Europe, Netherlands, Rotterdam, Centre, Pompenburg, Luchtsingel, Shell tower (uncut)

The ol’ Luchtsingel is still there. It was closed for two years to prevent the wood rot of the outer shell from damaging the wooden support structure. But it still seriously needs some more maintenance.

The Luchtsingel and the adjacent Schieblock projects (created in 2015 by ZUS architects) are interesting strategies that counteract the detrimental effects that the combination of modernist urban planning—with its rigorous segregation of work, living, and commercial functions—and chronic high levels of office building vacancy have on the liveability and vitality of the city centre.

It offers a circuit of elevated walkways that pass through the Schieblock, cross major roads and a railroad to offer the pedestrians new ways to discover the city, help them to avoid the anonymous and sometimes unsafe existing urban ground level and realise a connection between emerging cultural hotspots in the Rotterdam Central and Noord areas. Design: Architectenbureau ZUS. Funding: the municipality of Rotterdam and crowdsourcing/crowdfunding. For 25 €, people could buy planks on which the buyer's name is printed.

In the BG is the brutalist former Shell building II tower (1979 P. Zandstra), De Hofpoort now, a business centre.

I had expected the Luchtsingel in Rotterdam to be one of the photographic highlights having seen quite a few photos whilst doing my research. As it was it was in quite a bad state and as a result I hardly took any photos with this detail shot probably being the only one worth uploading.

From ArchDaily : "The Luchtsingel is open. Decades after their separation, the 400-meter-long pedestrian bridge has reconnected three districts in the heart of Rotterdam. The Luchtsingel was initiated and designed by the Rotterdam-based architects ZUS and is the world's first piece of public infrastructure to be accomplished mostly through crowdfunding. Together with the new public spaces, including the Delftsehof, Dakakker, Pompenburg Park, and the Hofplein Station Roof Park, a 'three-dimensional cityscape' has arisen.

'Based on the idea of Permanent Temporality, the Luchtsingel introduces a new way of making city. This means using the city's evolutionary character and existing forms as a starting point. Therefore, we have developed new instruments for design, financing, and planning',says Elma van Boxel, partner at ZUS.

When, in 2011, it was announced that a planned office development in Rotterdam Central District had been cancelled, leaving many existing office spaces vacant as a result, ZUS decided to take matters into their own hands. They used a former office building, the Schieblock, to develop a city laboratory, which currently acts as an important incubator for young entrepreneurs. With its ground-floor store, bar, culinary workshop, information centre, and its rooftop field called the Dakakker, Europe’s first urban farming roof, it has become a prototype for sustainable development."

Shown here is almost the whole of the Luchtsingel, consult the notes (with photo links) for the specific locations. A new element is the access to the former Shellgebouw redeveloped into ‘Laatbloeien’ . Next to it is the Shell tower, currently the HQ of Unilever (transformation: Mecanoo) .

Luchtsingel is a 350 meter span pedestrian bridge, which will re-connect Rotterdam Central District with the Hofbogen. The area surrounding Hofplein used to be place full of livelihood, when now it’s dominated by cars and lack of public domain. Luchtsingel is the first step in bringing back urban qualities adding small-scale interventions to the urban fabric.

Luchtsingel is a fully crowd funded project: anyone can contribute. Through web- and digital applications citizens will be given full opportunity of private development: small-scale, non-bureaucratic, low-budget. More information.

The city can be seen as a playground. This becomes once again clear when one think about RiF010. It will be an urban wave pool where people can sup and ride surfboards on the generated waves. A city canal near Hang (and Steiger) is being transformed for it.

RiF010 took a long while before it became viable. The local residents didn’t take a kind view on it. They feared it would become a problem for the area's livability. And there were all kinds of organizational and technical difficulties. It was one of the 2014 City initiatives, like the: Luchtsingel (& Schieblock) here.

This is number 734 of Rotterdam architecture and number 40 of Fish-eyed.

In the middle of the Roundabout (on groundlevel) of the Luchtsingel is a popular trampoline. The Luchtsingel offers a circuit of elevated walkways that passes through the Schieblock, crosses a major road and a railroad to offer the pedestrian new ways to discover the city, help them to avoid the anonymous and sometime unsafe existing urban ground level. And it forms a connection between emerging cultural hotspots in the Rotterdam Central and Noord areas.

It is an interesting project that counteracts the detrimental effects that the combination of modernist urban planning (with its rigorous segregation of work, living and commercial functions) and chronic high levels of vacancy of office buildings and anonymous space (the location of the demolished Hofplein station) have on the liveability and vitality of the northern part of the centre of Rotterdam.

Pictured here are two people with their brollies at the place where the Luchtsingel (a wooden viaduct for pedestrians) enters the Schieblock building, It was built in the early 60s, stood empty and probably faced demolition A coalition of an architecture bureau (ZUS), a real estate developer, the owner of the building and the municipality of Rotterdam turned it in to a creative hotspot and a laboratory of urban redevelopment. A specialty is the “Dak Akker” an agricultural facility on the roof of the building with its ‘outlet’ the ‘Op het Dak’ restaurant.

With the usual suspects of the skyline of the centre of Rotterdam as backdrop the ‘Dakakker’ is shown here. It’s on top of the 6 story 'Schieblock' feautured in the previous post.

It’s the first large production roof farm in the Netherlands. Vegetables, fruits and herbs are grown and honeybees are kept here. It has its own ‘outlet’, the ‘Op het dak’ rooftop restaurant .

The Dakakker is also Europe's largest roof top farm. Its mission to experiment with the integration of a small scale green business in an (hyper)urban setting. It was designed by Binder Groenprojecten (2012) and ZUS (Zones Urbaines Sensibles – the local architecture/urbanism firm behind the Schieblock and the Luchtsingel) in collaboration with the Rotterdam Environmental Center. It’s an integral part of the ‘Luchtsingel ‘urban renewal light’ project:

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Central district, Delftsehof, Graffiti, Speto (slightly cut from all sides)

Shot from the roof of the Schieblock (the Dakakker, featured in the previous post ) into the Delftsehof.

It was created in 1958 (a modernist ‘wederopbouw’ project - a cluster of office buildings). Start of the abandonment of the offices in ‘90s. From 2005 onwards informally redeveloped by temporal structures (the Biergarten) and cultural and recreative use, such as the Hip Hop Huis . The giant graffiti art work near it was made by the Brazilian Speto realized during the R.U.A

( Reflexo on Urban Art ) - Lines, Colours and Forms of Brazilian Urban Art festival (July-August 2009). Brazilian graffiti artists were invited to paint huge walls in the streets of Rotterdam to show urban and contemporary Brazilian art next to institutionalized art of museums and galleries.

The backdrop (from L to R): the Nationale Nederlanden office building, Central Station (above it: the Groothandelsgebouw), and the former PTT post distribution centre.

Gentrification, often the next step of informal revitalization processes, doesn't seem to be in the books here. But in due course the chronic housing shortage in Rotterdam might well lead to the creation of upmarket apartments in the office buildings on dispaly here .

About Speto (Rodrigo Level) in his own words: “I came from a neighborhood (Santana in Sao Paulo) where the children would play freely on the streets- Riding their bicycles and skateboards , playing with kites ,lantern balloons
My grandfather was a Sambista (samba musician) , My uncle was a soccer player, my father used to sing and my mother was extremely catholic . All those elements were very important through my childhood and youth. I am a self-taught artist , I did not go to school nor to the University. Graffiti was something completely new back then and there was no school other than the Streets.”

The soundtrack: Mais que nada - Sergio Mendes & Black eyed peas.

The first part of the Luchtsingel passes thru the Schieblock and crosses the Schiekade and is shown here here and here .

Shown here is second part. It consists of a roundabout, two access stairs and a bridge that crosses the 4 tracks of the Rotterdam-Dordecht main railway line. Kids already discovered it. It's on the site of the demolished part of the Hofplein railway station. In BG on the right is the housing of the Heliport quarter, because of the roofs also known as ‘Klein Volendam’. It was the location of the terminal of the Rotterdam-Antwerp-Brussels helicopter service (1953-1965, operated by Sabena), hence its name.

A quite unique roof garden on top the 'Schieblock' building in the center of Rotterdam - shot during the Day of Architecture.

An exhausting day, I managed to visit 7 different building with a view from 50m up to 160m.

Schieblock / dakakker

Schieblock / dakakker: erg leuk! (zie foto dus) wekelijks toegankelijk trouwens.

Hofpoort: Hoog, lekker druk, lekker gek.

I found out that "All we've got is uz" is the name of a song by Onyx (1995) a rapgroup and also from a rapduo named Capone-N-Noreaga (2000).

This mural was made by Frankie Sticks to honor the 15th anniversary of the Hiphophouse, on the left of the parkinglot. With the words: It was all a dream.. on it

Both rapgroups are from New York and to give it a NY-touch Frankie used this lettertype which looks a little like the logo of the New York Yankees.

It's like a tribute to the city of New York as the birthplace of HipHop.

The mural above these words is made by the Brazilian street artist Speto.

This was inspired by the painting of Picasso.. called Guernica.

Behind that all you see a tall silver building and the smaller black building and together this is the Delftse Poort.

The Delftse Poort has a hight of 151,35 m and 41 stories high.. the lower building is 93 m.

The architect is the Frisian architect Abe Bonnema.

The smaller building on the right is called Central Post which is build from 1955-1959 and on that roof I did take a look closer at the Delftse Poort and over another part of the city.

As you can see, on top of the Central Post you see little heads.. of the people standing and watching there.

And all these interesting things I saw from a 7 story high building, Schieblock, in our beautiful town, Rotterdam.

The best there is.

Born and raised there, I should know.

😀

This yellow board road is part of a 390 meters long wooden footbridge called “Luchtsingel” (which translates to something like “air canal”) that’s being built in a kind of derelict area in Rotterdam. This part was finished in 2012, the rest should be completed later this year. In the background you’ll see an old office building (Schieblock) that is converted into a roof farm/garden (they grow vegetables, fruits and herbs on the roof) called DakAkker.
