On March 5, 2024, three students from Fayette-Ware Comprehensive High School joined their peers from across Tennessee at Belmont University in Nashville for the Tennessee School Boards Association (TSBA) Student Congress on Policies in Education (SCOPE). This event, now in its 41st year, brought together over 260 high school students to engage in discussions about public education in the state.

At the event, students assumed various roles, including school board members, officials, parents, and concerned citizens, in mock school board sessions led by actual school board members and superintendents. Following these sessions, students selected speakers to represent their small groups in full-scale debates on current education issues.

The debates covered topics such as the inclusion of internships as a graduation requirement (47% in favor, 53% against), the use of Artificial Intelligence for homework completion (50% in favor, 50% against), implementing a four-day school week (23% in favor, 77% against), and prohibiting student cell phone use during school hours (35% in favor, 65% against).

Additionally, the SCOPE delegates elected officers for 2025, including Kate Carter from Science Hill High School as President, Josalyn Harris from Morristown East High School as 1st Vice President, and Drew Carver from Maryville High School as 2nd Vice President.

The Tennessee School Boards Association, founded in 1939, serves as a unified voice for local public school boards in the state. Recognized by the State Legislature in 1953, TSBA advocates for the interests of Tennessee's public school students and districts, offering training and assistance to the state's 991 board of education members.
