to the southwest stands the Round Tower, built about 1000 A.D. It is 86 ft.(26.21 m) high, has at the base a circumference of 50 ft.(15.3 m) and a diameter of 16 ft.(4.9 m), and is capped with a hexagonal spire of 18 ft.(5.5 m), added in the 14th century. This type of structure is somewhat common in Ireland, but the only Scottish examples are those at Brechin and Abernethy in Perthshire.

The quality of the masonry is superior to all but a very few of the Irish examples. The narrow single doorway, raised some feet above ground level in a manner common in these buildings, is also exceptionally fine. The door-surround is enriched with two bands of pellets, and the monolithic arch has a well-preserved representation of the Crucifixion. The slightly splayed sides of the doorway (also monolithic) have relief sculptures of ecclesiastics, one of them holding a crosier, the other a Tau-shaped staff.

Golden light surrounds the Edinburgh Castle.

Edinburgh Castle is a fortress which dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland, from its position atop the volcanic Castle Rock. Human habitation of the site is dated back as far as the 9th century BC. There has been a royal castle here since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century, and the site continued to be a royal residence until the Union of the Crowns in 1603

The golden lamps of The Railway Inn flicker to life as dusk settles over Lower Largo — a coastal village steeped in maritime legend and literary charm. Once a bustling fishing port, the village is best known as the birthplace of Alexander Selkirk, the real-life castaway who inspired Robinson Crusoe.

Perched at the edge of Station Wynd, the inn sits near the route of the old East Fife railway line, whose legacy still lingers in the nearby viaduct. A quiet pint here feels like a toast to the ghosts of sailors, smugglers, and station masters alike.

The Anderston Centre, Glasgow, a deeply unlovely place, even as it was being built, passing it in 1969 I remember thinking how ugly it was and the years haven’t helped - although, astonishingly, the good readers of an architecture magazine, Prospect voted it in at number 54 in the best 100 modern Scottish buildings. #anderson #andersonglasgow #glasgowarchitecture #scottisharchitecture #brutalist #brutalism #brutal_architecture #brutalistarchitecture #architecture #glasgow #glasgowcity #glasgowcitycentre #geometric #patterns #glasgowblackandwhitephotography #blackandwhitephotography #monochromatic #monochrome
