Boot Camp corner in Prospect Park.

My friend tells me I need to hang from a monkey bar every day to stay in alignment for the sciatica. Ugh. I can barely hang for two seconds.

These guys were nice.

Meanwhile the birds by my building are super excited about the weather -- flying in circles and chirping up a storm!

Brad and I officially entered the "Boring Uncool Olds" tier this past Friday, when we went to the Billy Joel concert.

Heavens, why are all those people standing - can't we enjoy the music sitting down? Why is it so loud in here? Do those people have to shout like animals? My sciatica is acting up. Where's my Sanka?!?

(Billy Joel was awesome, by the way.)

Friday is the day Jools does Yoga, goes swimming and does other chores first thing, while I put the bins out and drink coffee.

Only now I don't have to go to work at seven now, of course.

So, I messed around online, then sat on the patio having filled the feeders up, while Mulder and Scully laid with me until the sun got to warm for them, so they found a large plant to sleep under.

I had a touch of sciatica, but hoped that going out for a stomp to Bonsai Bank would help.

Readers, it didn't.

Anyway, once Jools returned at half nine, and we had a coffee together, I left for the orchid fields. Woods.

A fine day to be out, and traffic was light, out along the A2, then through Bridge, Petham before arriving in Denge Wood.

From Pennypot Lane its about a mile walk through the woods to Bonsai, mostly downhill on the way out, which made for a pleasant walk through the dappled sunlight. Before tackling the final slope up the bank.

You know you have arrived as there were a dozen Lady Orchids either side of the track, usually there is one or two.

Then into the reserve, and while laying down to snap a Lady Orchid, a Duke of Burgundy butterfly landed in snapping range, so I snapped it. So, in five minutes of arriving I had the shot I wanted.

But then there are the Lady Orchids.

Hundreds of Lady Orchids.

The best year there for over a decade I think.

I took lots of shots. Of course.

I walked to the far end of the site, then down and back to the start again. Lady, Early Purple, Fly, White Helleborine, Greater Butterfly all in flower, and Common Spotted close.

Orchid heaven.

And then the long walk back to the car. And did my back and legs complain. Yes, yes they did.

There's not much of a slope up from Bonsai, but I felt it yesterday, I had no choice but to keep going, and made it, of course.

Phew.

I stopped off at the Black Robin for a beer and crisps before going to Covet again to check for the Birds-nest Orchids I know were there as they'd been found.

The beer was good, then the short drive to the parking space, then a stomp in the woods.

They're by the tree with the sapling was the directions given.

I found no BNO, but I did refind the pure white Lady again. Only just beginning to open and looking like a Ghost (but not a Ghost Orchid).

My back was shot, so I walked back to the car, then drove home via Tesco where I bought some bread for dinner and ice cream.

Hazelnut Magnums.

Double Hazelnut Magnums.

Then back home.

We had a Magnum sitting on the patio.

Still better than working.

Supper was Caprese with real aged Balsamic which I had bought in Italy last year, but not best suited for Caprese, as the oil diluted it too much.

Then there was the comedy football evening as Spurs and Man Utd battled to be the 16th and 17th best team in the Prem.

Both lost.

Very funny.

Well blow me down... (as Popeye used to say)

I found this new Acmon Blue (Plebejus acmon) butterfly working the new staminate flowers of native Coyote Bush (Baccharis pilularis) in the Asteraceae plant family. You can see from the exposed bit of its upper wing why they are called Blues. I haven't seen one of these butterflies since July 19. (San Marcos Pass, 11 September 2013)

I'm still dealing with sciatica-type back and leg pains, but it is (very slowly) getting better. I have been getting out every day - hobbling with cane and tripod, but getting out.

Some weekends we do lots of shit, other we don't. This was one of the latter ones, where apart from shopping and cooking, not much else was done.

Jools has done something to her heel, so is nursing that back to health, and I have a touch of sciatica, something I have not had for a while, but is limiting what I feel I want to do.

That and the fact I am away all next week meant it was a homey weekend, with lots of cooking.

We went to Tesco at half seven, not needing that much it seemed, and yet spending £97. Some stuff for the fresh batch of Boston beans I was going too cook later in the morning.

Back home we had fruit for breakfast. The last of the strawberries from the UK I think, and after washing up I get down for some bean action.

Pork belly, chorizo, onions were all browned and put into a pot, add two tins of tomatoes, four cans of haricot beans, some black treacle and finally some smoked paprika. Stir, bring to the boil then put into a moderate oven for three hours with the lid on, and a further hour with the lid off.

Then make bacon and sausage butties along with huge brews. And it was after midday, and with it being international break, a mix of lower league footy and semi-competitive internationals for the rest of the day.

In the afternoon I made a patch of pizza dough, let that rest then using the little cutter make some shapes, dust with semolina flour and leave to rest. I had defrosted some ragu, so warmed that up, boiled a pan of water then cooked the pasta for four minutes, mix with the ragu and some pasta water in a warm frying pan.

Add some grated pecorino and fresh ground pepper.

And eat.

With a bottle of decent wine.

Perfect.

The evening dragged, with me watching Spain v Denmark, but it seems there is a thing called too much football and went to bed to read before half time.

Ended up in the ER today as I'd had severe leg pain for 24 hours. It came out of the blue, and didn't feel muscular. Diagnosis was sciatica from my back issue (spondylolithesis) brought on by the travelling and road vibration. Given strong painkillers and muscle relaxants, told to rest for a few days and give up the travelling. Umm, we'll see about the last part. Going to have to see what I can do to prevent that happening.

The body pain radiates down the back of the thigh, leg, and foot. Sciatica treatment options can include acupuncture, physical therapy, and massage therapy. Concern the perfect chiropractic doctors to get the back happy life.

Research On The Outcomes Of Essential Oils On Neuropathy

There's actually been a few research specifically into the aftereffects of essential oils for sciatica. These studies have revealed that peppermint, lavender, Roman chamomile, and frankincense are especially effective. The nerves in some body with neuropathy are damaged, and that is why the condition is therefore painful. Luckily, when the nerves have been damaged rather than destroyed, they are able to regenerate even though this frequently takes a long time. What essential oils can do, based on studies, would be make this process shorter. A beautiful, sunny day today, Saturday 27 April 2024. Just looked at the weather forecast for the next few days and found that after tomorrow, the next five out of six days are forecast to have snow/rain.

Yesterday, 26 April, I managed a short drive SE of Calgary. Thought I had better make the most of clear roads before the bad weather arrives. All familiar, much-travelled roads this time, around the Frank Lake area and while heading back home.

I bumped into a huge group of people who were on a special outing to Frank Lake, led by Greg Wagner, who takes care of the lake areas and does a tremendous job of recording every bird seen, all year round and for many years. Not just once a day, either! Yesterday, he was showing the participants the various viewing points around the lake and I happened to see the cars coming towards me along one of the roads. I turned around and caught up with them. They had just one more location to visit, but one had to drive on a rough, non-road to get there. I would have been almost the last person to get there if I had gone, with a long walk to get to the lake edge. I knew I couldn't do that, with painful sciatica or bursitis in my right side, so I continued on my own journey. Good to see you, Greg, even if for just a few moments.

A bit of information about Greg:

ebird.org/region/CA/post/greg-wagner-march-ebirder-of-the...

So many birds in the area are far, far away - and I still don't possess a pair of binoculars after about 18 years of birding! (By the way, the birding blind area at Frank Lake is still extremely flooded.) However, I was happy to spend a bit of time watching and taking a few photos of the closer birds on my way home. Mainly Yellow-headed and Red-winged Blackbirds, plus a few Coots and European Starlings. At one point, there was an absolute frenzy of a group of Starlings and both species of Blackbirds on the ground, all mixed together. I had to take a bit of video, through the windscreen so poor quality.

Its been 4 weeks since i injured my back and tonight's the first time that i've been able to do any kind of exercise. A short 2km jog along the sea front for starters as i'm still getting sciatica down my right leg from the injury.....what will i feel like tomorrow morning? .........i'll keep you posted :-)

It's from too much doing of "The Bump"
