Myriad of other things.
Stepping out of the woods on the cliff edge you get stunned by this art of Nature. And, as we people are suggestive, your immagination draws pre-Christian druids or shamans who supposedly ran rituals on this boulder. Legends have it, that they even scarified people.
I cant believe how much the grass is growing still this year in the warm weather and wet ground.
This area was scarified and yellow rattle sowed at end of August. Hopefully it will germinate well and help this area on its journey to a perennial meadow,
A lovely morning with really nice light.
The garden's not looking as good as it used to these days and the drought has not helped. For a start the lawn needs cutting, and feeding but there's been no rain to wash it in. It also badly needs scarifying as it's full of thatch and moss.
Nothing has grown very much this year but the drought has at least helped me keep up with the rampant bindweed that has taken over the garden in recent years, at least in the borders, but I cause so much damage to the plants it climbs up it is a very depressing and endless job. Digging anywhere to put new plants in is like digging a pan of spaghetti, the soil is almost all bindweed roots.
That's why the clematis that is supposed to be climbing that metal tripod in the foreground is so spindly as I accidentally broke its main shoots trying to unravel the bindweed. In the hedges around the garden its at least 12 feet high and growing about 18 inches a week! I noticed a few weeks ago I was missing at least one clematis and a couple of honeysuckles and I think the bindweed suffocated them in the last two years.
Today we've had our first half day of proper rain in months, and instantly it's like a 50's B movie of terrorising slugs and snails. They are everywhere! A walk across the patio is a crunch in every direction and they are climbing the walls and windows! My poor hostas. I was out in the rain this morning picking snails off them as they munched away.
Moan, moan, moan. Sorry about that!

Braunton's milkvetch
I have decided to post a couple of species that can be found in the Santa Monica Mountains that are endangered. This particular flower seems to be found in a very few locations in this area; thus it is critically endangered. It also needs fire to really succeed. The area where these flowers are found has probably not been burned in quite some time. For further information on fire ecology for this plant, this is from Wikipedia:
"This plant, like many chaparral species, is fire-adapted and requires wildfire or other disturbance to propagate. The beanlike seeds require scarification to break down their tough seed coats before they can germinate. The seeds persist for years in the soil until fire allows them to sprout, with populations of the plant springing up in an area that has been recently swept by wildfire.[2]
It is a pioneer species, one of the first to grow in a disturbed area and one that is soon crowded out by plant species that appear later in ecological succession. Wildfire suppression in the hills and mountains surrounding Los Angeles prevent the plant from reproducing."

I found an unedited fall capture. I decided that it was a good shot to signal the end of the Snowy McIntosh series. This is a powerful, but earlier September autumn sunset shot across the Golden Ponds Park. The middle pond reflects Meeker and Longs and toward the south end of Rocky Mountain National Park. Meeker and Longs stand in front of the actual continental divide. They always provide orientation for valley residents. Indian Peaks Wilderness Area fills out the divide south of Rocky. Both sound good after this February global warming Koch blowout. I ought to keep a close eye on a possible great sky day for another evening visit.
The daily turbulence is clearing for another grand evening in the valley. The sunset sets the remaining light on the tree and grass off nicely. I am out here on the bank of the middle pond at Golden Ponds, the Longmont, Boulder County greenbelt and rec area and fortunately, the turn is only a half-dozen blocks down Hover St. I wanted to look for possible locations because I figured the sky could become showy at sun down. I like the way the sunlight glow plays upon the leaves so that they snap their way into awareness. I scarified some detail from the trees across the pond as the glow illuminates the foliage. Autumn is finally in control after the summer of the Koch foossil foolers. I love shooting bold scenes with this camera and lens. These shots were slow enough to require the podzilla.
This autumn evening was welcome relief from the oppressive summer although this winter we're dry enough to worry about fires that continue to spark.

Calliandra californica
Species of legume
Calliandra californica, the Baja fairy duster, is an evergreen, woody shrub, native to Baja California, Mexico. In Spanish, the plant is also known vernacularly as tabardillo, zapotillo[2] or chuparosa.[3] The flowers, which appear in early summer, have clusters of red stamens. The shrub is usually 0.6–1.8 metres (2 ft 0 in – 5 ft 11 in) in height and has bipinnate leaves. The leaves have been described as "fern-like."[4] Leaves close at night time.[5]
Quick facts Scientific classification, Binomial name ...
Calliandra californica is cold tolerant to temperatures of 22 °F (−6 °C),[5] though its roots will tolerate temperatures as low as 5 °F (−15 °C).[6] It grows best in full sun.[5] C. californica is very drought tolerant, needing only 10 inches (250 mm) of water every year.[6] However, additional watering will encourage C. californica to bloom through summer and again in the fall.[6]
Propagation of C. californica is done through "acid scarification" or vegetative cutting.[5] Seed pods from this plant look like "snow peas" and when ripe, they explode.[4] The pods are flat and about 2 inches (51 mm) long.[6] After ejecting seeds, the curled open pods remain attached to the plant for some time.[7]
Calliandra californica attracts both bees and hummingbirds.[5]
Along with many other legumes and leadworts (Plumbago),[8] it is a host plant for the Marine Blue caterpillar (Leptotes marina).[9]
In landscaping, it is suggested that C. californica is used in borders or foreground plantings, as an island accent or even in containers.[6]

Ethiopia.
Mago National Park.
The Mursi or Mursu people are the most popular in Ethiopia's Omo Valley. They are well known for their unique lip plates. They are settled around the Omo River and in the Mago National Park. Due to the climate, they move twice a year between the winter and summer months. They herd cattle and grow crops along the banks of the Omo River.
The Mursi women paint their bodies and face in white. They also are the ones who wear the lip plates. Women of the Mursi tribe may have their lips cut at the age of 15 or 16. A small clay plate is then inserted into the lip. Through the years, larger plates are inserted into the lip causing it to stretch. The larger the clay plate, the more the woman is worth before she gets married. It is said that the clay plates were originally used to prevent capture by slave traders. Although very unique and part of their tradition, the Mursi women only wear the plates for a short time because they are so heavy and uncomfortable.
Men of the Mursi also use white paint for their bodies and faces. Just like any other ethnic tribe in the lower valley, the men must pass a test before they can get married. A Mursi man is given a stick called a Donga and must face one opponent. The men then battle it out, beating Man of the Mursi Tribe with body scarseach other with the sticks.
The first fighter to submit loses and the winner is taken by a group of women to determine who he will marry. Men of the tribe also pratice scarification. Like other tribes, this is the marking of an enemy killed by him.
Although they are known to be aggresive and combative, the Mursi are more then happy to allow you to take pictures of them. However, they keep count of every picture taken and will charge you for each one.

The Karamojong are nomadic agro-pastoralists known for their love of cattle and their resistance to the trappings of modern civilisation. They consist out of numerous tribes and clans that once migrated from modern days Ethiopia including the Maasai, Turkana and Nyangatom living on the Omo Valley of Ethiopia. Due to the decades of isolation and their strong believes, the Karamojong people have been able to maintain their ancestral cultural heritage with cultural customs dating back to thousands of years.
The Karamojong have distinctive beauty ideals as scarification on the body and faces, usage of colourful beads, the iconic blankets and their traditional dances shows. They show great similarities to the renown Maasai in Kenya.
Now this might not look very impressive but in an attempt to create a small wildflower meadow at the top of our garden I scarified the ground & scattered a large amount of Yellow-rattle seed last Autumn. Just 4 plants grew but 4 is better than none. They have now gone to seed so fingers crossed for many more next year. The wooden box at the top right is a beehive & the other yellow flowers are Buttercups.
Yellow-rattle is a semi-parasitic plant which means that by using haustoria (root-like organs) it can absorb water & minerals from neighbouring plants, chiefly grasses. You really need it to get this plant established to have any hope of other wild flowers being successful otherwise the grasses just take over.
The seeds are formed inside inflated, dry capsules which, when ripe, rattle & eventually release the seeds to the wind. If you view Large you can see the seed capsules developing.

Allada.
January, 9th marks the start of the annual voodoo festival in Benin.
ALLADA FESTIVAL VIDEO ON YOU TUBE
His highness Kpodegbe Toyi Djgla invites you to the annual Voodoo Festival Allada, held on the 9th of January at Allada royal palace, Benin.
Voodoo/Vodoun is a name attributed to an West African ancestral religious system of worship and ritual practices, where specific deities are born and honored, along with the veneration of ancient and recent ancestors who earlier served the same tutelary deities.
Voodoo religion was established in the 13th century in Benin republic by Adjahounto, the founder of Allada, ancestor of Dahomey kingdom and the forefather of Toussaint Louverture (father of Haiti.)
Since 1994, Voodoo has officially decreed as an official religion, Voodoo festival continues to be the country’s most colorful and vibrant annual celebration.
Similar to any other religion, Benin’s voodoo practitioners remain strong and devoted to their religion, as Benin’s leading religion is animism.
The Voodoo Festival is held on the 9th of January at Allada in remembrance ‘Adjahounto’ the initiator of voodoo and 10th of January as a national festival at Ouidah (at the site of Dagbokonou and across the country).
Happy boy of the Mursi tribe in the village Bidiro, Lower Omo Valley, Ethiopia. The people of the Mursi tribe are seminomads. From July to September most of the families stay together, it is the time just after the raining season and the big harvest. The people are happy, there is a dance in the village almost every evening. It is also the time for the big ceremonies like weddings and Donga fights.
Usually only the young men are doing the face painting, but sometimes also the kids start to paint themselves, like the boy on the picture. For the young men it is important to be attractive to the girls, especially when they join a dance, but for the kids it's just fun.
