Marshmallows or Scorpion, What do you see in the clouds?

My FaceBook Page

Scott's View, which is reputed to be one of the favourite views of Sir Walter Scott. It's hands down the best viewpoint in the Scottish Borders. Be sure to visit at sunrise or sunset for maximum awe.

Across the centuries, Neidpath has been home to generations of the Fraser, Hay, and Douglas families. And for over 200 years, the estate has been privately owned by the Wemyss family. The true beauty of Neidpath is that very little has changed over the years. The rugged stone walls, hidden staircases, and beautiful views from the battlements would all be very familiar to its formers residents. Outside, the ancestral emblems are clear to see in the archways and carvings around the castle. Inside, the burnished wooden floors bear the indents from the spurs of the gentlemen’s boots. I went back to redo this. Arrived exactly same spot before the sunrise. But the weather was not cooperating. The clouds were all stacked together, and it was still snowing on the mountain. For the moment I was about to give up. The sun came out on my back, clouds all cleared up, and the moon came out. I quickly snapped the photo below. Just in another 30 mins, the weather went back to it was and started snowing heavily. I quickly descended the mountain.

Megget Reservoir is an impounding reservoir in the Megget valley in Ettrick Forest, in the Scottish Borders. The 259 hectares (640 acres) reservoir is held back by the largest earth dam in Scotland. The reservoir collects water from the Tweedsmuir Hills, which is then conveyed 28 miles (45 km) via underground pipelines and tunnels to Edinburgh. The pipelines are routed through the Manor Valley and the Meldon Hills, to Gladhouse Reservoir and Glencorse Reservoir in the Pentland Hills. These two reservoirs store the water until such times as it is required. Excess water which overflows from the reservoir is returned to the Megget Water, and hence into St. Mary's Loch. [Wikipedia]

Caerlaverock Castle is a picturesque ruinous old medieval stronghold, set in Dumfries and long-held by the powerful Maxwells for hundred of years until finally besieged and slighted in 1640.

A classic scene from the lochs that I couldn't resist.

One of the tens of thousands of Lagangarbh Hut pictures on Flickr stream.

I still can't get enough of this old house. Hazy and slightly misty morning over the castle before the light beams through the clouds.

Drove to Glencoe for catching the sunrise on Monday. No crazy hikings, just some honeypot locations photography. From the glorious sunny morning to a dark gloomy overcast sky in just minutes. The ever and fast-changing weather added a mystical touch for the Glencoe.

Despite its modest height, Cademuir Hill does command a splendid view over Peebles and Glentress Forest. I like it the best on a misty morning or in the low light of early evening.

The Tweed Bridge is a stone-built road bridge of five spans over the River Tweed in Peebles, in the Scottish Borders.

A view from Megget Reservoir towards St. Marys Loch. The pipelines from Megget Reservoir are routed through the Manor Valley and the Meldon Hills, to Gladhouse Reservoir and Glencorse Reservoir in the Pentland Hills. The outflow from the reservoir is the Megget Water, which flows into St. Mary's Loch.

Pettico Wick Bay is part of the St Abbs Head national nature reserve. The Jetty was built in the bay so supplies could be landed for the lighthouse.

Hay Lodge Park, one of Peebles’ greatest assets, It is the jewel in the crown of a town not exactly short of green space. It's sitting on the west side of Peebles and is the largest park in the town. Open parkland slopes down to the River Tweed, with many mature trees and a network of paths.

I saw this rusted old oil barrel when I was walking the Soonhope Burn* and Venlaw circle in Peebles. Never expect it will be here.

*The Soonhope Burn is a tributary of the River Tweed, which runs north to south from moorland into Peebles to the east of the main town centre.

It's time for me to get this classic shot everyone takes in the bag.

St Mary's Loch - Morning Begins

Saturday morning and another trip to St Mary's Loch, a few miles north of Moffat, hoping the weather forecast was correct. A cold and sunny day with a good helping of mist was the forecast and approaching the Loch, it seemed they were right on this occasion. A cloud inversion over the loch was forming just as the reflected sunrise was starting. I chose the frozen jetty as it always gives a good view down the loch, and went for an angled view to include the wee boat and the line of trees where the loch narrows in front of the approaching mist.

As you can imagine the mist eventually enveloped the situation leading to a good view images made from the morning out.

An absolutely breathtaking place to go for a stroll and enjoy the snowy winter scenery.

Winter Wonderland

Yesterday was my first chance to get out and experience some of the heavy snow that has fallen over the past week over most of Scotland. This is from near the village of Leadhills in South Lanarkshire and a beautiful snow drift with its amazing lines, complimented by the sky and the little lone tree to complete the image.

I have to say that this could possibly be my favourite image that I have made in a very long while.

Distant Blaven

This is a shot taken just before sunset from Ord looking over towards Blaven. I had set up my shot and was waiting for the sun to go down but coming over from Elgol way was a little rain storm which helped diffuse the bright sunlight and give some great conditions. Please Enjoy:)

A Wintery Morning

A cold drive around and up over Talla Reservoir to see what the conditions were like, no cars so the roads were a bit wintery:) this is a view from above the reservoir looking at Talla Water which flows down into the reservoir. I really liked the dusting of snow on the foreground rocks and just the little bit of colour in the sky.

Light On A Winters Morning

A drive up into the Scottish Borders and my regular haunt of St Mary's Loch, a place which has produced quite a few images of late.

This is from high up above the small Loch next to St Mary's, called Loch Of The Lowes. This hillside has a few nice trees which give views either way, to this Loch or indeed down to St Mary's Loch.

Please feel free to comment should you wish:)

Glen Cannich - The Little Ones

We have spent the last 3 days around the Glen Cannich & Glen Affric staying at Kerrow House which made for an ideal base to explore the nearby glens.

This first image is from Glen Cannich and one that doesn't need much explanation really. It was shot using the 70-200mm just at the right time as it was raining with mist drifting through the trees, the sun came out.

The colours in the glen are something to behold at this time of the year, simply gorgeous.
