Gua Sha is a form of dermabrasion using a hand-held scraper to irritate and inflame various regions of the JingLuo's dermal areas. It is frequently used to treat invasion by seasonal external pathogens.
It is an ancient Chinese medical treatment where they use bone plates and rub against the skin to create heat and open up the pores therefore releases all the waste or toxins in your body. Most people do this when they have a fever, stomachache, digestive problems, muscle injury, and stress. The red marks looks bad, but it actually shows more toxin. It doesn't hurt at all. It's better than meds because its all natural.
Using a traditional specialized tool such as a Gua Sha Board, Gua Sha Slide or other Gua Sha tools, the massage therapist or acupuncturist will gently scrape or rub the skin over a problem area as a deep massage, using a downward direction. A gentle scraping of the skin surface using a GuaSha tool to increase circulation of Qi and blood. It release muscle tension, tightness and constriction. The patient experiences immediate relief from pain, stiffness, fever, chills, coughs, nausea, and so on. Gua Sha is valuable in the prevention and treatment of acute infectious illness, upper respiratory and digestive problems, and many other acute or chronic disorders.
Scrape Governing Vessel (Dou Mai) as it controls all Yang meridians to release cold and wind, soothes away pain.
The purpose of Gua Sha is to raise the "rash" or red petechiae through the firm but not violent friction of the tool against the body. Chi or Qi (pronounced “chee”) is the constant and vigorous movement of energy or life force that keeps us healthy and alive. Balancing the Chi, in Traditional Chinese Medicine, promotes blood circulation and the removal of toxic heat, stagnant blood and lymph fluid from the body.

www.aquaticsphysicaltherapy.com - (941) 924-9525 Non-surgical spinal decompression treatment is beneficial to almost anyone with back, neck, arm, and/or leg pain. Spinal decompression is safe and non-invasive. We use our heated pool as part of our therapy protocol to provide aquatic decompression to the lumbar spine and to recondition the trunk and lower extremities. Decompression is highly controlled traction and we can focus the traction stress on the disc that is most likely the cause of the symptoms. Non-surgical spinal decompression can be used to relieve peripheral radiation/sciatica and pain associated with: protruding discs, bulging discs, herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, posterior facet syndrome, acute facet problems, radicular pain, prolapsed discs, spinal root impingement, hypomobility, degenerative joint disease, facet syndrome, compression fractures, joint pain, and discogennic pain. Fighting with a sciatica flare up. After doing some stretches this morning I decided to take a short hike trying to fight back and defeat the sciatica for the day. The weather was a perfect fall day.
This ride at Blair Drummond Safari Park was the one my late Grandfather went over at 93! The photo in the comment box below was taken immediately after. Sadly, they have made it less exciting now - not so steep and with a very gentle ending that would have been much softer than the old one for my Grandfather's sciatica. He died 3 years later but the memory of the ride gave him pleasure for years.
"The Butterfly upon the Sky,
That doesn't know its Name
And hasn't any tax to pay
And hasn't any Home
Is just as high as you and I,
And higher, I believe,
So soar away and never sigh
And that's the way to grieve -- "

Men-an-Tol, Land's End peninsula, Cornwall
Late Neolithic to Bronze Age, c.2500-c.1000BC
Cornish: maen = stone; tol = hole
Crawling on all fours around the stone nine times from east to west, and, if thin enough, through the aperture was thought to be a sovereign remedy for rheumatism, sciatica etc.
The sexual symbolism of the holed stone can hardly be doubted, particularly when considered in the light of associated healing and fertility legends. In common with other megalithic monuments the Men-an-Tol stone can be interpreted as an entrance to the Earth Goddess.
The Men-an-Tol has magical rather than astronomical use.

Danskos! :) TNNA is next week and that means a *lot* of walking in a hard-floored convention center. It normally takes me a few days to a week for my feet to recover after the show (seriously - I walk 2 or more miles every day, but on trails, not concrete, which I think makes a big difference - and wearing sneakers or hiking shoes, not flats, which I usually wear at TNNA), and with my sciatica back/hip pain in full effect for 2010, I was getting worried about how I was even going to make it through the day walking around the floor.
Soooo... in preparation (and hell, who am I kidding, for kicks) I have spent more on shoes in the past three days than I have in the last three years - maybe longer. (Erm. These are not the only shoes I've bought in the past three days. I may have had a Born situation at Zappos. But seriously, according to Twitter I'm like so way behind on shoe buying.)
Thank you, Mom, for the Christmas money! I got myself some shoes that actually support my high-as-hell arches. Glory be!

Have you ever made a decision that just didn't work out? I'm in the middle of something right now that needs to change. Nothing serious, just personal.
What a lovely weekend! I had a chance to get out with the TtV rig. I even made a trip to Santa Clara's cool library. It opened in 2004, and I just haven't had an opportunity to check it out until yesterday. All I can say is WOW!
My sciatica has settled down quite a bit, although I'm still sore in the morning and at the end of the day. I'm off the meds as of Friday night and I'm feeling a little like I've got a hangover from a month and a half long booze binge. The whole experience was totally unpleasant and I'm working on trying to lose weight and strengthen my abdomen to avoid a recurrence. Surgery is just not an option. I've lost 25 pounds so far.
I hope your Moanday is quick and painless...

Following info from Wikipedia:-
'William John Cavendish Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck, 5th Duke of Portland (12 September 1800 – 6 December 1879), styled Lord William Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck before 1824 and Marquess of Titchfield between 1824 and 1854, was a British aristocratic eccentric who preferred to live in seclusion. He had an underground maze excavated under his estate at Welbeck Abbey near Clumber Park in North Nottinghamshire.
He was the second son of William Henry Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck, the 4th Duke of Portland, and his wife Henrietta. He was baptised at St George's Church, Hanover Square, on 30 September. One of nine children, he was known by his second Christian name, John, as all the male members of the family were named William. He was the brother of Charlotte Denison, future wife of John Evelyn Denison, 1st Viscount Ossington.
Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck was educated at home rather than at school. Known as Lord John Bentinck, he served in the army from 1818, entering as an Ensign in the Foot Guards and later transferred to the 7th Light Dragoon Guards in 1821, where he became a captain, then the 2nd Life Guards in 1823. He reportedly suffered from lethargy due to his "delicate health".
In 1824, he became the Marquess of Titchfield following the death of his elder brother William Henry Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck, and was elected Tory MP to succeed his brother in King's Lynn, a seat traditionally held by a member of his family. He remained an MP until 1826, when he surrendered his seat on grounds of ill-health to his uncle Lord William Bentinck.
From 1824 to 1834, he also held the rank of captain in the Royal West India Rangers, on half pay, a sinecure, since this regiment had been disbanded in 1819. After leaving the army, he spent some time in continental Europe, his health being occasionally poor, including short term memory loss and sciatica.
On 27 March 1854, he succeeded his father as 5th Duke of Portland. Although the title also gave him a seat in the House of Lords, it took him three years to take his seat, not taking the oaths until 5 June 1857. He showed little interest in taking an active role in politics, although he supported the Whigs and Robert Peel. From 1859 until his death he was also Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire.
Welbeck Abbey
The Duke's major building operations and developments at his estate of Welbeck Abbey in which he took an active involvement appealed strongly to the popular imagination. They cost an enormous sum of money and employed thousands of men from the local area, both skilled and unskilled. While there were occasional labour disputes over wages and hours, the Duke was on very good terms with his many employees and earned the nickname "the workman's friend".
Grounds
The Abbey's kitchen gardens covered an area of 22 acres (8.9 ha), surrounded by high walls with recesses in which braziers could be placed to assist the ripening of fruit. One of the walls, a peach wall, measured over 1,000 ft (300 m) in length.
An immense riding house was constructed, 396 ft (121 m) long, 108 ft (33 m) wide, and 50 ft (15 m) high. It was lit by 4,000 gas jets. Like many other contemporary British aristocrats, the Duke was fond of horses — his stables held 100 horses but he never rode them in his riding house.
When roller skating became popular, the Duke had a rink installed near the lake for the benefit of his staff, whom he encouraged to use it.'
The shot was horrible. It was painful. It was like the longest, deepest, body cramping bee sting you've ever had. And then there was the part that felt like rubbing alcohol was being poured into my body. And it lasted three whole minutes, not one. And my blood pressure dropped to 69/50, so I had to stay there awhile.
Now I feel awful. In addition to the back pain, I have a sore place on my back that feels like the bee left his stinger. If it's going to work, it will take three to eight days. And I have to go back for a second shot regardless. It's a two-shot system. In two weeks.
Meanwhile, he wants me to go on Cymbalta so that I can stop being so frustrated. He said it will cover the rest of the pain, too.
But he also said there's a good possibility that this isn't what's causing my low-back pain. He thinks it's something to do with the facet joints--maybe arthritis, maybe injury. The shot is only supposed to work on the sciatica, which isn't nearly as painful as the back. But sometimes it gets the back too. Refreshing to hear.
My sister is now on my friend Lucy's Lyme bandwagon. They both insist I have it. I ordered the significant test, and it came last week. I've been too chicken (and in too much pain) to get tested. It will be among the rare times that I pray for a negative.

Edible Parts: Leaves, Shoots,
Edible Uses: Coloring, Curdling agent, Drink, Oil, Potherb, Soup,
Young leaves - cooked as a potherb and added to soups etc.. They can also be dried for winter use. Nettles are a very valuable addition to the diet, they are a very nutritious food that is easily digested and is high in minerals (especially iron) and vitamins (especially A and C). Only use young leaves (see the notes above on toxicity) and wear stout gloves when harvesting them to prevent being stung. Cooking the leaves, or thoroughly drying them, neutralizes the sting, rendering the leaf safe to eat. The young shoots, harvested in the spring when 15 - 20cm long complete with the underground stem are very nice. Old leaves can be laxative. The plants are harvested commercially for extraction of the chlorophyll, which is used as a green coloring agent (E140) in foods and medicines. A tea is made from the dried leaves, it is warming on a winters day. A bland flavor, it can be added as a tonic to China tea. The juice of the leaves, or a decoction of the herb, can be used as a rennet substitute in curdling plant milks. Nettle beer is brewed from the young shoots.
CAUTION: The leaves of the plants have stinging hairs, causing irritation to the skin. This action is neutralized by heat or by thorough drying, so the cooked leaves are perfectly safe and nutritious. However, only young leaves should be used because older leaves develop gritty particles called cystoliths which act as an irritant to the kidneys. Possible interference with allopathic drugs for diabetes mellitus, hypertension. Central nervous system depression drugs (e.g. morphine, alcohol) may also interact with nettle. Avoid during pregnancy.
MEDICINAL USES: Antiasthmatic, Antidandruff, Antirheumatic, Antiseborrheic, Astringent, Diuretic, Galactogogue, Hemostatic, Hypoglycemic, Stings, Tonic,
Nettles have a long history of use in the home as a herbal remedy and nutritious addition to the diet. A tea made from the leaves has traditionally been used as a cleansing tonic and blood purifier so the plant is often used in the treatment of hay fever, arthritis, anemia etc.. The whole plant is Antiasthmatic, antidandruff, astringent, depurative, diuretic, galactogogue, hemostatic, hypoglycemic and a stimulating tonic. An infusion of the plant is very valuable in stemming internal bleeding, it is also used to treat anemia, excessive menstruation, hemorrhoids, arthritis, rheumatism and skin complaints, especially eczema. Externally, the plant is used to treat skin complaints, arthritic pain, gout, sciatica, neuralgia, hemorrhoids, hair problems etc.. The fresh leaves of nettles have been rubbed or beaten onto the skin in the treatment of rheumatism etc.. This practice, called urtification, causes intense irritation to the skin as it is stung by the nettles. It is believed that this treatment works in two ways. Firstly, it acts as a counter-irritant, bringing more blood to the area to help remove the toxins that cause rheumatism. Secondly, the formic acid from the nettles is believed to have a beneficial effect upon the rheumatic joints. For medicinal purposes, the plant is best harvested in May or June as it is coming into flower and dried for later use. This species merits further study for possible uses against kidney and urinary system ailments. The juice of the nettle can be used as an antidote to stings from the leaves and an infusion of the fresh leaves is healing and soothing as a lotion for burns. The root has been shown to have a beneficial effect upon enlarged prostate glands. A homeopathic remedy is made from the leaves. It is used in the treatment of rheumatic gout, nettle rash and chickenpox, externally is applied to bruises. The German Commission E Monographs, a therapeutic guide to herbal medicine, approve Urtica dioica, Stinging Nettle for rheumatic ailments (internal use of leaf), irrigation therapy, for inflammatory disease of the lower urinary tract and prevention of kidney 'gravel' formation, urination difficulty from benign prostatic hyperplasia (root).
OTHER USES: Biomass, Compost, Dye, Green, Yellow, Fiber, Hair, Liquid feed, Oil, Repellent, Waterproofing
A strong flax-like fiber is obtained from the stems. Used for making string and cloth, it also makes a good quality paper. It is harvested as the plant begins to die down in early autumn and is retted before the fibers are extracted. The fiber is produced in less abundance than from flax (Linun usitatissimum) and is also more difficult to extract. The plant matter left over after the fibers have been extracted are a good source of biomass and have been used in the manufacture of sugar, starch, protein and ethyl alcohol. An oil obtained from the seeds is used as an illuminant. An essential ingredient of 'QR' herbal compost activator. This is a dried and powdered mixture of several herbs that can be added to a compost heap in order to speed up bacterial activity and thus shorten the time needed to make the compost. The leaves are also an excellent addition to the compost heap and they can be soaked for 7 - 21 days in water to make a very nutritious liquid feed for plants. This liquid feed is both insect repellent and a good foliage feed. The growing plant increases the essential oil content of other nearby plants, thus making them more resistant to insect pests. Although many different species of insects feed on nettles, flies are repelled by the plant so a bunch of freshly cut stems has been used as a repellent in food cupboards. The juice of the plant, or a decoction formed by boiling the herb in a strong solution of salt, will curdle milks and thus acts as a rennet substitute. This same juice, if rubbed into small seams of leaky wooden tubs, will coagulate and make the tub watertight again. A hair wash is made from the infused leaves and this is used as a tonic and antidandruff treatment. A beautiful and permanent green dye is obtained from a decoction of the leaves and stems. A yellow dye is obtained from the root when boiled with alum.
www.AquaticsPhysicalTherapy.com - (941) 924-9525 At White Sands Physical Therapy & Aquatics we utilize our comfortable warm water pool for many orthopedic conditions. Upavistha Konasana is a good preparation for most of the seated forward bends and twists, as well as the wide-leg standing poses. Upavistha refers to seating or sitting state, Kona literally means angle. This asana is good for detoxifying Kidney. Its also therapeutically beneficial for Arthritis and Sciatica.
Asana Technique
The entire procedure begins by sitting in Dandasana.
# Upavistha KonasanaLean your torso back slightly on your hands and lift and open your legs to an angle of about 90 degrees (the legs should form an approximate right angle, with the pubis at the apex).
# Press your hands against the floor and slide your buttocks forward, widening the legs another 10 to 20 degrees. As with Dandasana, if you can`t sit comfortably on the floor, raise your buttocks on a folded blanket.
# Rotate your thighs outwardly, pinning the outer thighs against the floor, so that the knee caps point straight up toward the ceiling.
# Reach out through your heels and stretch your soles, pressing though the balls of the feet.
# With your thigh bones pressed heavily into the floor and your knee caps pointing up at the ceiling, walk your hands forward between your legs. Keep your arms long. As with all forward bends, the emphasis is on moving from the hip joints and maintaining the length of the front torso. As soon as you find yourself bending from the waist, stop, re-establish the length from the pubis to the navel, and continue forward if possible.
# Increase the forward bend on each exhalation until you feel a comfortable stretch in the backs of your legs.
# Stay in the pose 1 minute or longer. Then come up on an inhalation with a long front torso.
The target points of this asana for the body are Hamstrings, Calves, Hips, Thighs, Knees, Spine and Groins.
Suggestion: Beginners might not be able to bring the torso forward toward the floor. Take a bolster or a thickly rolled blanket and lay it on the floor in front of you, its long axis perpendicular to your pelvis. Exhale into the forward bend and lay your torso down on this support.
Benefits of Upavistha Konasana
# The posture stretches the insides and backs of the legs.
# The entire asana stimulates the abdominal organs.
# Strengthens the spine.
# Calms the brain.
# Releases groins.
Precautions
In case of Lower-back injury: Sit up high on a folded blanket and keep your torso relatively upright.

Urdhva Mukha Savasana is literally derived from a Sanskrit word Urdhva means upward, mukha means the face and svan translated as a dog. This yoga pose literally resembles like a dog stretching upwards hence it got this name. Urdhva Mukha Savasana is an easy back bending yoga pose that works great on the strengthening of arms, wrist and shoulder.
Urdhva Mukha Savasana is very similar to cobra pose with the only difference is that cobra pose the entire lower body touches the floor and make a deep backbend and in an upward facing dog, the entire lower body from hips and ankle does not touch the floor. This simple and easy backbend yet a powerful pose awaken the whole upper body.
